Ask Globe Trotter
Dear Globe Trotter,
My roommate is from Vietnam and she has invited me to her parents’ home for a typical
Vietnamese dinner. I’m excited but nervous about not knowing the correct etiquette. Can you
give me some tips?
Sincerely,
Hungry to Learn

Dear Hungry to Learn,
It’s great that you want to be culturally literate! Here are some things to keep in mind for
dinner:

•

•
•
It’s polite to take a small gift to your hosts, such as sweets, tea, or coffee. Flowers are an
acceptable gift. But don’t take white ones – white is the colour of death.
It’s customary to take off your shoes before entering someone’s home.
People traditionally bow when they are introduced, but some people also shake hands.
It’s best to wait and see what the other person does.
If you have trouble with chopsticks, mention your lack of skill and ask for a fork.
Use two hands to pass a plate to someone or to accept one.
If you are offered a second or third portion of food, you must accept it (if you don’t, it
might be considered offensive).
Lastly, if you don’t know what to do, it’s OK to ask.
Sincerely,
Globe Trotter
