Western Sahara Intergroup reiterates its solidarity with Sahrawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik
It has been five and a half years since the arbitrary detention of the Gdeim Izik group and three years since
they were condemned by a Moroccan military court to sentences ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment
for their peaceful struggle against Morocco's occupation.
After a first hunger strike on the 24th and 25th February, several members of Gdeim Izik, joined in solidarity by
st
other Sahrawi prisoners, renewed their hunger strike on the 1 of March. This has lasted for over a month,
notwithstanding the many difficulties encountered, including the denial of health assistance.
We celebrate their courage and that of the many demonstrators that took to the streets to support and
denounce the situation of the Sahrawi political prisoners, defying the silence imposed by Morocco on the
Occupied Territories during the visit of Ban-Ki Moon to the refugee camps in Tindouf and to the Liberated
Territories of Western Sahara.
On behalf of the Western Sahara Intergroup, we demand the annulment of the military trial that led to the
conviction of the Gdeim Izik group and we reiterate the European Parliament's call for the immediate release
of all Sahrawi political prisoners.
"The prisoners have been peacefully demonstrating against the unlawful exploitation of resources by the EU.
They call for release or an appeal and for a prompt transfer to the prison in El Aaiun, in order to be closer to
their families. The imprisonment and lifelong incarceration for taking part in a peaceful demonstration is out of
proportion" stated MEP Norbert Neuser, Intergroup Chair (S&D, Germany)
"Morocco should obey to the rule of law and to the rules of democracy. After years of unlawful occupation and
violations of the human rights of the Sahrawi people, Morocco has the chance to show it has a minimum of
respect for young lives by releasing these political prisoners immediately, as requested by the European
Parliament. " declared MEP Ivo Vajgl, Intergroup Vice-Chair (ALDE, Slovenia).
"The Gdeim Izik prisoners were condemned by a Moroccan military court of the Occupying Power, expressly
prohibited by the Fourth Geneva Convention and even by the Moroccan Constitution. " stated Paloma López
(GUE/NGL, Spain), Vice-Chair of the Intergroup on Western Sahara at the European Parliament. "The criminal
procedure has been fraught by numerous errors rendering it legally invalid, such as the systematic use of
torture to extract confessions during investigations according to international observers, including Members of
the European Parliament. Therefore, the Gdeim Izik Group must be immediately and unconditionally
released".
"We salute the strength of the Gdeim Izik prisoners, which have continued their political fight in the isolation
and harshness of Morocco's prisons, hundreds of kilometres away from their relatives in Western Sahara"

"We stress that the rejection of the Moroccan government to the legitimate demands of the Saharawi political
prisoners of Gdeim Izik is a flagrant violation of the requirements of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
and the right to life. We reiterate the repeated requests made by the European Parliament calling for
immediate release of all Saharawi political prisoners and respect for the fundamental rights of the people of

El Intergrupo del Sáhara Occidental reitera su solidaridad con los presos saharauis de Gdeim Izik
Han transcurrido cinco años y medio desde la detención arbitraria del grupo de Gdeim Izik y tres años desde
que fueran condenados por un tribunal militar marroquí a sentencias de entre 20 años y cadena perpetua por
su lucha pacífica contra la ocupación marroquí.
Después de una primera huelga de hambre los días 24 y 25 de febrero, varios miembros de Gdeim Izik, a los
que se unieron en solidaridad otros presos saharauis, reiniciaron su huelga de hambre el 1 de marzo. Huelga
que se prolongó durante más de un mes, a pesar de las dificultades encontradas, incluida la negación de
asistencia sanitaria.
Celebramos su valentía y la de los numerosos manifestantes que salieron a las calles para apoyar y denunciar
la situación de los presos políticos saharauis, desafiando el silencio impuesto por Marruecos en los Territorios
Ocupados durante la visita de Ban-Ki Moon a los campos de refugiados de Tinduf y los territorios liberados del
Sáhara occidental.
En nombre del Integrupo del Sáhara Occidental, exigimos la anulación del juicio militar que condujo a la
condena del grupo de Gdeim Izik y reiteramos la llamada del Parlamento Europeo a la liberación inmediata de
todos los presos políticos saharauis
"Los prisioneros se han manifestado pacíficamente contra la explotación ilegal de recursos por parte de la UE.
Piden la liberación o una apelación y una rápida transferencia a la prisión de El Aaiún, con el fin de estar más
cerca de sus familias. La reclusión y el encarcelamiento de por vida por participar en una manifestación
pacífica está fuera de proporción ", declaró el eurodiputado Norbert Neuser, Presidente del Intergrupo (S & D,
Alemania)
"Marruecos debe obedecer la ley y las reglas del juego democrático. Después de años de ocupación ilegal y
violaciones de los derechos humanos de la población saharaui, Marruecos tiene la oportunidad de demostrar
que tiene un mínimo de respeto por estas jóvenes vida liberando a estos presos políticos de inmediato,
conforme a lo solicitado por el Parlamento Europeo" declaró el eurodiputado Ivo Vajgl, Vicepresidente del
Intergroupo (ALDE, Eslovenia).
"Los presos de Gdeim Izik fueron condenados por un tribunal militar marroquí de la potencia ocupante,
procedimiento expresamente prohibido por la Cuarta Convención de Ginebra e incluso la Constitución
marroquí" declaró Paloma López (GUE / NGL, España), Vice-Presidenta del Intergrupo del Sáhara Occidental en
el Parlamento Europeo. "El procedimiento penal ha estado plagado de numerosos errores que la invalidan
jurídicamente, tales como el uso sistemático de la tortura para obtener confesiones durante las
investigaciones según observadores internacionales, entre ellos miembros del Parlamento Europeo. Por lo
tanto, el grupo de Gdeim Izik debe ser puesto inmediata e incondicionalmente en libertad ".

dureza de las prisiones de Marruecos, a cientos de kilómetros de sus parientes en el Sáhara Occidental",

saharauis de Gdeim Izik es una violación flagrante de los requisitos de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos
Humanos y el derecho a la vida. Reiteramos las repetidas solicitudes de la Parlamento Europeo pidiendo la
liberación inmediata de todos los presos políticos saharauis y el respeto de los derechos fundamentales del
