Viejas
y nuevas historias forman la memoria
de los Paradores. Sus estancias han
sido escenario de romances de película y entre sus paredes han buscado refugio músicos, políticos, escritores...
Y es que, ya desde su creación, en el año 1928, estos
establecimientos gozaron de un gran atractivo para
numerosos personajes públicos. Uno de los primeros
fue Pedro Muñoz Seca. A mediados de los años treinta,
el autor de ‘La venganza de Don Mendo’ acostumbraba
a pasar seis meses al año en el Parador de Manzanares. Fruto de aquellas estancias y de su prolífica imaginación fue la novela ‘El refugio’ publicada en el año
1935 y cuya trama transcurre en dicho establecimiento.

The
memories of the Paradores comprise stories
old and new. Their rooms have set the scene
for celluloid romances and their walls have given refuge
to musicians, politicians, writers... Ever since their creation, back in 1928, these establishments have been
extremely attractive for many public figures. One of the
first was one of Spain’s leading playwrights Pedro Muñoz
Seca. In the early nineteen-thirties, the author of ‘La
venganza de Don Mendo’ used to spend six months a
year in the Parador at Manzanares. The fruit of those
stays and his prolific imagination was the novel entitled ‘El refugio’ which he published in 1935 with a storyline that takes place in the establishment.

A lo largo de su historia, los Paradores se han convertido en lugares de referencia para otros muchos escritores como el premio Nobel Ernest Hemingway, el poeta
Federico García Lorca o el escritor de la generación ‘beat’
Paul Bowles, que se dejaron embrujar por la magia del
de Úbeda (Jaén). Y en 1973, el escritor inglés Graham
Greene visitó por primera vez España y se quedó encandilado con el Parador de Puebla de Sanabria, al que regresó
en varias ocasiones para pasar largas temporadas.
Con todo, uno de los autores que más ha difundido por
el mundo la imagen de Paradores ha sido el brasileño
Paolo Coelho, que a mediados de los noventa recorrió

En febrero de 1978, los llamados
‘Padres de la Constitución’
se retiraron al Parador de Gredos
para llevar a cabo la redacción
definitiva de la Carta Magna

Llorca, Miquel Roca y Jordi Solé
Tura se reunieron en el llamado
Salón del Silencio, una sala
que actualmente se conserva
prácticamente igual que en
aquellas fechas, aunque
ha cambiado su nombre por
el de ‘Salón de los Ponentes’.
A pesar de la trascendencia
de aquella reunión, los políticos
aprovecharon para hacer turismo

Gredos to draw up the definitive
version of Spain’s Magna Carta.

the time as the Hall of Silence,
now maintained practically the
same as it was then but with the
name of Hall of Speakers. Despite
the great significance of that
gathering, the politicians also took
advantage of the setting for some
tourism and visited, among other
locations, the bridge at Aliseda de

(salvo Jordi Solé Tura) volvieron
a reunirse en el Parador
de Gredos para conmemorar
el 25 aniversario de la Constitución
Española. Recordaron aquellos
días de 1978 en los que trabajaron,
dialogaron y negociaron con tesón
con el objetivo de dotar a la
transición de una Constitución
que garantizase una democracia
sólida y duradera. La reunión
se culminó con la firma de la
llamada ‘Declaración de Gredos’,
en la que reconocían la gran
importancia del papel cumplido
por la Constitución.

of them (except Jordi Solé Turá)
met once more in the Parador
at Gredos to commemorate the
25th anniversary of the Spanish
Constitution. They recalled those
heady days of 1978 during
which they worked, discussed
and negotiated ceaselessly
in order to endow Spain’s
Transition with a Constitution
that would guarantee a solid,
long-lasting democracy. Their
meeting culminated in the
signing of the ‘Declaration
of Gredos’, in which they
acknowledged the enormous
importance of the role played
by the Constitution.

The Paradores also became landmarks for many other
writers. The Nobel prize-winner Ernest Hemingway, the
poet Federico García Lorca or the beat generation’s Paul
Bowles were all spellbound by the magic of Úbeda (Jaén).
And in 1973, the English novelist Graham Greene first
visited Spain and was captivated by the Parador at Puebla de Sanabria, to which he returned on numerous
occasions for lengthy stays.
But, one of the writers who has done most to spread the
image of the Paradores throughout the world has been
the Brazilian novelist Paolo Coelho, when he travelled
along the pilgrim’s path to Santiago to Compostela in

El Séptimo Arte ha contado
en numerosas ocasiones con
las instalaciones de los Paradores
para recrear sus escenarios.
En 1961 se realizó el rodaje de
‘El Cid’ en el Castillo de Peñíscola
y sus protagonistas, Charlton
Heston y Sophia Loren, durmieron
en el Parador de Benicarló.
Apenas cuatro años después,
el galardonado director Orson
Welles utilizó el castillo medieval
de Cardona, que veinte años más
tarde sería inaugurado como
Parador de Turismo, para rodar
‘Campanadas a medianoche’.
En 1992, con motivo de la
celebración del V Centenario
del Descubrimiento de América,
el director Ridley Scott rodó
en el Parador de Sigüenza el filme
‘1942’, basado en la vida de
Cristobal Colón. Y en 1999 un
agente 007, Pierce Brosnan, estuvo
en el de Cuenca durante el rodaje
de ‘El mundo nunca es suficiente’...

