Those Vanishing Days
Taller Artifex at Blue Mountain
by Robert Sievert
Tempera is the oldest known type of painting known. It was used in early Egypt and Greece and
remained the reigning art technique until the development of oil painting in the Renaissance.
Not being that familiar with tempera myself, I will give you what I know. One works on a panel or
canvas with pigment that is mixed with egg yolk. The process has always seemed difficult to me
as one has to amass dry pigments and mix them on demand. Also one can only mix small
batches at a time and this medium is fast drying. But I have seen some remarkable work in
tempera. New York artist Tomar Levine painted an unforgettable still life using tempera. To this
day, years later, I remember the clarity and brilliance of the painting, especially notable, a
robin's egg placed on a saucer. What is most memorable is the radiant blue of the bird's egg.
Tempera can have some dazzling effects So when a show of beautiful paintings with a spirited
glow and done in tempera arrives it seems like a special event. THOSE VA(R)NISHING DAYS
was the title of an exhibition of a group of artists from Mexico City who all work in tempera. (The
play on vanishing/varnishing is elaborated in their catalog). The group seem to be a studio,
Taller Artifex, who produced a beautiful exhibition seen this summer at the BLUE MOUNTAIN
GALLERY. This is a most compelling group of artists. They work in a variety of styles but there
was a remarkable consistency to the work.
There was a wonderful warmth to all the work in this show. Was this the quality of tempera that
we are unused to seeing, or was this just a special group of artist? Whether it was one or the
other or perhaps both, the show had a special radiance to it.
Alicia Amador: MI PROPIA VERDAD, Egg tempera/canvas, 35.4" x 35.4", 2009
Alicia Amador (see above, and first page) has a beautiful loose style of working in which figures
seem to amass themselves in an atmosphere created with color and deep tonalities. Without
linear definition, there is a floating formlessness to this work. It is brought into focus with
overlaying colors, rich and intense. Figures intertwined with darkness. I have no idea what
makes this painting so smashing but it was the highlight of the show for me.
All of the artists in the group seem to be talented and dedicated.
Taller Artifex is to be congratulated on presenting an exhibit that was consistent, elegant and
illuminating. They have given tempera painting a new face in the contemporary art scene.

Meetings with Maria Fusco and Raimundas
Malašauskas
The CAC continues the series of events called “3 Uses of the Knife” (co-organised in 2009 with
artnews.lt and the National Gallery of Art) and invites you to the meetings with Maria Fusco and
Raimundas Malašauskas at the CAC Reading Room.
Friday 15 January at 6pm
Maria Fusco: What Am I? Notes on Art Writing
Maria Fusco, a writer, editor and academic based in London, will present a three-part lecture
which will debate what contemporary art writing might be, and how best it may be located. She
will present examples of her own writing as well as discuss “The Happy Hypocrite”, her journal
for and about experimental writing.
About Maria Fusco: Born in Belfast, she contributes to a broad range of international
publications, is Director of Art Writing at Goldsmiths, University of London, and is the
founder/editor of “The Happy Hypocrite”, a journal for and about experimental art writing. In
2009 she was the Critic-in-Residence at Kadist Art Foundation, Paris and is currently the
inaugural Writer-in-Residence at Whitechapel Gallery, London.
Saturday 16 January at 6pm
Raimundas Malašauskas: Doodling, Scripting and Life-Writing at Large
A tour to three events happening at different times: “Paper Exhibition” (an exhibition in New
York that was an adaptation of the book that will be released in future), “Hypnotic Show” (a
temporary social structure of engaging into cognitive acts through shared practices of art and
hypnosis, already presented in San Francisco, Paris and Los Angeles) and “Clifford Irving
Show” (a variety show inspired by at least two fake biographies and intended as a meeting of
authors and characters). With participation of some of the authors and characters.
The writer Raimundas Malašauskas worked as a curator at the CAC from 1995 to 2006, his
projects including the weekly CAC TV television programe (produced under the slogan “Every
program is a pilot, every program is the final episode” for three years). From 2007 to 2008 he
was a Visiting Curator at California College of Arts, San Francisco, and, until recently, a curator-
at-large of Artists Space, New York. In 2007- co-wrote the libretto of Cellador, the opera in
Paris. His works evolve around contemporary phenomena, persons, biographies and stories,
addressing the parallel worlds of science, media, film, literature and mass culture. www.rye.tw
“Three Uses of the Knife” is a series of meetings with experienced writers, editors, critics and
thinkers. It is intended for everyone interested in art criticism and writing on (and as) art. The
issues addressed during these events include the genres, forms, functions and strategies of
contemporary art writing and criticism. The title of the series is borrowed from David Mamet’s
book “Three Uses of the Knife: On the Nature and Purpose of Drama”. Please find more
information about the previous events of the series here.
