EFC – Sunday, August 3, 2014 – God loves 2: “His and hers” footprints We’re continuing to try to make the EFC Facebook page more helpful and more widely used…and working on it this week, I learned something new that really caught me by surprise! When you create or update your Facebook page, there are over 50 choicesi when you get to the part about “gender.” I learned that shortly after coming across a news story out of my hometown on the Canadian prairies…where a mom with a six-year-old child is in a legal fight to have gender removed from birth certificates. Soon after her son started crawling, she says she began to notice he seemed unusually unhappy – and she says it was much worse by the time he turned two. The Mom says that changed when he started playing with girls – and wearing their dresses…and playing with their dolls. The mother says he was visibly happy…and she decided he really wasn’t a boy…but a girl in a boy’s body. She says he has been much happier since they started treating him like a “her.” Now the mom is in a public awareness campaign and lawsuit to keep “gender” off birth certificates. She said: “I think it's premature to identify a gender for someone (in infancy)…who are we to say what a person's gender is?”ii Her question set off a wide variety of emotions in me – especially knowing where we are in our series…in the Creation account where Moses wrote “male and female (God) created them.” (Gen 1:27) We’re continuing to explore the foundations of this church…looking at what is at “our core.” So far we have seen: God is; God speaks; God makes; and, as we saw last week: God loves! We have seen all of that in the opening lines of Genesis. God’s love is all through the general summary of Chapter 1. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on humans -- designed to experience God’s love in a way no other “creature” can. There is more love than we can imagine behind the verse we’re focusing on today: “male and female God created them.” (Gen 1:27) That was when God’s evaluation of Creation was upgraded -- from “good”iii to “very,” or more fully “extremely good” (Gen 1:31) EFC - Domingo, 03 de agosto 2014 - Dios ama II: huellas “De él y de ella” Seguimos para tratar de hacer la página EFC Facebook de más ayuda y más ampliamente utilizada... y trabajando en la misma semana, he aprendido algo nuevo que realmente me tomó por sorpresa! I wonder what God might think of almost five dozen “gender options”… and how He might feel about a growing wave of people questioning and altering their gender. Last week we saw male and female were created in God’s image. In God’s eyes, that was “exctremely good.” (Gen 1:31) That means it is very good to be male; it is very good to be female. Male and female are equal in value and worth. Whenever I slow down and really think about that, I get convicted by subtle distortions in the way males are tempted to think – from the time we’re just little boys. I would encourage (or challenge) my fellow men (and boys) to join me in daring to ask ourselves: “Is there anything that has impacted me in any way that leads me to think I am more important than any female – simply because I am male? Am I ever tempted to think females (or at least images of them) are “there for me” – for my enjoyment… beyond what is healthy or pure?” I believe answering that honestly can be trickier than most of us realize – or admit. Think about the images that surround and bombard us almost everywhere we turn! Decades after what may have been the most publicized “women’s lib” or “women’s rights” movement in history, it at least seems as though women are used and seen as objects more than ever! Girls and ladies: has anything impacted you in any way that tricks you into believing you are less valuable or matter less because you are a female… or that your “value” is tied to a constantly shifting standard of beauty? Male dominance or any attitude of superiority, or any mistreatment of women in any way is against God’s desire – and design! Getting back to that design, the first negative observation out of Creation was when God said it was “not good” (2:18) for Adam to be alone. 3 The original language implied the “definite article the”…as in, “It is not good for the man to be alone…” God was not saying it is “bad” to be alone from time to time (Jesus often went out of His way to get alone!). Paul said, “I wish everyone were single, just as I am.” (1 Cor 7:7, NLT) He was not thinking about night clubs or scenes from “Friends.” He was thinking of being able to minister in ways married people can’t. Single people should not be made to feel as though they are missing out on something or are somehow lower in God’s design because of their singleness. When God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone,” he was talking about Adam…at that point in Creation. That could seem weird because Adam was surrounded by everything that made up an indescribable Creation…so he was far from “alone.” Way beyond that, Adam was “with” God in a way we cannot comprehend because sin had not invaded Creation yet. But I checked 20 different English versions of The Bible…and they all use the same word: alone. So how was Adam alone… and what wasn’t right about it? Part of the challenge comes from the word for “good.” It was extremely common – and meant all kinds of things. After wrestling with this verse for years and digging into it deeper than ever this week, I have come to believe “good” here meant more like “best” or “in its absolute fullness or completion.” In that sense, I believe God was saying something like, “Ohhhhh, this is so good…and I just have one more thing to do. You are not going to believe it!” Moses’ report continues: “…there was no helper just right for (Adam). So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. (Gen 2:20-22, NLT) One word in there often confuses things: helper. The first time I saw that about 25 years ago, the image that came to mind was me as a boy “helping” my dad work on a car or something – which basically meant holding a wrench in case he asked for it. No vas a creerlo! 