PARADORES AND FILMS
The Seventh Art has often taken
advantage of the installations of
Paradores to play out its dramas.
In 1961, the film version of
‘El Cid’ was filmed in the Castle
of Peñíscola and its stars, Charlton
Heston and Sophia Loren, stayed
in the Parador at Benicarló. Just
four years later, the renowned
director Orson Welles used
the mediaeval castle of Cardona,
converted into a Parador twenty
years afterwards, to shoot the film
‘Chimes at Midnight’.
In the year 1992, on the occasion
of the 500th anniversary of the
Discovery of America, director
Ridley Scott used the Parador
at Sigüenza to film ‘1492’,
based on the life of Christopher
Columbus. And in 1999 one of
the special agents 007, Pierce
Brosnan, made the most of his
stay in the Parador at Cuenca
during the filming of ‘The world
is not enough’. A thousand and
one stories related to the cinema.
The most recent ones, the shooting
of ‘Días de boda’ in the Parador
at Baiona and a few scenes
from the film ‘Te doy mis ojos’
in the one at Toledo.

Throughout their history, Paradores have also been visited by politicians and diplomats, who have enjoyed their
rooms as well as the gastronomy. In October 1991, Queen
Sofía had lunch in the Parador at Toledo with the wife
of Russia’s Prime Minister, Raisa Gorbacheva. Six years
later the scene was repeated with Hillary Clinton at the
same Parador, which has also been visited by the Prince
and Princess of Wales and Nelson Mandela. George Bush
Sr. visited the Parador at Ávila in November 2000 and
in June 2002 Mikhail Gorbachev received the European
King Charles V prize from HRH Prince Felipe, at a ceremony held in the Parador at Jarandilla de la Vera (Caceres). Above all, one of the visitors that evokes the best
memories is Charles De Gaulle. The former French president came to Spain in the summer of 1970 with the
idea of touring the country and start writing his memoirs
En sus 75 años de existencia, los Paradores también
han sido escogidos por políticos y diplomáticos, que han
disfrutado de sus habitaciones y han degustado su gastronomía. En octubre de 1991, por ejemplo, la Reina
Doña Sofía almorzó con la que fuera primera dama rusa,
Raisa Gorbachova, en el Parador de Toledo. Seis años
después repitió la escena con Hillary Clinton en el mismo
Parador, por el que también pasaron Carlos y Diana de
Gales o Nelson Mandela. George Bush padre visitó en
noviembre de 2000 el Parador de Ávila y, en junio de
2002, Mijail Gorbachov recibió el premio europeo Carlos V de manos del Príncipe Felipe, en un acto celebrado
en el Parador de Jarandilla de la Vera (Cáceres).

Con todo, una de las visitas que más se recuerdan es
la de Charles De Gaulle. El ex presidente francés llegó
a España en el verano de 1970 con la intención de hacer
un recorrido por nuestro país y comenzar la redacción
de sus memorias. Y fue en las habitaciones de diversos
Paradores, especialmente en el de Jaén, donde escribió
gran parte de su autobiografía. ¿Un dato curioso? Debido
a su gran estatura, De Gaulle necesitó una cama especial que fue trasladada de parador en parador.
Protagonistas de otros ámbitos de la vida pública han
cruzado las puertas de estos emblemáticos establecimientos. En 1947, Manuel Rodríguez ‘Manolete’ pasó la
última noche de su vida en el de Manzanares. Aún se
conserva la factura de la cena en la que tomó ‘una sopita
y albóndigas’. Y en la actualidad, la Selección Española
de fútbol se concentra en algunas ocasiones en el Parador de El Saler, en cuyo Campo de Golf también se ha
celebrado el torneo Seve Trophy, apadrinado por Severiano Ballesteros. Futbolistas, toreros, políticos... protagonistas de nuestra historia que, desde hace 75 años,
encuentran en los Paradores el escenario ideal para su
trabajo o para su tiempo de descanso y que contribuyen
a engrandecer aún más los establecimientos de la Red.

IN 1999, THE ROLLING STONES STAYED IN THE
PARADOR AT SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA.
Leading figures from other walks of public life have
also crossed the thresholds of the Paradores. In 1947,
the famed bullfighter Manuel Rodríguez ‘Manolete’
spent the last night of his life in the Parador at Manzanares. The bill for his last supper, at which he ate
‘some soup and meat balls’ can still be seen. In modern
times, the Spanish National football team often holds
its pre-match training meetings in the Parador at El
Saler, where the golf course has played host to the Seve
Trophy, sponsored by Severiano Ballesteros. Footballers, bullfighters, politicians… the protagonists of our
history who have found in the Paradores, over the last
75 years, the ideal setting for their work or leisure and
have contributed to making the network’s establishments even greater.
