Dear Friends,
In last weeks” Corner” I wrote about attending my colleague Father Sheehy’s funeral in Boston.
When I received the bulletin this week from St. Francis Church in Braintree, Massachusetts where
Father once served, I was moved by the tributes of the parishioners. Here a a few of their comments:
Fr. Sheehy walked all over Braintree to bring communion to the sick
Fr. Sheehy received a sweater from us at Christmas and asked if we would care if he gave it away
to a poor man
Fr. Sheehy wrote to my husband every week of his illness
Fr. Sheehy found some good in everyone
Fr. Sheehy liked having money in his pocket so he could give it away!
Fr. Sheehy is where he always wanted to be.
The tributes went on, the above are just a few. After reading that pastor’s corner I thought:
‘What will people say about me when I am gone?” Good reflection! In fact this is a good question for
all of us to ask, what will others say about us?
For myself, I hope it won’t be that I planted trees and beautified the property or that I even built
an addition to the school and parish offices. I would hope it might be simply that I cared and loved as
Father Sheehy did. What thought comes immediately to our minds when we think of Mother Teresa of
Calcutta? Always love, love for others. And what about you? Some may have titles before your name
or many letters after, indicating scholastic achievements. Some may have owned a large home – that
probably we admit now is too big. Others may even have two homes. The question is however the same,
How do you want to be remembered? The following thoughts might help us in answering that question:

project. It includes cataloging the books for the Pre-K program
at Nativity School by labeling them and creating a database for
the teacher. She is also creating "book in a bag"
activities for some of the books. These activity
bags will be donated to the school for use by the
preschool and primary grade teachers. We wish

Three reasons explaining celibacy for Latin-rite priests

Q. Lately a fair number of clergy from other religious denominations who have converted to Catholicism have been permitted to become Roman Catholic priests and retain their marital status.
This raises for me the following question: If the Catholic Church is allowing this, why not change the celibacy requirement and permit all Catholic priests to marry?
I’m wondering, first, what the rationale is for the rule of celibacy and second, how Catholic priests ordained as
celibates feel about this new permission. (Columbia, Mo.)
A. In 1980, Pope John Paul II issued a “pastoral provision” that said Protestant and Anglican clergymen who
wished to become Catholic priests could do so and remain married. Since then, about 100 men in the United States have
been ordained as Roman Catholic priests, according to this provision.
Many Catholics do not know that the Roman Catholic Church had married priests up until the First Lateran Council
in 1123, when celibacy became the rule for Latin-rite Catholic priests.
The rationale for the discipline of celibacy is three-fold: It most closely mirrors Christ, who was unmarried; it
demonstrates that love can be real and strong without being physical, which is said to reflect the eternal life of heaven; and,
as Paul indicated in 1 Corinthians (7:32), it allows a man to be free from the cares of raising a family, so that he can focus
all of his energies on the work of the Lord.
Your question as to how Catholic priests ordained as celibates feel about this pastoral provision is a good one, and I
can only answer it anecdotally from random conservations I’ve had with priests.
Some, I suppose, do harbor a bit of envy that those newly ordained as Catholic clergy under this provision can
continue to enjoy family life with a wife and children, a choice that was not open to us when we were ordained.
But for the most part, Catholic priests seem grateful that they will be helped in their ministry by this new pool of
clergy.
What bothers a fair number of longtime priests is that there are several thousand men in the U.S. who have left the
Catholic priesthood (mainly in the 1960s and 1970s) to marry and whose talents and background would render them equally
suitable for the ministry and more so.

Marcos 7, 31-37: Hace oír a los sordos y hablar a los mudos.
En aquel tiempo, Jesús se marchó de la región de Tiro y
vino de nuevo, por Sidón, al mar de Galilea, atravesando la
Decápolis. Le presentan un sordo que, además, hablaba
con dificultad, y le ruegan imponga la mano sobre él. El,
apartándole de la gente, a solas, le metió sus dedos en los
oídos y con su saliva le tocó la lengua. Y, levantando los
ojos al cielo, dio un gemido, y le dijo: «Effatá», que quiere
decir: «¡Ábrete!» Se abrieron sus oídos y, al instante, se
soltó la atadura de su lengua y hablaba correctamente.
Jesús les mandó que a nadie se lo contaran. Pero cuanto
más se lo prohibía, tanto más ellos lo publicaban. Y se
maravillaban sobremanera y decían «Todo lo ha hecho
bien; hace oír a los sordos y hablar a los mudos.» Reflexión El Evangelio que acabamos de oír nos cuenta la
curación de un sordomudo. Pero en ese milagro no sólo debemos ver el hecho, sino también el mensaje que encierra.
¿Qué es lo que Jesús quiere manifestarnos, revelarnos por
este milagro? La única palabra que Jesús pronuncia en todo
el trozo es “effetá”, que quiere decir: “ábrete”. Jesús abre al
hombre. Hay muchas maneras de estar cerrado. Si un sentido está cerrado, como el oído o la vista, ya es algo tremendo. Pero si el hombre mismo está cerrado es mucho
peor. Los que ven los milagros de Jesús, están cerrados a su
significado. Ello hace suspirar al Señor, más que la triste
situación material del sordomudo. Los judíos lo combaten,
los discípulos no lo entienden, y los que se alegran de sus
milagros no pasan del asombro al seguimiento de Jesús. El
sordomudo personifica esa situación, y el milagro tiende a
la apertura total del hombre. En este contexto hay que ver la
promesa de Dios en la primera lectura de hoy (Isaías 35, 47). El profeta Isaías anuncia que la salvación definitiva llegará cuando los sordos oigan y los mudos hablen. Es el
anuncio del tiempo mesiánico. Pero a más de dos mil años
de la llegada del Mesías, nos encontramos con que seguimos sordos y mudos. Oímos, pero no escuchamos. Cada
uno entiende como le conviene. Cuando decimos dialogar,
estamos más atentos a lo que responderemos que en prestar
oídos a lo que se nos dice. Diálogos entre sordos son las

