…Me pagaron 10.000 Pesetas. ¡Me marché a París! I have Today the pleasure and honor to present the figure of a daughter and artist ofJávea, MIRACLE OR MIRACLES LAMBERT BOUTAN. When I finish the presentation, I will hopefully have left a footprint of Mila in your memory, as it was left in me after making this immersion in her person and her history. Recent photo of MILA at the MUVIM. A year and a half ago there was still exhibited the exhibition entitled THE LAMBERT, BETWEEN PARIS AND JÁVEA at the Museum of Enlightenment and Modernity in Valencia, MuVIM. This summer the show comes to Jávea, and documents, photographs, books, maps, etc.. will be distributed along the rooms of this arqueological and ethnographic museum, Ca Lambert (Lambert name again), and the Cable House. Of course we talk about the Miracle Lambert, or Milagrito or, as they used to call her while her parents were alive. In addition, the IB gallery, which I direct, will present an exhibition of the paintings of Miracle at Café D'Art exhibition room, again located on a street named Lambert, at the Port of Javea. Photo of MILA with two of his children. Ironically, the recognition given to the Lambert family in Jávea, not short in the sense of honoring their name, does not correspond to the diffusion of their relevance for the history of the town in the twentieth century. We hope, this year, together, we can cover this gap and flesh out the names of both the pedestrian sreet at the port as the cultural space of the Carrer Major. The Valencia exhibition, has been redefined and shown in the Mubag of Alicante along this Spring 2014 and finally, now comes to Javea. The part of the collection exhibited is the result of a very interesting and intense work by the curator of the exhibition, Carolina Ruiz and the Muvim curators Salvador Calabuig and specially Pep Monter, who wrote the catalog. Nevertheless, it merely reflects the tip of the iceberg of the legacy Lambert. The relationship of four generations of the Lambert family with Jávea is detailed since 1920, when the family moved to Spain; also in parallel, it reflects their relationship with the Illustrated Europe of theTwentieth Century; and finally with another illustration, in this case the graphic illustration on paper that grandfather, father, daughter and grandchildren have had throughout history Lambert saga . Photo of Mila at Lambert expo Even more, Milagro, Mila or Milagrito, depending on who's calling her, is present in each of the corners of Jávea. She knows all families in the village, especially their elders. She speaks a perfect Valenciano and she feels in her element among our people, because her life has always been between Paris and Jávea. MILA’S FAMILY PHOTOS Mila's grandfather, Louis André Lambert, a Swiss architect, however studied in Germany, in Stuttgart, and also in Paris, with the most advanced architects of the time, such as the rationalist architect Violet Le-Duc. It was then the most advanced city in the world, not only in art and design, but also in art and western thought. Just a few years after he finished his studies, in 1889, the Eifel Tower was opened and the Universal Exhibition was held in Paris. After this stage, he returned to Stuttgart, where he married and worked as an architect in Germany. Photo of Mila’s Father His son, Mila's father, Andres Jordan Lambert, which gives the name to our pedestrian street in Puerto de Jávea, was born in Stuttgart in 1884 but retained his Swiss citizenship. For one year he studied architecture in Stuttgart but after changing his mind, he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Munich. He worked in Germany as a painter and illustrator for publishers, magazines (including magazine Simplicissimus, socialist-leaning, which was later vetoed and closed) and for private editions. In 1908 he moved to Paris, where they were new job opportunities as an illustrator for bibliophile books and also had painting commissions. During the Great War of 1914 he spent long periods in Switzerland (as a Swiss citizen he had completed his military service in his country and was was not drafted) and made several trips to Spain where he visited also Granada and covered mainly the Mediterranean coast. The romantic Pursuit of the South at the end of the nineteenth century attracted many Europeans to our country. Mila's father reflected the people and their quaint customs on a large collection of drawings, prints and watercolours. They are wonderful. It was during one of those trips, while visiting Valencia, that a friend told him about Jávea, came to visit it. It was then when a project came up in mind, but it would take a few years more to become true. In 1917 Hans Diefenbach, his best friend since childhood and also during his studies in Munich, (Hans studied medicine) and partly adopted by Andres’ mother, as his own mother had died when he was a child, died as a result of a grenade during the Great War of 1914, being a military doctor. If he had not enrolled and been killed during the war, he would have had the same end, in 1919, as his fellow mates of the German Social Democratic Party, close to the pacifist communist wing, among which there were Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. Photo of Mila’s Mother But what matters is that his death leaves most of his estate to Andrés Lambert. He did not want his money to be used for a political cause, and this was explicit in his will. Photo of Mila’s Parents In 1918, during a visit to Switzerland, Andres Lambert meets Rachel Costrinski, whom he married a few months later. He is 34 and she 23. He founds the Janus magazine in Paris in 1919, along with a promoter friend. But at the same time he tells Rachel his inspiration about using the Diefenbach inheritance to buy land in Jávea and build a house to live permanently. His wish is to create, in the manner of a new Arcadia, this ideal imaginary place described by the poets of the Renaissance and Romanticism, a place away from the installed irrationality of those days; and conceive and raise children, yet to come. It was a voluntary exile. An