Summer Reading Adventure The Educator’s Toolkit Educators and librarians alike are well aware of studies indicating that students who engage in reading over the summer retain their skills and often increase their learning abilities. To accomplish this, your public library’s summer reading program has a renewed commitment to keeping young brains active by engaging kids with the right mix of fun activities that we believe will keep them reading, learning, doing and experiencing things all summer long. As educators, you and your staff hold important positions as influential adults in the lives of your students and the library knows we can’t reach your kids without your help. One simple tool for encouraging student achievement together is this Educator’s Toolkit. In this toolkit, you will find resources that make it easy to encourage your students to participate in the Summer Reading Adventure. SRA Educator’s Toolkit 2016 Summer Reading Adventure Announcement Breaking News: Visiting the Library is Good for Your Health! By Whitney Walker, Lincoln Park Library What comes to mind when you think of health and wellness? Maybe it’s sports – like soccer, mountain climbing, biking, and running. Or maybe it’s taking care of yourself – like getting a good night’s sleep, scheduling a physical, and drinking plenty of water. But did you know that adding some library time into your daily or weekly routine is just as healthy? Starting May 29, High Plains Library District’s Summer Reading Adventure begins, and with it, two months full of fun, engaging, and active opportunities for children and teens. They can participate by filling out a reading log as well as coming to events. This year our theme for Summer Reading Adventure is health and wellness. The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well‐being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” So how does our Summer Reading Adventure address all these aspects of health? Physical well‐being: Kids and teens who participate in Summer Reading Adventure don’t have to be competitive or good at sports. But they will have opportunities to discover new active interests, such as Zumba or yoga. They might try new healthy foods that they cook themselves. Or they might check off an activity on their reading log, such as flying a kite. Mental well‐being: We’ll have events to challenge kids’ minds ‐ they could learn how to play chess or build things out of Legos. Or they might learn about the benefits of relaxation by doodling or making a Zen garden. And simply checking off boxes on their reading log can be good for their mind –according to the US Department for Education, students who read for fun are likely to perform better in school. Social well‐being: At all of our events, kids and teens will have the opportunity to make new friends and meet people who share similar interests. Even if they don’t attend events, they will gain social skills just by filling out their reading log: babies and toddlers will benefit from the social time spent reading with their caregivers, and reading can also help children learn empathy and how to understand others. Ages 0‐18 can sign up at any of our library locations or online at at http://www.mylibrary.us/events. They can sign up anytime between May 29 and August 1. When they sign up they’ll get a reading log which they can complete for the opportunity to win three prizes (including books!). The Summer Reading Adventure and all our events are free! But the health benefits don’t stop after the summer. We have events that encourage healthy living and reading all year long. Visiting the library is a healthy habit that anyone can start!
