Syllable Review
To understand the rules for comparative adjectives,
you need to know how many syllables are in an
adjective.
A syllable is how many vowel sounds there are in a word.
Shy, Tall, Short = 1 Syllable
Happy, Ugly, Boring = 2 Syllables
Amazing, Beautiful, Terrible = 3 Syllables
Incredible, American = 4 Syllables

We use Comparative Adjectives to compare nouns.
Be Verb + Comparative Adjective + Than
Greg is taller than Preston and Scott.
Preston is shorter than Greg.
Preston is taller than Scott.
Scott is shorter than Preston and Greg.
Tall and Short are one syllable adjectives.

What is the rule for one syllable adjectives?

If the adjective is one syllable, add –er to the end of the adjective + than
If the adjective ends in –e, only add –r
If the adjective ends in consonant + vowel + consonant…

One more rule… no ‘than’?
If we already know the object or if the subject and object are the same, don’t write ‘than’!
Bill is very tall. Jim is taller.
We don’t need to write “than Bill” because Bill was mentioned earlier.
The weather is getting hotter.
The subject and the object are the same, the weather is changing because of time.
If you don’t see an object, you don’t need to write ‘than’!