4 The word God used and what it referred to was never designed to be a demeaning or secondclass role. The word that was there appears in The Bible most often referring to God…almost always almost dealing with Him helping or even rescuing us! If anything, God creating and bringing her to Adam showed something was lacking in him! There are a lot of things I need when it comes to true spiritual growth…and God’s design for me means I need Beth’s help in many of them. Because of our marriage covenant, she is a unique instrument God uses in my transformation. I believe we need to see that as much as ever in God’s design – with Creation leading up to God making “male and female” human beings (Gen 1:27). At that crucial point in Creation, God did not make another man. If Christ-ians are going have conversations about what is one of, if not the most controversial topics today, we need to know the Creation story – and believe it. I’m not talking about debating whether it happened 10 thousand or 10 million years ago. I’m talking about knowing and having confidence in the careful intentional design. As people find out I am a Pastor, I often get comments like “you’re against homosexuality, right?” As I have mentioned before, I’ve learned to answer with something like, “Actually, I am in for “Designer” sex” – and while they’re still kind of lost for words, I keep going with Who I believe The Designer is and how I believe He designed things…and why! I often try to get people to talk about things medically or even scientifically rather than biblically – and to neutrally consider the way “body parts” are designed to work. I believe if they are being completely honest they would have to admit, “That is the way ‘this’ is really designed to work.” Sometimes I talk about “nerve endings” and even pieces of “the design” that are lovingly included, to bring pleasure no other creature experiences! However, it is about much more than “certain body parts.” Just like each of us, when God created Adam and Eve, they were made up of 100 trillion cells…and each of those cells are made up of what two scientists discovered just 60 years ago – known as DNA. That is how far into the design the distinctions between male and female go! Operations that “change body parts” and add new hormones will not change the core of the design. That is why people like Walt Heyer went through “gender reassignment surgery” -- only to discover the inner turmoil that pushed him to the surgery in the first place was still there…and he has learned a staggering 30% of the people who go through gender surgery end up committing suicide. There is a powerful force that is intensely opposed to people like Walter Heyer and his decision to “switch back” to being a man…and he is experiencing hatred from the same people who came around him and cheered for him as he went through the first surgery.iv He is being criticized for writing things like, “There are thousands of others like me, who underwent the surgery only to discover it did not help. The only results from the surgery were some cosmetic changes… I still suffered from psychological issues which needed to be properly diagnosed and treated. I turned to Jesus Christ, who surrounded me with His loving people. Through their unconditional love, I finally received treatment for dissociative disorder and now I am restored as a father, husband and man.” In a lesson he did on this subject, Pastor JD Greear referred to a study that was done, where researchers put obstacles in front of a variety of boys and girls learning to crawl and walk. Boys were far more inclined to knock them over; girls were far more inclined to go around them -- or stop in front of them and cry. Greear posed the question: “which is better?” Society needs both, in a healthy balance…although there can be an unhealthy way to see that kind of an experiment. I was a boy who was inclined to cry rather than demolish. In a farming-dominated culture (and with the kind of “man” my Dad is), I grew up with a loud “inner voice” telling me “big boys don’t cry.” I learned to suppress a significant part of who I am emotionally…and I learned to hit – hard! To this day, even though I know The Bible says it is okay for men to cry, parts of me still don’t believe that – and I occasionally suffer from “emotional constipation” as something in me tells me to hold back tears! The truth is, in God’s design there are boys who are more inclined to cry about rather than destroy obstacles and there are girls who are more inclined to send Eso es cuan lejos en el diseño de las distinciones entre varón y mujer van! Just because I am more inclined to cry, nobody can convince me I need to change body parts. While I’m talking about that, I need to add something crucial – although I struggled to find the most “family friendly” way to word it. As risky as it may be, it is so crucial I believe I should try. Size of biceps or “six-pack abs” are rotten ways to measure “manliness” – and so is frequency males use their “anatomy” sexually. Besides, contrary to a cultural myth, sex is far more than simply physical. If sex were purely (or even mostly) physical: Why is it so exceptionally hard to deal with sexual abuse? Why is rape recovery much more complex and profound than healing from being beaten? Why are women so much less likely to report rape than physical abuse? When someone’s spouse commits adultery, why is it so uniquely hard for him or her to deal with? Why are our deepest regrets so often sexual? dispersar los obstáculos.. In ways scientists and doctors are just beginning to understand and measure, sex involves the trillions of cells in the body…and then some! Sex is much more than biology; it reaches the depths of the soul! Paul tried to show that by using an illustration of the lowest form of sex in his culture; 2,000 years ago, he knew there was something far deeper than something purely physical going on: “do you not know and realize that when a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one with her?” (1 Cor 6:16) One of the scariest books I’ve found is titled: “Hooked: New Science on How Casual Sex is Affecting Our Children.” It came out of extensive study by a couple of brain scientists. Using some of the newest technology, they found how having multiple sex partners affects the brain – especially when you’re young. It actually re-wires the brain in a way that makes healthy relationships much more difficult. This is just one example of why I find this book so scary: “The individual who goes from sex partner to sex partner is causing his or her brain to mold in such a way that eventually accepts that sexual pattern as normal… The pattern of changing sex partners therefore seems to damage their ability to bond in a committed relationship…. In direct contrast, Pastor Tim Keller says: “Sex is for fully committed relationships because it is to be a foretaste of the joy that comes from being in complete union with God. The most rapturous love between a man and a woman is only a hint of God’s love for us.” As much as I appreciate something called the “True Love Waits” movement, females of all ages need to realize while there is immeasurable value in waiting on sex, you don’t have to wait for the truest form of love. The greatest love ever is here right now! This is a very appropriate place to mention the redeeming, healing, restoring power and ability of God…in any area of our lives – of any part of our past…or present! I also hope the past few minutes might be enough to help you see why God’s desire (and design) is for purity before and outside of marriage! Once again, by God’s design, there are differences between male and female that were never intended to increase or decrease either’s value or importance! There are roles and responsibilities in God’s design primarily intended for females… and roles and responsibilities primarily for males. One of the things that hit me as I studied this is that man was created first! (Gen 2:7-8) Wouldn’t making them both from the same pile of dust at the same time have shown “equality” more clearly? I believe in God’s mind, the matter of “equality” or “value” could not have stated more clearly than, “He created them…in His image!” (Gen 1:27) So if it wasn’t about equality, was there something else God wanted to show through the order of things? Let’s look a little more closely at the order: God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. (Gen 2:21-22, NLT) That underlines Adam was made first; he was given the first specific roles and rules. Before the creation of Eve, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden to work it and take care of it.” (Gen 2:15, NVI) Muchas personas no se dan cuenta de que había trabajo en el Edén antes de "la caída" - incluso antes de Eva! 8 Worshiping God as he worked came naturally to Adam in Eden; backing up to last week, Adam reflected God’s image through his work! Doing that naturally was lost when sin came into the story – and helping us return to an attitude of worship in our work is one of the supernatural ministries of The Holy Spirit. God created them so it’s not like He needed help naming “all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air” (Gen 2:19). However, God gave the responsibility of naming them to Adam…and he also named Eve (Gen 3:20). I believe that was an extension (or illustration) of his unique responsibilities! Before she was created, God told Adam, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat…” (Gen. 2:16-17) There is no record of God saying that to Eve. I believe a key part of Adam’s responsibility was to help her see God’s design. That is part of a unique spiritual responsibility I see in the Creation design. Adam had the responsibility and privilege of leading Eve in her understanding about God…although that can be uniquely challenging in the year 2014. Many wives knows more about The Bible than their husbands. I don’t believe a woman should feel badly about that…or about having a unique ability (a gift) to teach. However, I believe a unique responsibility remains for men in this area…and I didn’t find it until I began to explore the language of the Old Testament. In the phrase “male and female he created them” (Gen 1:27), there seems to have been a nuance in the word that was used for “male.” The word was also used for “remember!” After wrestling with the language for quite a while, I was left with a strong sense that part of the unique responsibility is to be exemplary in the way we husbands remember. I’m not talking about remembering where we put our keys or even the date of our anniversary – but remembering God! Another unique responsibility I see in the Creation design has been reformed significantly over the past century in what are called “developed nations” – and I understand a tension that comes with it. When we were first married in California, Beth brought home her first paycheck for part-time work as a nurse. It was well over double the biggest check I had ever received as a full-time radio announcer! 