sordos son las relaciones de las generaciones: los mayores
no escuchan ni entienden a los jóvenes y viceversa. En el
seno de una misma familia los sordomudos se multiplican
más y más. A romper esa “sordomudez” nos llama Cristo
en el milagro que oímos en el Evangelio de hoy. El sordomudo personifica nuestra propia situación como
“sordos” y “mudos” frente a Dios y a los demás: desconectados, incomunicados, solitarios - en una palabra:
“cerrados”. Así Cristo viene hoy de nuevo y nos grita la
única palabra que pronunció en ese caso: ¡“effetá”,
ábranse! El sentido de la Encarnación es lograr una verdadera apertura. La salvación ha logrado su objetivo donde
nos tornamos hombres abiertos, atentos; hombres que saben escuchar. Porque el hombre, por naturaleza, está
llamado a ser abierto, a relacionarse con los demás,
comenzando con los que le están más próximos: los de su
casa, de su trabajo, de su barrio. Pero debe abrirse también
a Dios. Jesús mismo es y fue modelo perfecto de esa apertura en su doble dimensión. Él está abierto al Padre en la
meditación, la oración y, sobre todo, en una obediencia
que lo lleva hasta la cruz. Esa misma obediencia al Padre
lo lleva también a la apertura hacia los hombres. Su atención a los demás no tiene límites de horario, sobre todo
cuando se trata de los más pobres, enfermos y desgraciados. Queridos hermanos, pidamos, por eso, en esta Eucaristía de hoy la gracia de una apertura total hacia Dios y
hacia los demás. Que quien nos mire, vea a Cristo y se
alegre, porque ha llegado la salvación: “los ciegos ven, los
sordos oyen, los cojos saltan y los mudos cantan llenos de

Señor, Jesús, que tan agradablemente te encuentras
con la gente buena y sencilla que te sigue por doquier.
A nadie desoyes, ni relegas; a todos acoges y ayudas,
cuando hay sentimientos de humildad y generosidad.
Ayúdame, Señor, a ser siempre sincero para conocerme
como soy, y como Tu quieres que sea; para exigirme como
discípulo tuyo y servidor de todos, y para imitarte en esa
bondad y entrega al prójimo que te hacía tan atractivo y
grandioso, tan ejemplar y magnánimo.
Al contemplar a ese sordomudo que curaste milagrosamente, pienso, Señor, en tantas personas sordas y
mudas, en cuestiones de Religión, de santidad y de Amor
de Dios, y por tanto de generosidad y de auténtica caridad. Quizá nunca han oído hablar de Ti, de tu mensaje
liberador y trascendente, de la posibilidad de agrandar el
corazón para –desde tu Amor– amar la vida, el mundo, el
prójimo, la sociedad; y disfrutar con tu amor en la lucha
diaria por la santidad y el apostolado, y por hacer de la
vida un poema de amor y felicidad para uno mismo y para
los demás.

Para ellos te pido, Señor, el milagro de tu Palabra luminosa y de tu gracia santificadora, que les abra el corazón y
la mente a la Fe, a la Esperanza o Confianza en tu amor de
Padre, y a la Caridad y compromiso apostólico y solidario,
que solo desde tu Amor es posible, y hace verdaderamente
felices.
Que quienes tenemos ya la vocación cristiana, no solo la
valoremos como el mejor tesoro, sino que la vivamos con la
mayor alegría y generosidad, y la compartamos con todos
nuestros coetáneos.
Que también yo pueda, Señor, hacerme merecedor, como
Tú, del elogio más grandioso: Este cristiano todo lo ha intentado hacer bien.

