Improperly discarded cigarette butts have
long been a nuisance, but they also put
property owners, managers, and tenants at
risk. Fires from lit cigarette butts have
caused serious damage to property and put
many lives in danger.
In 2006, cigarettes were the #1 cause of fire
deaths accounting for 700 fatalities and
1,340 reported injuries.
We recommend that you discard cigarettes in a non-combustible container,
such as a metal coffee can, that is filled with sand or
water.
Don't dispose of cigarettes in planters or landscaped
areas. They can smolder for hours before flames
develop.
In addition, you should never throw a cigarette out of
your car window. Not only could it start a fire but it is
also against the law.
Smoking and alcohol don't mix! Never light up a
cigarette after you've consumed alcoholic beverages or
medications that may make you drowsy.
Characteristics of smoking-caused fires:
 Almost 30 percent start in the bedroom, living room or family room.
 Bedding or upholstered furniture are the first items ignited in 44 percent
of smoking caused fires.
 Fire fatalities from smoking spike in
the early morning hours when victims are asleep.
 Higher levels of property loss compared to other types of residential
structure fires are typical.
