Civilian deaths over the past ten years have somewhere between 120,000 and 900,000 killed by coalition forces, Iraqi army and police, Iraqi insurgents, suicide bombers and Al-Qaeda. There have been more than 1700 suicide bomb attacks, and 700 Al-Qaeda fighters have been killed since 2003, according to the Iraqi defence ministry. Shocking figures, but history has a hard heart, and may reach an unsentimental conclusion about the agony that Iraq has endured over the past ten years. The Chinese Mogul Source CBS No one symbolises China's rapid 30 year rise from the backwaters of communism to the second largest economy in the world better than real estate developer Jang Chin. What's interesting about her is that while we think of China as being uncreative, repressive, and as far as you can get from the American Dream, she breaks every one of those stereotypes. She's a mogul who got her start not in China, but on Wall Street. But she missed the Great Wall, so she went back home and made it big. The mogul Jang Chin is the 5th richest self-made billionaire woman in the world. With her partner husband she has built more of Beijing than almost any emperor in China's history. Scientists and Administration Source: ABC Robyn Williams: And all that talk about cost makes you think about what scientists do in America. Would you believe that 42% of their time is spent on admin, paperwork, filling in forms? And it was here that the European Commission announced an extra $80 billion for research. Even during cutbacks, the Europeans are backing R&D. Here are Robert JanSmits and Professor Anne Glover. Robyn Williams: Europe has a reputation for bureaucracy. Now I think you know, Anne, that the Americans spend 42% of their time, the scientists, on administration. You won't do that, will you? Anne Glover: Absolutely not. There always has to be some administration, we all accept that, but I think one of the imaginative and really important parts of the Horizon 2020 proposal is simplification. Suicide in the US Military Source: ABC One of the leading causes of death for American military forces right now is suicide. In 2012, 349 active members of the armed forces took their own lives. That's more than the number that died in combat. When you add the suicides among veterans, the numbers are staggering. The VA (The Veteran's Association) estimates as many as 22 veterans a day die by their own hands. 22 each day. This is the story of one. Clay Hunt from Houston, Texas, a marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. After four year of a downward spiral he took his own life in 2011. You see him in videos during some of his best times, and hear him talk about some of his worst. Hunt loved being a marine and serving his country, and though he had been out of the core for two years when he died, Clay Hunt was a casualty of war. Former Italian Prime Minister Sentenced to Jail Source: BBC Valerie Sanderson: The former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had been found guilty in a court case against him and sentenced to a year in prison. His crime was to have leaked the transcript of a police wiretap to a newspaper owned by a member of his family, in order to discredit a political rival. But, will the colourful and controversial Mr. Berlusconi actually end up in jail? Jackie Lenoud asked our Rome correspondent Alan Johnstone... Alan Johnstone: I have to say that it's almost certain that Mr. Berlusconi will never serve any kind of jail sentence in connection with this verdict. His lawyers said to us just yesterday that if the verdict went against them, they would certainly appeal. He always, always appeals whenever he looses a court case like this. Answers 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
