Maravillas Del Mundo Moderno
No creo que las maravillas de hoy en día sean similares a las del Mundo Antiguo. Eran todo edificios y
estatuas. En los dos últimos siglos hemos visto avances técnicos y científicos sin precedentes. Estas son
seguramente nuestras modernas maravillas. Aquí está mi lista.
1 Ordenadores
Ya han revolucionado la forma en que vivimos y trabajamos. Pero son días prematuros para los ordenadores.
No sabemos cuánto todavía están cambiando el mundo. Más ordenadores asombrosos están todavía por llegar.
2 Viaje Espacial
Solo unos pocos años antes de que los hombres caminaran por la luna, científicos consagrados declararon que
eso era imposible. Pero en 1969 Neil Armstrong caminó fuera de su cápsula espacial e hizo su famosa
afirmación: Es un pequeño paso para un hombre, un gran paso para la humanidad.
3 Ciencia Medica
Seguramente nada ha hecho más por la comodidad y la felicidad que los avances médicos descubiertos.
¿Cuantos millones de personas se habrán beneficiado de la humilde aspirina? ¿Cuántas vidas habrá salvado la
penicilina? La media de esperanza de vida en Europa ha aumentado drásticamente en estos últimos cien años,
desde sobre 50 años en 1906 a sobre 75 años hoy.
4 Vacaciones
Sí − ¡vacaciones! De hecho siempre ha habido vacaciones − en la Antigua Roma había más de 150 por año −
pero vacación entendida como un día donde no se trabajó. Ahora los turistas viajan a todas las partes del
mundo. Quizá no te gusten demasiado los turistas en tu país, pero debes aceptar que un fenómeno el cual ve
como la población de Grecia se triplica en verano, y que envía funcionarios y dependientas a España, Turkía o
el Caribe es una maravilla del mundo.
5 Los Juegos Olímpicos
Es cierto que los Juegos Olímpicos ahora están comercializados y que hay avaricia y consumo de drogas. Sin
embrago, es una competición en la cual todos los países del mundo toma parte. Cada cuatro años, por un breve
momento, vemos a estos países reunirse en paz y amistad. Esperémoslo de nuevo para el futuro de la
humanidad.
6 La agricultura
En 1724, Jonathan Swift escribió, Quienquiera que haga crecer dos palas de hierba o dos espigas de trigo
donde antes solo creció uno sirve mejor a la humanidad que la clase política entera. En Europa nuestros
granjeros han hecho esto. En 1709, pueblos enteros murieron de hambre en Francia. Ahora, en Europa no
podemos comer toda la comida que producimos. Solo si los políticos pudieran encontrar una forma para
compartirlo con aquellas partes del mundo donde hay todavía hambre.
7 Nosotros estamos todavía aquí

La última maravilla del mundo moderno es simplemente que estamos aquí. Tenemos bombas que pueden
destruir el mundo pero no las hemos usado. Está es seguramente la mejor maravilla de todas.
What is good and bad about each wonder?
1 Computers
I would like to say computers are very important in our lives. In this moment I'm writing these sentences in a
personal computer. But on the other side, they are replacing the manpower in the factories. Actually is
difficult to find a job perhaps computers....
2 Space Travel
I understand that the Space travel is a modern wonder, but for what? I don't think it's necessary to spent a lot
of money in that kind of wonder.
3 Medical Science
From my point of view it's very important for the human race knowing all about us, but where are the limits?
Nowadays the genetic is showing us a lot of things, like Dolly's sheep, etc. Must we change the normal life?
4 Holidays
I love holidays, every day we going to work, after that, one holiday month is waiting us. However, we are
destroying the Earth environment, to discover another places to visit.
5 The Olympic Games
A lot of interests moves the Olympic spirit. The Governments have to pay a lot of money to the players, if not
they won't go. At least you can watch on TV a lot of sports.
6 Agriculture
In my opinion the last technical achievement has contributed to increase the quantity and quality of the
products. Talking about agriculture we live in a rich place but we have to look after it. The majority of people
goes to the cities to work.
7 We are still here
Oh, yes! And we must change the world. We see the kids in the streets with not enough to eat, who are we to
be blind?. It is better to be safe than sorry, and this is the perfect moment to say LET'S GO!
What is in your opinion the main wonder of the modern world? And why?
From my point of view, the most important wonder is WALL STREET, and the world economy.
The American Stock Exchange is on Wall Street in New York, one of the greatest financial centres of the
world.
But Wall Street does not only deal with big investors. 41% of investors have quite small sums of money
(about $5,000) invested in the Stock Exchange.

Wall Street made history seventy years ago, on 28 the October 1929 when prices suddenly fell. From then
until July 1932, prices went on going down week after week and month after month. On September 29th 1929
a share in General Motors cost $73. On 8th July went bankrupt, and a large number of people lost all their
investments.
The Wall Street share index is called the Dow Jones Index. If you want to know what the Dow Jones Index at
this moment, you can call this New York number and listen to the recording: New York 976 4141.
In my opinion it's incredible to see how people moves enormous quantities of money in a meeting point.
