Reactivity of advanced oxidation media. Description: Advanced oxidation processes are proper technologies for the treatment of wastewaters containing high organic content, with special interest in aqueous streams characterized by their low biodegradability. The use of these technologies involves the formation of powerful oxidants such as hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen peroxide, etc. that contribute to the degradation process of the target compounds and their oxidation intermediates. Nevertheless, when the organic content is high in the presence of chlorides, species with persistent character can be generated along the oxidation process, among which are polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs). The main objective is to study the viability of the degradation of different matrices by means of an advanced oxidation process, understanding the reaction mechanisms involved along the oxidation and paying particular attention to the formation of highly toxic intermediates such as PCDD/Fs.