hommage to his friend and nearly-brother. The disappearance of reason as a fundamental structure of thought and the emergence of instinct as the instigator of the new reality, unleashed an apparent chaos within a modernity in which Andrés Lambert was not comfortable. Thus, in 1920, they bought a large estate in the Portichol area in Jávea and built a new house on top of a ruin. The house will be called Janus, as the magazine of Paris, but in practice they will call it ‘La Caseta’ Photo of La Caseta André paints and prints his engravings in Jávea and travels to Paris several times a year to submit his work and receive new orders. Raquel, childless, and nevertheless very active in the community and responsive to the works on the house, stays alone in Jávea for long periods. At last, in 1931, when it seemed that the couple would have no children, Milagro was born, or Milagrito, as she signs on her paintings during puberty and youth, until she finally went to study in Paris. Milagro without the "s". Photo of Mila, her mother, her grandmother, and her brother The joy seizes his parents and grandmother. Grandfather architect, André-Louis Lambert and his wife had also installed in Jávea, but unfortunately he died in 1929 without knowing his granddaughter. Two years later, Juan Andres, Mila's brother, was born. The two children are raised in the house, at the countryside and asisting to la escoleta del Portichol, the nursery school. The town of Javea is far more thant six kilometers and transportation is difficult. Life goes happy and serene in this arcadia of Lambert. Notre Damme Photo It is 1936, and Civil War breaks out in Spain. Andrés Lambert's dream seems to be discontinued. The Lambert familymoves to Paris, where Mila and her brother attend school. Despite living just five minutes walk from Notre Dame they did not lose contact with the countryside life, that they often visit on holiday. The contact with nature, essential in the thought of his father, will leave a lifetime mark: Mila will reflect it again and again in his painting and in her children's illustrations; Juan Andres in his work as a doctor in Aketi (Rep. Democ. Congo) in Africa. Photo from La Caseta 2 Photo of Milagros with his brother At the end of the Civil War in 1939, the Lambert return to Spain. Doubts about whether to remain or not in Paris dissipate soon at the start of World War II. Mila recalls her adolescence in Jávea as the years in which they lived, she and her brother, as little savages. That refers to the freedom they enjoyed along the Portichol trails and paths, swiming in the creeks, biking, enjoy the endless outdoor hours with the company of dogs and many other animals, etc.. Photo of Mila and her brother with her father But none was wasting time. The interesting conversations around the fire, to see his father working with drawings, watercolors, prints; Mila absorbed it all and began to create his first paintings at an early age. She describes it thus: Photo of Mila dancing Portitxol Dances My interest in art was born in Portixol, at seven kilometers from Javea. I decided to make books for children, using my experience as a painter and the look I had on contemporary art. Cover Photo of Nathan 2 Mila, at 34 years, redesigns the world of children's literature and especially the way to illustrate it, to reach children more effectively and facilitate their reading comprehension, making it more colorful, cheerful and lively, and therefore more attractive. That's when she passes from painting to illustration. She advocates respect for children, for offering quality for children, books that cannot be broken and they can be read on the floor because they can be cleaned afterwards. Mila already knew the Japanese editions, which were magnificent. In 1967 die first Rachel and her mother a few months later his father André. While I was proposing my models to major publishers, I was said I was "elitist", also that the buyers are parents, grandparents, godmothers, who like what they had when they were children. I wanted a nice format, good paper, photo-quality, fair colors, and my books did not see the light because, they said, they were not commercial. That's when I decided to create my own publishing company in 1984. MILA Editions. In 2011 in Seoul, she receives the 1st Prize of the Ministry of Culture of South Korea for her books. Then Milagros thinks that what she is doing in the schools she can do on TV. So she takes her idea to the French television. At that time it was the French state television and is the 2nd channel, Antenne 2, which had more specialized programming for children. From there, in 1978 she presented on TV FRANCE 2 the 'Papivole' emissions hugely successful, and which the children of that era still remember. She has also done other emissions as 'AVA, RIKO, TEO' that was broadcasted on TV FRANCE 5, the ARTE channel, and now have returned to replenish from Tuesday to Friday. This series have recently been translated also into Catalan. On the website of the publisher Gallimard Jeunesse I find: Do you know that Papivole hardly comes into existence? After much negotiation, Mila Boutan had got an appointment in the office of Armand Jammot on Antenne 2. The Youth Department of the chain, which in 1978 was still not well developed and the project that Mila proposes was not convincing Armand Jammot. Fate makes a group of children to appear shouting loudly through the halls of Antenne 2, arousing the curiosity of the producer. So he puts the challenge to the young designer Mila to take her piece of paper in front of youth groups and poof ... quickly conquered! Children participate, show their imagination and react so positively that filming is expected for a couple of weeks later! She has also done TV broadcasts with artists today (César, Arman, cambers, Jean-Pierre Raynaud). In 2009 the chain Singapour Okto (ex-TV12) acquires 'Ava, Riko, Teo'. She is currently working on creating the sets and characters from an animated series of 70 episodes produced by French TV in cooperation with the Korean TV. They are animations on paper.
