José Luis Estellés enjoys an outstanding career, in which he combines his
orchestral conducting, soloist and pedagogy activity with a rare equal
strength. As a clarinet soloist he has performed in Europe, USA, Mexico
and Japan, and has​ recorded for labels

Artistic Director of Musikene, where he teaches clarinet
since its creation, and is very much sought after to give
masterclasses all over the world. He has been a jury member at
competitions Musikwettwerb ARD (Munich) and Aeolus
Bläserwettbewerb (Dusseldorf). In 2007 he was Artistic Director of
Cameralia - International Academy and Festival Chamber Music of
Galicia. Solo clarinettist of the City Orchestra of Granada since
1991, he has worked with other Spanish orchestras, as well as in
England, Belgium and Germany.
José Luis Estellés has extended his experience as a performer to
orchestral conducting. In the beginning he worked closely with
many Spanish Youth Orchestras orchestras and since its public
debut in year 2000 with the Youth Orchestra of Andalucía he has
performed in Spain, Belgium, France, England, Bulgaria and
Mexico. His conducting spans the symphonic genre, the opera and today’s music, paying special
attention to both the new and neglected Spanish repertoire.
He was Artistic Director of TAiMAgranada (2002-2008), working closely with soloists such as
Katharina Rikus, Juan Manuel Lumbreras or José Ferrero. From 2004 he collaborated with the
National Academy of Contemporary Music with the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya, the
Symphony Orchestra of the CS de les Balears and the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra.
In 2008 he was the musical director of Weill’s opera "Die Sieben Todsünden", with the National
Youth Orchestra of Spain, Mary Carewe and Tenebrae Vocal Soloists and later with Orquesta
Barcelona 216 and Ute Lemper. He subsequently conducted the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada,
Academy AAEEMM of Santiago, the London Sinfonietta (working with Sir Harrison Birtwistle and
soprano Elisabeth Atherton), the National Youth Orchestra of Spain, Extremadura Symphony
Orchestra, Navarra Symphony Orchestra, Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra and Ensemble
Instrumenta Oaxaca in México. In his role as soloist-conductor, he has performed with the
Orchestra of Extremadura, TAiMAgranada, Utopia Chamber Orchestra, I Solisti di Perugia and The
Soloists of London.
José Luis Estellés was Director of Orchestral Studies Musikene (2003-2009), and launched in 2009
the world premiere (Kursaal, Auditorio Nacional) and recording of Pablo Sorozábal’s only opera,
“Juan Jose”, with Manuel Lanza and Ana Maria Sánchez in the main roles. ('Recording of great
historical significance' - CD Compact). In addition, he has recorded five CDs, including world first
recordings of works by Guridi, de Pablo, Lazkano, Edler, Bordes and Revueltas, as well as works
by Mozart, Arriaga and Brahms / Schoenberg. It has also made ​ ​ the DVD recording of 'Introitus',
Sofia Gubaidulina.

José-Luis Estellés has premiered works by
composers Ramón Lazkano, Alfons Conde, Juan
Cruz Guevara, Jorge Fernández Guerra, José
García Román, Tomás Garrido, Simon Holt,
Hideki Kozakura, Francisco Lara, Nuria Núñez,
Luis de Pablo, Pablo Sorozábal and Mercedes
Zavala, and has given first performances in
Spain of works by Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Sofia
Gubaidulina, Simon Holt, Hans Werner Henze,
Xenakis, Torres Maldonado, Magnus Lindberg,
Kats-Chernin and Davies. He conducted also the
premiere of Adsum, historic first public
performance of a symphonic work completely
generated by a computer program, the Computer Iamus.
During the year 2014 he has his debut as a conductor at Granada’s International Festival of Music
and Dance of Granada (JONDE, Schuberts Winterreise), in addition to other concerts with the
Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Contemporary Ensemble Salamanca, Extremadura Symphony
Orchestra and Codarts Wind Ensemble (Rotterdam), and will make a recording for the collection
'Spanish and Latin American Music' with Verso-Fundación BBVA label.