9 So I’m not saying only men can, as we used to say, “Bring home the bacon.” However, I believe one of my responsibilities is to be an example in the way I approach work…and that is tied to learning to find joy in work! Even if a husband is unemployed, he can live out this responsibility by working at home or in the neighborhood! As self-convicting as it is, I believe, by God’s design, you can tell a lot about a man by the way he approaches work. The Creation design also included a unique responsibility for the man in the way he models the place he puts his wife in all other relationships – including ones that were most important before marriage. This could not have applied to Adam and Eve – but it was projected ahead to all future couples that wanted to follow God’s design for marriage (and it was repeated firmly by Jesus): “a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife…” (Gen 2:24, NIV, Mt 19:5; Mk 10:7-8) That is spoken specifically about the man! After 14 years with the privilege of seeing into marriages in Latin America, I believe the part about the man leaving his mother is one of the biggest challenges for couples -- particularly Mom’s influence and her place as “the most important woman in his life.” The other part of that “holding fast to (our) wives.” The verb that was originally there was typically used with glue or cement. This hits close to home – and it stings! It means I am to take the primary initiative in order for Beth and me to continue to come closer together. That is hard for many men. We are constantly tempted to stop fighting for our wives once they become our wives. Texas Pastor Tony Evans says one of the best things we can do is to continue to see and treat our wives the way we did when we first met – and we were afraid they didn’t like us…yet getting us to abandon our roles and responsibilities is one of Satan’s oldest and most effective tricks! We’ve looked at this before – and I believe it is one of the most important things we (men) need to remember: “(Eve) took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. (Gen 3:6, NLT) The line “her husband, who was with her” terrifies me! The Bible says “it was not Adam who was deceived by Satan. 10 The woman was deceived, and sin was the result.” (1 Tim. 2:14) Before Eve’s teeth touched the fruit, the first sin was Adam refusing his core responsibility. Before she sinned by what she did, he sinned by what he didn’t do! As we continue in the story we find more evidence of how God held Adam responsible: The LORD God called to the man, “Where are you (singular)?” He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.” “Who told you that you (singular) were naked?” the LORD God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you (singular) not to eat?” (Gen. 3:9-11, NLT) God went to Adam, not her, even thought she ate first! God had given him a specific responsibility for her; so he had primary responsibility for what happened. Adam went from silent and wimpy to defensive and even lashing out – at God, in this case: “It was the woman you gave me…” (Gen 3:12). “It wasn’t my fault! Actually, You were the one who made her!” One of the worst things men inherited from Adam is a tendency to either be too silent, withdrawn or wimpy or to lash out irrationally. We find the results of that in Genesis 3. A statement God made will keep echoing until the end of this world as we know it: “Cursed is the ground…” (Gen 3:17). God was not cursing the ground. The original language shows He was stating a fact: “Because of what you have done, the design is messed up.” As a result, God told Eve, “You will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.” (Gen 3:16) After digging into this as deeply as I could, I came out with a strong sense that God was saying, “Sin turned the design upside-down. Now, one of the core struggles you will have is from the distortion of your roles. Ladies, I believe God was saying you were designed to long for a husband’s leadership, but between Eden and Heaven your natural inclination will be to resist it; you will even have to learn to fight an unhealthy desire to control him. Because of what I just mentioned we inherited from Adam-- and from what God said to him, we often give you good reasons for that! 11 God told Adam, “Instead of My design for leadership in your marriage, you will be inclined to rule over her… often harshly and without the tenderness I designed and she desires and needs. You will often try to rule in ways that will make her not want to follow!” " However, God did not say, “Well, that is just the way things are now; learn to live with it!” God sent Jesus to call and show His followers to take stands against “how things are” between Eden and Heaven – and then God released Holy Spirit to help us learn (and occasionally re-learn) how He has designed things – and how to truly live in pursuit of them.
