Those using envelopes will continue receiving them. Whoever is not consistent in supporting the Church will stop receiving them by us placing them on an inactive list. It is too costly to send envelopes that are not being used. You are also able to support Corpus Christi electronically now. If you are interested in this type of giving, please let us know. A few parishioners choose to do this and our weekly income through regular collections is a few hundred dollars higher each week. Thank you! We respectfully request that you place the amount of your contribution on your envelope. And please do not use scotch tape. If you use your own envelope, and not the one sent to you, please be sure to include a return address. We cannot post entries in our computer system without your name and address. As always on this last Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. The readings remind us of God's faithfulness to us as he promises to shepherd the people of Israel. In Luke's Gospel we are taken to the crucifixion and Jesus being mocked as “King of the Jews.” The man crucified next to him asks Jesus to remember him when he gets into his Kingdom. Jesus replies, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Catholics For Freedom Of Religion "I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wondrous deeds." Psalm 9:1 Let us give thanks for America's freedom of religion, even as we must now work to preserve it. Thanksgiving Thoughts: 1621 - Grateful Pilgrims reaped a bountiful harvest the summer following the deaths of nearly half their people during their first winter in New England. The threeday feast was to thank God and to celebrate with their helpful Indian friends. 1777 - First National Proclamation of Thanks by Continental Congress: "... it is the Duty of all Men to adore the ... Providence of the Almighty; to acknowledge with Gratitude their Obligation to Him for Benefits received ..." 1789 - President George Washington proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving to thank God for giving the American people the opportunity to create a Constitution to preserve their hard won freedoms. 1863 - During the Civil War, President Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," making Thanksgiving an official federal holiday. Thanksgiving Prayer: Gracious God, we give you thanks for your generosity to us, for leading our ancestors to this land and for our many freedoms. Please preserve and protect the rights of conscience which underlie our Freedom of Religion that we may do your work according to your will. Amen Monday is the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Tuesday is the Memorial of Saint Cecilia, virgin and martyr. Thursday is the Memorial of Saint Andrew Dũng-Lac, priest and martyr, and his companions, martyrs. The US on Thursday celebrates Thanksgiving Day. The first reading all week is continues from the mystical Book of Revelation. In this last week of Ordinary Time, we have readings from Luke's Gospel, which grow more explicit about the end time as Jesus and his disciples draw closer to Jerusalem. Jesus watches rich people make donations at the Temple but when a poor widow drops in two small coins he notes that her donation is far larger for "she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood." He speaks of the end time, and cautions that many will claim to come in Jesus' name. "Do not follow them!" He says that the cost of following him may be high, and may lead to trials and divisions in families. But, he says, "By your perseverance you will secure your lives." In a dramatic look at the end time, Jesus says, "And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory." Just as we know what the signs in nature tell us - fig trees in bloom announce the coming of summer - Jesus want us to be aware of the signs of the coming of the Kingdom: "when you see these things happening, know that the Kingdom of God is near." Finally, he tells us not to let our "hearts be drowsy" from drunkenness or anxiety but to be vigilant at all times and to pray for the strength we will need for the "tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.” The First Sunday of Advent begins a new liturgical year and the beginning of a season filled with the riches of our scripture readings. For the next few weeks, the main focus will be on the first reading, with the gospel chosen to accompany it. Isaiah offers the people of God a promise of peace: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks." Matthew's gospel is the story of Noah and a caution from Jesus to prepare "for an hour you do not expect." 416 – Corpus Christi – Page 3 Christ the King Corpus Christi Church Mass of Thanksgiving Please join us on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday November 24 at 9:00 AM for our concelebrated parish Thanksgiving Mass. If you are considering donating food for our food pantry and bringing it with you to Mass, the food will be brought to the altar during the Offertory procession. Thank you for your generosity to those who need assistance with feeding their families this holiday season. PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRIES THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE Please help feed the hungry of our parish. Bendito o reino do nosso pai David.
