A message from
Erandi’s Braids
Your child will now be reading “Erandi’s Braids.” This selection is the story of
Erandi’s sacrifice for her family. Erandi is a little girl living in Mexico. Her mother
needs to buy a new fishing net to catch fish, but their family does not have money to
spare. One day, Erandi’s mother goes to a barber’s shop and asks him to cut her long
hair and buy it for money. The barber tells the mother that her hair is not long enough.
Erandi’s mother turns to leave, but Erandi knows that her family needs the net very
badly. So, without knowing if her hair will ever grow back, Erandi asks the barber to
cut her own hair.
Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices for your loved ones or for the things you
really want. After your child has finished reading “Erandi’s Braids,” you may want
to help him or her write about any three brave people in the world who have made
sacrifices for good causes. An example has been completed for you.

Erandi’s Braids
Ahora su hijo(a) leerá “Erandi’s Braids”. Esta selección trata del sacrificio de
Erandi por su familia. Erandi es una niña que vive en México. Su madre necesita
comprar una nueva red para pescar peces, pero su familia no tiene dinero para
comprarla. Un día, la madre de Erandi va a la peluquería para que le corten el pelo
y que se lo compren. El barbero dice a la madre que el pelo no es lo suficientemente
largo. La madre se da la vuelta para marcharse, pero Erandi sabe que su familia tiene
mucha necesidad de obtener la red. De este modo, sin saber si su pelo alguna vez
volverá a crecer, Erandi le pide al barbero que le corte su propio pelo.
En algunas ocasiones, tenemos que hacer sacrificios para los seres queridos o para
las cosas que realmente queremos. Cuando su hijo(a) haya terminado de leer “Erandi’s
Braids”, usted quizás quiera ayudarlo(a) a escribir sobre tres personas valientes que en el
mundo han realizado sacrificios por buenas causas. A continuación se ofrece un ejemplo.
