Atrium of the Lamb
In Advent 2014, St. Agnes is introducing a model of faith formation for young children called the Catechesis
of the Good Shepherd (CGS). CGS was developed over 60 years ago by Sofia Cavalletti. Together with Dr.
Gianna Giobbi, she developed a program for 3 to 12 year olds on Church doctrine, the Bible and the Holy
Mass with a hands-on approach using the Montessori method. Children are grouped based on age, with
three different levels. At St. Agnes we are offering Level 1, which is for children from ages 3 through 5.
Why start a program for 3 to 5 year-olds?
At this age, children are developmentally ready and excited to form a deeper relationship with Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who calls them by
name. Children of this age are deeply connected to God; they can easily fall in love with Jesus and begin a lifelong relationship with our Good
Shepherd. Waiting until the child is 6 or 7 would mean passing this sensitive period for the personal relationship with Jesus and jumping into
the moral reasoning stage. With a foundation of love, the law of God is not just an obligation but, a freely given response to God's great gift of
love.
What is an Atrium? Why isn’t it called a classroom?
The Good Shepherd environment is called an atrium. It is a specially prepared room with beautiful hand-made child-size materials. Our
"Atrium of the Lamb" at St. Agnes is on the top floor of Thomas Patrick Hall.
What do children do in the Atrium?
In the atrium, children fall in love with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. The atrium experience is the foundation for a life-long relationship with God
which is then lived out in the Church community. Children live the central mysteries of our faith by working with and reflecting upon materials
that revolve around the life of Christ, liturgical colors, geography, the altar and the Eucharist, the Gospels of the birth, passion and
resurrection of Jesus, Advent prophecies, the parable of the Good Shepherd, the Kingdom parables, and Baptism. The core essentials of the
faith are presented the first year, which are then built upon in following years. Time spent working with materials, generally child-sized
models, allows the child to enter into the presentation in a more personal and prayerful way.
The level 1 atrium follows a cycle over the course of three years. Each year builds upon what was presented the previous year, taking into
account the child's development and changing needs.
When is CGS offered for children at our parish?
We will hold the Level 1 atrium on Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. beginning on December 4th and a second session for
another group of children on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. beginning on December 6th.
Who teaches the children?
In the atrium, Christ is the teacher. St. Paul said “It is Christ who teaches, not I.” The catechist, who gives presentations to small groups of
children, is seen as a guide and not a teacher. Afterwards, the child is able to do works in the atrium. The child is given this personal work
time so that the Holy Spirit can be the inner teacher. “I will send you an advocate… the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth”.
What else do I need to know as a parent?
One of the hallmarks of CGS is the intense focus and concentration the children can experience during a presentation by the catechist or
while working with the materials. To maintain this atmosphere, we ask that the children be dropped off on time. Parents are welcome to
observe the atrium by scheduling a time with the catechist in advance. Observers are seated in a chair by the edge of the room so as not to
distract the children. Hopefully, too, the stillness will allow the observer to enter into the spirit of meditation along with us!

En el Adviento de 2014, Santa Inés introduce un modelo de formación en la fe para los niños pequeños que se
llama la Catequesis del Buen Pastor (CGS). CGS fue desarrollado hace más de 60 años por Sofia Cavalletti.
Junto con el Dr. Gianna Giobbi, desarrollaron un programa de 3 a 12 años de edad en la doctrina de la Iglesia,
la Biblia y la Santa Misa con un enfoque práctico sobre el uso del método Montessori. Los niños se agrupan
por edad, con tres niveles diferentes. En Santa Inés estamos ofreciendo el nivel 1, que es para los niños de
edades de 3 a 5.
¿Por qué iniciar un programa de 3 a 5 años de edad?
A esta edad, los niños están listos en su desarrollo y emocionado de formar una relación más profunda con
Jesús, el Buen Pastor, que los llama por su nombre. Los niños de esta edad están profundamente conectados
con Dios; que pueden caer fácilmente en el amor con Jesús y comenzar una relación de por vida con nuestro
Buen Pastor. Esperar hasta que el niño sea 6 o 7 años de edad significaría pasar este período sensible para
la relación personal con Jesús y saltar en el escenario el razonamiento moral. Con una base de amor, la ley
de Dios no es sólo una obligación, sino, una respuesta dada libremente al gran amor de Dios.
¿Qué es un Atrio? ¿Por qué no se llama un salón de clases?
El buen ambiente del pastor se llama un atrio. Se trata de un salón especialmente preparado con materiales
preciosos hechos a mano de tamaño infantil. Nuestro "Atrio del Cordero" en Santa Inés está en el 2do piso de
Thomas Patrick Hall.
¿Qué hacen los niños en el Atrio?
En el atrio, los niños se enamoran con Jesús, el Buen Pastor. La experiencia en el atrio es la base para una
vida en relación con Dios que luego se vive en la comunidad de la Iglesia. Los niños viven los misterios
centrales de nuestra fe, trabajando con y reflexionar sobre los materiales que giran en torno a la vida de
Cristo, colores litúrgicos, la geografía, el altar y la Eucaristía, el Evangelio del nacimiento, pasión y
resurrección de Jesús profecías, Adviento, la parábola del Buen Pastor, las parábolas del Reino, y el
Bautismo. Los elementos esenciales fundamentales de la fe se presentan el primer año, que luego se
desarrollará en años siguientes. El tiempo dedicado a trabajar con materiales, modelos en general, a los
tamaños de niños, permite que el niño entre en la presentación de una forma más personal y orante.
El nivel 1 sigue un ciclo en el transcurso de tres años. Cada año se basa en lo que se presentó el año anterior,
teniendo en cuenta el desarrollo del niño y las necesidades cambiantes.
¿Cuando se ofrece CGS para los niños en nuestra parroquia?
Vamos a ofrecer el Nivel 1 los jueves de 9:30am a 11am comenzando el 4 de diciembre y una segunda
sesión para otro grupo de niños los sábados de 9am a 10:30am comenzando el 6 de diciembre.
¿Quién enseña a los niños?
En el atrio, Cristo es el maestro. San Paulo dijo: "Cristo es el que enseña, no yo" El catequista, que da
presentaciones a grupos pequeños de niños, es visto como una guía y no un maestro. Posteriormente, el niño
es capaz de hacer obras en el atrio. El niño se le da este tiempo de trabajo personal para que el Espíritu
Santo pueda ser el maestro interior. "Te enviaré un defensor... el Espíritu de verdad, él os guiará a toda la
verdad".
¿Qué más necesito saber como padre?
Una de las señas de identidad de CGS es el intenso enfoque y la concentración que los niños experiencia
durante una presentación por parte del catequista o mientras el trabajo con los materiales. Para mantener este
ambiente, le pedimos que los niños sean dejados a tiempo. Los padres están invitados a observar el atrio
mediante la programación de un tiempo con la catequista de antemano. Los observadores están sentados en
una silla junto a la orilla de la habitación, para no distraer a los niños. Con suerte, también, la quietud le
permitirá al observador a entrar en el espíritu de la meditación junto con nosotros!
