I’mincrediblyexcitedaboutthestarttothe2015-2016schoolyearatMaureenJoy.Ihavehadtheopportunitytomeet withmanyofyouthroughoutthesummerandduringBacktoSchoolNight;however,ifwehavenotofficiallymetpleaseallow metointroducemyself.MynameisMarkBaileyandIamthenewprincipalatMaureenJoyCharterSchool.IcometoDurham afterworkingasateacherandadministratorinNewOrleansPublicSchoolsforthepast15years.Ihavebeenoverwhelmedby thewarmandgenerouswelcomefromtheJoyfamilyandtheDurhamcommunity.Iknowwe’rereadyforanextraordinary schoolyear. Iwantedtotakethisopportunitytohighlightsomenewprogramsattheschoolandtoinformyouofafewchanges: Curriculum/Instruction • • • • • NumberStories/Investigations(K-4)andNumberTalks(4-8):Ourteachersareusingconceptualmathematics andbuildingoffstudentknowledgetosolvecomplexproblems. Social-EmotionalLearningCurriculum:OurschoolhasadoptedSecondStep,aresearch-basedapproachtosocialemotionallearningthatwillhelpscholarsdeveloptheirsocial-emotionalskillsincludingmakingfriends,managing emotions,solvingproblems,communication,coping,anddecision-makingskills.Thiswillhelpthemmakegoodchoices andavoidpitfallssuchaspeerpressure,substanceabuse,andbullying.(Kindergarten–8thGrade) WritingClass:Inadditiontolanguageartsandreading,ourscholarswillhaveadedicatedwritingclassinwhichthey receiveregularwritinginstructionandfeedbackontheirwriting.(4thGrade–8thGrade) SocialStudies:InsteadofclassifyingourHumanitiescoursesasFictionandNon-Fiction,wehavereturnedtoamore traditionalscheduleformiddleschoolscholarswithEnglish/LanguageArtsandSocialStudies.(5thGrade–8thGrade) Investigations:We’reenthusiasticaboutourmathcurriculum,Investigations.We’reconfidentitwillbeavaluable resourceforourteachersandourscholarsastheyattackincreasinglycomplexproblems.(Kindergarten–4thGrade) NewAdditions • • • • • • We’repleasedtointroduceournewschoolsecretary,AprilDeLeon.Inthepastfewmonths,Ms.DeLeonhasproven tobeaninvaluableresourceforourscholars,families,teachers,andcommunity. Whenyouhaveamoment,checkoutthegrassonthefield.Wehopethiswillprovideourscholarswithamore desirableenvironmentforrecessandphysicaleducation. Ourschoolhasinvestedintechnologybypurchasing80Chromebooks.ThenewcomputersalloweachK-4classto haveacomputerstationandeach5-8classtoaccessaclasssetofcomputers. We’realsothrilledtointroduceOniHarrison,ournewTechnologyTeacher.Weknowhowimportanttechnologyis forthedevelopmentofourscholarsandwethinktheydeservetheverybest. OurscholarathleteswillbeabletotakeadvantageofourAthleticsBus.Thisbuswillprovidetransportationtoour scholarathleteswithoutdisruptingourregulararrival/dismissaltransportation. Studentshavealreadyenjoyedthefoodfromournewschoolnutritionprovider.WehavepartneredwithDurham PublicSchoolsforschoollunchandbreakfastandtheresults,sofar,havebeendelicious. Changesfromthe2014-2015SchoolYear We’vemadeanattempttolimitthenumberofchangesfromthepreviousschoolyear.Mr.QuigleyandMs.Parkerdida tremendousjobofpartneringwithyoutocreateaschoolworthyoftheamazingscholarsweserve.Thereareafewchanges wehopearewelcomenewstoyou: • SweaterPolicy:Previously,scholarswererequiredtowearabluecardigansweaterwiththeMaureenJoylogo.These sweatersarestillpartoftheuniformandtheylookfabulous.However,wearealsoawarethattheyareexpensive. Effectiveimmediately,wewillalsoallowstudentstowearaplain,navybluecardigansweateroraplain,navyblue sweatervest.Thecardigansweatercanhaveazipperorbuttons. • ShoePolicy:Previously,scholarswererequiredtowearallblacktennisshoes.Scholarsarestillrequiredtowearall blackshoes;however,inadditiontotennisshoestheyareallowedtowearMaryJane’s,Toms,dressboots,ordress shoes.(Onenote:ifyourchildisparticipatinginphysicaleducationwestronglyadvisethattheyweartennisshoes.) • TuesdayFolders:Lastyear,scholarsbroughthomeaTuesdayFolderwithcommunicationfromtheschooleach TuesdayandtheirpaycheckwithinformationregardingtheirprogresseachFriday.Wearegoingtochangethefolder fromaTuesdayfoldertoaFridayfolder.BeginningFriday,September11,scholarswillbesenthomewitha foldercontainingtheirweeklypaycheckandallschool-homecommunicationeachFriday.