Aplicando el gerundio

De pequeño aprendí a obedecer dócilmente a la voz “Caminando, ¡qué es
gerundio!” Cuando digo pequeño, es
que era pequeño. No pasaba de los seis
años probablemente, y ya sabía que
aquello significaba movimiento y acción, manos a la obra, sin demorar.
Como si una fuerza arrolladora se
hubiera puesto en marcha. Por lo que
quedarse parado y estancado suponía
un peligro. Sólo años después supe
qué significaba realmente aquella expresión. Y perdió gracia. ¡Claro que es gerundio! Pero gerundio no me decía nada. Estaba junto al infinitivo y al participio, y se distinguen en su forma estupendamente bien.
Nunca tuve problemas, ni los confundí. Ni siquiera cuando
se les llamaba perfectos. Aquel juego en clase de lengua,
que parecía entretener a la profesora, no tenía ningún misterio. Al menos entonces.
A día de hoy prefiero, con conocimiento ya, el gerundio
para mochas más cosas. Ahora comprendo que se puede
generalizar, y se debe generalizar, en diversas ocasiones.
¿Cómo se sale de la crisis? Saliendo. ¿Cómo se juega al
fútbol? Jugando. ¿Cómo se aprueban los exámenes?
Estudiando. ¿Cómo se crea un blog? Escribiendo. ¿Cómo
conoceré el amor? Amando. Y así sucesivamente. Tantas
veces como quieras, y para todas las preguntas parece existir una respuesta en gerundio. El infinitivo es demasiado
arisco y contundente, incapaz de dialogar. Se esconde

incluso en las perífrasis obligando y mandando. El participio adjetiva, da por hechas (para muestra un botón) las
cosas antes de haber terminado, y tiene algo de olgazán
porque nunca lleva la batuta. Sin embargo el gerundio imprime carácter, moldea situaciones, es aventurero. Tiene
un punto importante de servicio, capaz de invertir las
situaciones. Me gustan los gerundios. Los presentes se
quedan sosos, aunque sean primos hermanos. El caso es
que con gerundio se construyen además frases de
perogrullo que portan grandes verdades. No se pueden
decir de mejor modo, así que se repiten. Vienen a confirmar dónde está la clave, pero llaman a la acción y les dan
vida. Por otro lado, para explicar un buen gerundio reclamas la atención de otras muchas palabras grandes. No
puede ser de otra manera. El gerundio es difícil de explicar, a palo seco, cuando no hay vitalidad, ingenio, transformación, crecimiento. Y no se puede confundir con la
pasividad, la mera recepción, la buena disposición a acoger y soportar; implica al sujeto. No hay acción fuera del
sujeto cuando utilizamos un buen gerundio contundente.
Hoy he encontrado este solemne párrafo, que comparto
con vosotros, para que comprobéis con un ejemplo que no
se pueden decir de mejor modo las cosas que a través de
los gerundios:
"La fe sólo crece y se fortalece creyendo; no hay otra
posibilidad para poseer la certeza sobre la propia vida
que abandonarse, en un in crescendo continuo, en las
manos de un amor que se experimenta siempre como más
grande porque tiene su origen en Dios." (Porta Fidei, 7)

¿Cómo orar cuando alguien te hace sufrir?

Hay personas que nos hacen sufrir.
Sabiéndolo o no, queriéndolo o no,
pero nos hacen pasar malos ratos.
Nos duelen sus palabras hirientes,
sus actitudes humillantes, sus tratos
despóticos, su falta de responsabilidad, sus infidelidades, sus prontos
temperamentales, sus olvidos y
negligencias…
Ante personas así podemos reaccionar siendo con ellos de
la misma manera que sonellos con nosotros: "para que se
enteren", "para que vean lo que se siente". O bien podemos enfrentarlos, decirles sus verdades y ponerles un
alto. O incluso evadir el problema ignorándolo y dejándolo

