Conversation strategies
Checking your understanding
In conversation, you can ask questions in the form of statements to check your understanding:
A I just don't like big groups of people.
B So you're not going to go? (Instead of: So aren't you going to go?)
People often add huh or right at the end of statement questions:
So parties aren't your thing, huh?
You're going this time, right?
So
You can use so in many ways, including:
•
To start a topic, often with a question
So, there's another work party on Friday, right?
•
To check your understanding
So parties aren't your thing, huh?
•
To pause at the end of a sentence or let the other person draw a conclusion
I'd rather talk one on one, so . . .
•
To close a topic or end a story
So yeah, I'll just say I have other plans.
