Halloween, or All Hallow’s Eve, may have originated from a Celtic festival which marked the
beginning of winter. This was the time of the year when people believed that spirits or fairies, and the
souls of the dead came into our world and were appeased with offerings of food and drink. Trick-ortreating may have evolved from people impersonating the spirits to receive offerings on their behalf.
Jack-o’-lanterns were traditionally carried on All Hallows’ Eve in order to frighten evil spirits away.

Little trick-or-treaters should go with an adult, older kids stay in groups and familiar areas
•
Keep trick-or-treaters on sidewalks, cross streets at corners, look both ways
•
Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, and no headphones
•
Have kids carry flashlights, add glow sticks or reflective tape
to their costumes
•
Drivers - slow down and be especially alert in residential
areas, treating hours are 5:30-9:30 p.m.

On November 1, if you haven’t had enough yet, you can dress up and celebrate the Spanish traditions
of Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) which focuses on remembering friends and family who
have died, supporting their spiritual journey, and of course eating a lot more sweets!

Y tienen su Halloween ... Lleno de diversión de la noche. ~ De Víspera de Robert Burn’s (1785)
Halloween, o la Víspera de Todos los Santos, pueden tener su origen en un festival celta que marcó
el comienzo del invierno. Esta fue la época del año cuando la gente creía que los espíritus o las hadas,
y las almas de los muertos llegaron a nuestro mundo y fueron apaciguados con ofrendas de comida
y bebida. Trick-or-treating pueden haber evolucionado a partir de la gente haciéndose pasar por los
espíritus para recibir ofertas en su nombre. Jack-o’-linternas fueron realizadas tradicionalmente en la
víspera de Todos los Santos con el fin de asustar a los malos espíritus.