a su suerte. Pero sabemos que estos recursos pocas veces funcionan.
Padre de bondad, Padre de amor, te bendigo, te alabo y te doy
gracias porque por amor nos diste a Jesús.
Sin embargo, podemos también buscar el momento y las palabras
más adecuadas para hacerle ver lo que está sucediendo. Podemos
poner amor: "Donde no hay amor, pon amor y encontrarás
amor" (San Juan de la Cruz). Y por fin, orar por ellos.
Orar por una persona querida es fácil, pero orar por una persona
que te hace daño es difícil. Apenas lo traes a la memoria en la
oración y se te retuerce el estómago. Y si llegas a formular una
oración, lo más probable es que ésta sea para pedirle a Dios que
lo parta un rayo, que le dé una buena lección o que lo cree de
nuevo. Aún si te salen estos sentimientos, intenta de nuevo. Verás
que la oración irá ablandando tu corazón, pues en la oración se
hace presente el Espíritu de Dios que es amor, y Él, el Amor en
persona, irá renovando tu corazón. Y te dirás: "pero de lo que se
trataba era de que el otro cambiara". Sí, pero al orar por quien te
hace sufrir te darás cuenta de que el primero que comienza a cambiar eres tú mismo.
Gracias Padre porque a la luz de tu Espíritu
comprendemos que él es la luz, la verdad y el buen pastor, que
ha venido para que tengamos vida y la tengamos en abundancia.
Al rezar por quienes te hacen sufrir:
- Te das la oportunidad de desahogarte y de hacerlo con quien es
todopoderoso y puede remediar las cosas. Desahogarse con Dios
sana y libera. Poner en manos de Dios aquello que no puedes controlar ni remediar es de personas sensatas.
- Dios te hace ver que el rencor, la venganza, la falta de perdón, el
resentimiento, el odio, no son virtudes cristianas, y que más bien
debes aprender a ser como es Dios con nosotros: rico en misericordia, dispuesto aperdonarme siempre (aunque no lo merezca),
tolerante, paciente, compasivo. “Perdónales, Padre, porque no
saben lo que hacen” (Lc 23, 34) “Hoy estarás conmigo en el
Paraíso”. (Lc 23, 43)
- Rezas con coherencia y sinceridad el padrenuestro y le das a tu
Padre celestial excusa suficiente para perdonarte. “Perdónanos
nuestras ofensas como también nosotros perdonamos a los que
nos ofenden”.
- El Espíritu Santo comienza a modelar tu corazón conforme al
Suyo. Verás que todo ese rencor que llevas dentro es veneno que
intoxica, vinagre que amarga la vida, y que a medida que te purificas de él y lo suples con la miel de la caridad cristiana, la vida
se te hace mucho más llevadera. Ya bastante mal te lo pasas con
el sufrimiento que el otro te impone como para que lo amplifiques
con el reflujo de tu propia amargura.
Y no te quede la menor duda de que si rezas con fe y caridad por
quienes tehacen sufrir, Dios actuará. No esperes resultados inmediatos, simplemente espera con absoluta confianza en que Dios
obrará en el momento y de la manera que considere oportunas.
Tal vez te pueda servir esta oración de intercesión y sanación del
P. Emiliano Tardif:
Hoy, Padre, quiero presentarte a este hijo(a). Tú lo(a) conoces
por su nombre. Te lo(a) presento, Señor, para que Tú pongas tus
ojos de Padre amoroso en su vida.
Tú conoces su corazón y conoces las heridas de su historia.
Tú conoces todo lo que él ha querido hacer y no ha hecho.
Conoces también lo que hizo o le hicieron lastimándolo.
Tú conoces sus limitaciones, errores y su pecado.
Conoces los traumas y complejos de su vida.
Hoy, Padre, te pedimos que por el amor que le tienes a tu Hijo,
Jesucristo,derrames tu Santo Espíritu sobre este hermano(a)
para que el calor de tu amor sanador, penetre en lo más íntimo
de su corazón.
Tú que sanas los corazones destrozados y vendas las heridas,
sana a este hermano, Padre.
Entra en ese corazón, Señor Jesús, como entraste en aquella
casa donde estaban tus discípulos llenos de miedo. Tú te apareciste en medio de ellos y les dijiste: "paz a vosotros". Entra en
este corazón y dale tu paz. Llénalo de amor.
Sabemos que el amor echa fuera el temor.
Pasa por su vida y sana su corazón.
Sabemos, Señor, que Tú lo haces siempre que te lo pedimos, y te
lo estamos pidiendo con María, nuestra madre, la que estaba en
las bodas de Caná cuando no había vino y Tú respondiste a su
deseo, transformando el agua en vino.
Cambia su corazón y dale un corazón generoso, un corazón
afable, un corazón bondadoso, dale un corazón nuevo.
Haz brotar, Señor, en este hermano(a) los frutos de tu presencia. Dale el fruto de tu Espíritu que es el amor, la paz y la alegría. Haz que venga sobre él el Espíritu de las bienaventuranzas, para que él pueda saborear y buscar a Dios cada día viviendo sin complejos ni traumas junto a su esposo(a), junto a su
familia, junto a sus hermanos.
Te doy gracias, Padre, por lo que estás haciendo hoy en su vida.
Te damos gracias de todo corazón porque Tú nos sanas, porque
tu nos liberas, porque Tú rompes las cadenas y nos das la libertad.
Gracias, Señor, porque somos templos de tu Espíritu y ese templo no se puede destruir porque es la Casa de Dios. Te damos
gracias, Señor, por la fe. Gracias por el amor que has puesto en
nuestros corazones.
¡Qué grande eres Señor!
