LAC News – The Committee’s First Meeting
The Committee held its first meeting Saturday, February 27 th, at the Main Library. Although not
everyone who expressed interest in joining was able to be present, a great cross section of
interested parties was present. Parents of library kids, adult library users, youth and staff were
all represented.
We introduced ourselves to the meeting: Heather Folmar (Library Operations Manager) as the
facilitator, Sue Stewart, President of the Friends of the Library, as the proposed Chairwoman of
the Committee, and our Youth Civic Engagement Interns as both members and support staff for
Committee activity.
We showed everyone a Powerpoint about the Committee (check it out on the website), its
members, and its goals and projects. We then asked everyone for comments and questions.
Everyone who spoke expressed concern about the library’s future direction given its current
challenges, and support for the Committee’s objective to make the library a place where all
who come can read, study, and think in peace and harmony.
We fielded questions about the two major projects for the Committee that the meeting
presented, and encouraged new members and interested nonmembers to contact their
Councilperson and County Supervisor to advocate for them.
Library Reconfiguration
Attendees understood the need to make the library more manageable, finding ways to
decrease the frequency and seriousness of visitors’ behavior problems. An approach that
shows promise was presented at the meeting: reconfiguring the library’s public spaces to
concentrate users within sight of staff. Staff proposes to remove a number of bookshelves in
the center of the main floor in front of the Information Desk, and replace them with tables and
chairs. All existing public seating on the Main Floor and Mezzanine would now be moved and
placed in this open area, where staff can monitor visitors’ behavior and interactions.
Attendees were concerned about the possibility of using library funds to pay for the
reconfiguration, contending that these funds were needed for programs and materials that
they did not want to see diminished. This concern was added to the meeting’s “issue bin”,
where staff records items of interest to be considered at later meetings.
OCTA Terminal
Staff gave the Committee some good news: The County has purchased the abandoned OCTA
terminal at Santa Ana Boulevard and Ross, to be used as a shelter for the homeless in bad
weather. We expressed the hope that the County will expand the use of the terminal to include
essential services for people who need them badly, including: Storage for belongings, rest
rooms, showers, laundry facilities, social/medical services, and especially, a sheltered place to
receive food and to eat it in comfort (tables and chairs, etc.).
Attendees were interested in this new development and in favor of the committee pursuing its
implementation.

LAC Noticias - Primera Reunión del Comité
El sábado, 27 de Febrero, el Comité llevo a cabo su primera reunión en la Biblioteca Central de
Santa Ana. Aunque no todos los que expresaron interés pudieron estar presente, una gran
parte de los interesados asistieron. Los padres de los niños que asisten a la biblioteca, los
adultos usuarios de la biblioteca, jóvenes, así como el personal, estuvieron representados.
Nos presentamos: como facilitadora, Heather Folmar (Jefa de Operaciones de la Biblioteca), Sue
Stewart, Presidente de los Amigos de la Biblioteca, como posible presidente del Comité, y
nuestro grupo de jóvenes dedicados al trabajo comunitario como miembros y personal de
apoyo para actividades del Comité.
Mostramos una presentación en Powerpoint sobre el Comité, sus miembros, objetivos y
proyectos (podrá encontrar esta presentación en nuestra página web. Luego seguimos con los
comentarios y preguntas del público. Todos los que hablaron expresaron preocupación por el
futuro de la biblioteca y la dirección en la que la misma está tomando debido a los retos
actuales, y al mismo tiempo apoyaron el objetivo del Comité en hacer de la biblioteca un lugar
donde todos los que vienen puedan leer, estudiar y pensar en paz y armonía.
Respondimos a preguntas sobre los dos proyectos más importantes del Comité que se
presentaron en la reunión, y exhortamos a los nuevos miembros y a los no-miembros
interesados a contactar a su Concejal y el Supervisor del Condado para conseguir su apoyo.
Reconfiguración de la Biblioteca
El público entiende la necesidad de tener una biblioteca más manejable, mediante alternativas
para disminuir la frecuencia y gravedad de los problemas de comportamiento de los visitantes.
Un plan que se muestra prometedor fue presentado en la reunión: la reconfiguración de los
espacios públicos de la biblioteca para que de esa manera los usuarios estén a la vista del
personal. El personal propone eliminar algunos estantes ubicados hacia el medio del piso
principal, frente al Escritorio de Información, y reemplazarlos con mesas y sillas. Todos los
asientos para el público existentes en la planta principal y el segundo piso serían trasladados y
reubicados en este espacio abierto, donde el personal pueda monitorear el comportamiento y
las interacciones de los visitantes.
Los asistentes expresaron su preocupación por la posibilidad de utilizar los fondos de la
biblioteca para pagar por la reconfiguración, argumentando que tales fondos se necesitaban
para los programas y materiales los cuales no quisieran ver afectados. Esta punto ha sido
añadida a la lista de asuntos por discutir en las próximas reuniones.
Terminal OCTA
El personal presento las siguientes buenas noticias: El Condado ha comprado el terminal de
autobús OCTA que hace años está en desuso en Santa Ana Boulevard y Ross, para personas sin
hogar como como refugio durante el mal tiempo. Tenemos la esperanza que el Condado
proveerá servicios esenciales para las personas que realmente lo necesitan, incluyendo:
almacenamiento para pertenencias personales, baños, duchas, lavandería, servicios sociales /
médicos; y sobre todo, un lugar seguro para recibir alimentos y poder comer con comodidad
(mesas y sillas, etc.).
El público se mostró interesado en este nuevo plan y estuvieron a favor de que el Comité
prosiga con la implementación del mismo.
