ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, September 27 is the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul. St. Vincent was born in France in 1580. St. Vincent is best known for his work with the poor and disadvantaged. A priest with a great zeal for preaching the Catholic faith and a love for the Blessed Sacrament, he was keenly aware of the truth of the scriptures: “If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,’ but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2: 15-16) “If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him? Children let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.” (1 John 3:17) St. Vincent died in 1660, but his work for the poor continues. In 1833, Blessed Antoine Frederic Ozanam founded the St. Vincent de Paul Society as a Catholic human service organization in memory of St. Vincent dedicated to evangelization and helping the poor. The work of the Society has spread throughout the world. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is the outreach program of our parish. It is truly, in my estimation, the shining star of St. Leo the Great parish. We are blessed with dedicated volunteers on call throughout the week to assist those in great need. These volunteers give of their time and talent to assess and meet the needs of our suffering brothers and sisters. None of this possible without our active participation through involvement in food donations and contributions through the “poor boxes”. We all need to examine and consider or lives in light of the scriptures. Am I grateful for the blessings given to me by God? Do I live the faith I profess as fully as I could? Do I see my own efforts at reaching out to those in need as being simply a “nice” thing to do rather than as an essential and constitutive element of my Catholic faith? Brothers and sisters, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth! September 28, 2014 It is amazing that something as simple as bringing a few cans of our “forgotten” or “extra” food to church can and does make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. In serving our brothers and sisters in need, we serve Jesus Christ Himself. “'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' " +++++ Next Saturday October 4 is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. We will celebrate the blessing of animals in front of the church at the statue of St. Francis at 10 AM. In Christ, Rev. David A. Music Liturgy at St. Leo the Great Joining a choir gives us a chance to minister to others through music – to serve the church. What a privilege to be used by God for this purpose! Ultimately the best reason to join a church choir is that you get to praise God through song. Our choirs will soon return (after a brief summer vacation) to leading the congregation in song. Is God calling you to join one of our choirs and serve the church in this way? If so, the best time to join is NOW. Please contact our music director, Lorraine Neill: [email protected] or 703-273 -4682 if you would like to join any of our choirs. If you are interested in joining our YOUTH CHOIR or TEEN CHOIR contact Lorraine Neill: [email protected] or 703-273-4682 The ADULT CHOIR is in great need of SOPRANOS!!!! They also prepare music for Holy Days, Confirmation, Christmas Midnight Mass, Holy Week, & other celebrations where music is needed. The CONTEMPORARY CHOIR sings at the 9:00 AM Mass under the direction of Ann LaBarge, and rehearses Thursdays in the St. Cecilia music room at 7:30 PM. If you would like to sing in this choir, please contact Ann at [email protected] Our HANDBELL CHOIR is looking for new members. They meet on Wednesday from 6:30–7:30 PM. It is necessary to have a basic knowledge of note reading to be a successful ringer. Please contact Lorraine Neill if you are interested. We are in need of CANTORS to lead the singing once or twice a month at our Masses. If you are a professionally trained singer, perhaps you are being called to serve the church in this way. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those who have never been baptized and those who were baptized in a non-Catholic church. RCIA is also the best way for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for the final Sacrament of Initiation. Every September, a new RCIA class begins at St. Leo the Great and we invite any adult who would like to join the Catholic Church, be confirmed, or who is simply interested in learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic Christianity to come and join us. While classroom work is part of the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices, and devotions of Catholicism. There is no obligation, only an opportunity to learn! RCIA meets on Tuesdays from 7:30pm-9:00pm in the Guadalupe Room, Parish Hall. For additional information, please contact Carolyn Smith: [email protected] or 703-273-5369.
