Safety
Basic Rules

Make sure you follow the procedure! Do not anything that is not written in the
procedure or verbally instructed by one of your officers or Mr. Gibbs.

If you have ANY questions, no matter how ‘stupid’ they might seem, ask an
officer who will be walking around to assist groups.

NEVER, EVER, EVER, work alone!

Absolutely never drink or eat in the lab. This includes chewing gum!
Pre-Lab

There’s no long lab write up for this club…yay!

But, you must read the procedures before you enter the lab. This is for
preparation and safety!
Safety Equipment!

First Aid Kit

Eye wash station

Safety Shower

Fire Extinguisher and Fire Blanket

Fire Alarm
Disposal

Your officers or Mr. Gibbs will tell you how to dispose of the materials; if we
forget to tell you, ask before you pour it down the sink.
During the Experiment

Your station needs to be monitored at all times; no walking away from the
experiment, distracting other groups, or interfering with others’ experiments.
Clothing!

You need to wear long pants and long sleeves.

Hair needs to be pulled up, and no dangly jewelry should be worn.

Closed toed shoes are absolutely required!

Contact lenses should not be worn.

We will provide goggles and gloves; these need to be worn whenever in the
lab.
Accidents

If you break something, don’t stress! Just tell one of the officers or Mr. Gibbs
immediately so we can help you clean up and remain safe.

If you spill something, let us know right away!

If you get something in your eye or on your skin, go wash it out in the
eyewash station for 20 minutes or the shower. Your lab partner needs to tell
us immediately.
Chemicals

ALL chemicals used should be considered dangerous. Be careful!

If you pour too much of a chemical out of a storage bottle, do not put excess
back in the bottle– that might contaminate the supply.
Glassware

Before beginning the lab, inspect your glassware for chips and cracks. If you
find some, get new glassware. Also, make sure that it is clean.

If glass breaks, tell one of your officers or Mr. Gibbs right away. Do not touch
it with your bare hands.

Hot glass and cold glass look the same! If you do not know that it is cold, do
not touch it.

Do not put hot glass in cold water– it will shatter!
If in doubt….

ASK FOR HELP
Fire!

Never ever reach over an open flame and make sure your hair, clothes, etc.
stay far away from the fire. Things burn!

Never leave fire unattended.

Do not point the open end of a test tube, especially if it is heating, at
yourself OR a lab partner!
