People and places vulernable to flooding and sea level rise

More people will be exposed to flooding
THE QUESTION. Communities with limited resources experience greater losses when disasters like hurricanes and flooding occur. In the past we have seen people:
• without cars unable to evacuate, or forced to seek shelter in unsafe places
• with cars forced to flee far from home, sacrificing community ties and employment
• with limited resources have a more difficult time receiving aid
THE PROCESS. Key characteristics of the people living along the Sims Bayou
were assessed, using census data. We compared people living in the floodplain
to those living outside the floodplain. Then, using the future sea level rise estimates, we predicted areas that will experience flooding in the future.

WHY IT MATTERS. If we know future flood locations we can find ways to prevent harmful effects. Communities that understand how and why they are vulnerable can work with leaders to seek policy changes and
to send resources to areas that need it.

LA PREGUNTA. Las comunidades con recursos limitados sufren mayores pérdidas cuando ocurren disastres, tales como los huracanes. En el pasado hemos visto gente que:
• Sin carro no pueden evacuar, o son forzados a buscar abrigo en lugares inseguros
• Con carros son forzados a huir lejos de sus hogares, sacrificando enlaces comunitarios y empleos
• Con recursos limitados tienen mas dificultades en recibir ayuda
RESPUESTASO.
• Actualmente, 9% de la población de la cuenca de Sims vive dentro de la zona de inundación
• Para el 2050, este número aumentará a 10% por el aumento en el nivel del mar
• Para el 2100, otro 22% más serán expuestos a inundaciones debido al aumento del nivel del mar
PORQUÉ IMPORTA. ISi sabemos las ubicaciones de inundación, podremos encontrar maneras de prevenir
sus efectos dañinos. Las comunidades que entienden cómo y porqué son vulnerables pueden trabajar con
líderes para procurar cambios en politicas y mandar los recursos a las areas que los necesitan.
PEOPLE & PLACES
EL PROCESO. Evaluamos diferentes características claves de la gente viviendo
a lo largo del arroyo Sims usando información del Censo. Comparamos a la
gente que vive dentro de la zona de inundación con aquellos que viven fuera
de la zona de inundación. Después, usando estimados del aumento en el nivel
del mar en el futuro, predijimos qué áreas sufrirían de inundaciones en el
futuro.
