Antecedentes
En documentos ancestrales ya se registraba la
existencia de criaturas motiles de gran tamaño
semejantes a las lombrices de tierra que se
encontraban en las heces de las personas y
sólo ocasionalmente escapaban a través de los
orificios corporales.
Los romanos los llamaron “lumbricos teres”
por su parecido con la lombriz de tierra y
porque se creía que los niños adquirían el
parásito de la tierra.
1683. El medico británico Edward Tyson describió la morfología del
parasito.
1879. El científico italiano Giovanni Batista Grassi ingirió cerca de 100
huevos embrionados, con el resultado de que 22 días después encontró en
sus heces al parásito adulto.
1915. Stewart experimentó con cerdos y ratas, con lo que logró demostrar
que el parásito es capaz de pasar al pulmón.
1922. Shimesu Koino se infectó a sí mismo ingiriendo 2 000 huevos
embrionados e infectó a su hermano menor con una cantidad también
considerable del parásito; 11 días después encontró larvas en su esputo,
además de que presentó dificultad para respirar, fiebre y cefalea.

Enfermedad
La ascariasis es una geohelmintiosis ya que el agente causal
requiere de la tierra para que se forme la fase infectiva para
el humano. Es una infección producida por el nematodo Ascaris
Lumbricoides.
Esta parasitosis tiene enorme
importancia epidemiológica, pues las
zonas donde se presenta con mayor
incidencia son las de gran pobreza.
