ZEECO PILOT TESTING
®
Pilot Testing Per API 537
Flare systems operate as a critical safety device within facilities to protect nearby personnel and equipment.
A stable, reliable, and robust pilot is the most critical component in a flare system because the pilot initiates and
ensures combustion. Zeeco is proud to offer pilots tested and proven to meet and exceed American Petroleum
Institute (API) 537 standards.
Given the criticality of flare pilots, industry
leaders and international experts came together to
set API criteria for evaluating acceptable flare pilot
performance. Using pilots that are tested and proven
to meet the criteria assures equipment operators and
the public that a flare pilot will perform reliably. API is
responsible for determining and updating nearly 700
globally accepted industry standards designed to set
the expectations for real world performance.
Zeeco has installed an API-recommended
test stand to test and prove the suitability of our
pilot designs, and to develop and test future pilot
technologies. The ZEECO® HSLF-Z pilot has been
tested and proven to far exceed the minimum
standards of API 537.
While API 537 requires that a pilot stays lit when
subjected to 140 km/h (85 mph) wind speeds and
5 cm/h (2 in/h) of rainfall, the HSLF-Z pilot has been
proven to stay lit under punishing hurricane force
274 km/h (170 mph) winds in the face of 131 cm/h
(51 in/h) of rainfall. To ensure your flare equipment
meets safety expectations and API 537 requirements,
choose a ZEECO flare pilot.

Pilot Testing Per API 537
(LEFT) API 537 testing requires that testing
be performed for 3 different configurations,
to test performance when the wind is
moving across the pilot flame in an upwind,
downwind, or crosswind condition.

sustained ignition in all three positions under
wind conditions of 274 km/h (170 mph) at
