THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
G.R.A.C.E: Where trafficked kids are understood (IV)
‘The affected kids are from all neighborhoods. You may know some of these girls and boys’
By: Jan Pudlow, Senior Editor
Victims are not exclusively foster children.
“A lot of times parents are asking for help with their teenagers, but they are unwilling to care for the
child themselves,” said Keyla Bade, division chief of Children’s Legal Services. “Sometimes, the
parents feel threatened themselves because of their child’s behavior, and they say, ‘I just can’t have
the child in my home anymore.’ There are drugs and bad people coming around, and they are trying
to protect their other children.”
Some parents have drug issues of their own. “I’ve seen at least two cases where parents themselves
are exploiting their children sexually,” Bade said. At G.R.A.C.E. Court, everyone comes together to
try to help the traumatized child.
“Everyone in the courtroom has received specialized training in human trafficking,” said Ruiz. “So our language, when we have a child
present, is really helping and healing the child and not traumatizing the child any further. The clinical team is constantly in the hearings.
And if the child is present, we make sure the therapist is standing right there by the child. Having a judge understand this population and
the trauma involved really helps.”
At G.R.A.C.E. Court, success is measured differently. “We have learned that if we have a child who went from running away 365 days a
year to running away and coming back to a foster home, that is a success. Or, if we had a child not going to school ever, she may continue to run away, but at least she is coming to school. That is a success story,” Ruiz said.
“We have had a few cases where the children said, ‘You know what? I have had it and I’m not running anymore.’ We do have children
doing extremely well who have come to understand that this type of life is not what they deserve.”

verdadero triunfo", dijo Ruiz.
