HISTORY OF THE SITE
In 1936, the SS built Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
on the edge of the town of Oranienburg. Up to 1945, more
than 200,000 people from all over Europe were incarcerated here, and many tens of thousands died of hunger and
disease and from the effects of forced labour and mistreatment, or were victims of systematic extermination.
Sachsenhausen also housed the offices of the administrative Centre of the Terror in Concentration Camps, from
where all other Concentration Camps were managed.
From 1945-1950, Soviet Special Camp No. 7/No. 1 was
located on the site.
In 1961, the GDR opened the Sachsenhausen National
Memorial. The present Memorial and the Sachsenhausen
Museum have been part of the Brandenburg Memorials
Foundation since 1993.
THE FRIENDS OF SACHSENHAUSEN is a nonprofit organisation that was founded in 1998 by German
and international well known representatives from economy, politics, and cultural life. Our aim is to support the
Sachsenhausen Memorial financially and ideologically. With
the contribution for the tour you directly help to preserve
the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum.

En el año 1936 las SS construyeron el campo de concentración Sachsenhausen a las afueras de la ciudad de
Oranienburgo. Más de 200.000 personas de toda Europa
fueron detenidas aquí hasta el año 1945. Decenas de miles perdieron la vida a causa del hambre, las enfermedades, los trabajos forzados y los maltratos o fueron víctimas de los operativos sistemáticos de exterminio. En
Sachsenhausen se encontraba la oficina central del sistema de campos de concentración, desde donde fueron dirigidos todos campos de concentración nacionalsocialistas.
Entre 1945-1950 se encontraban aquí los campos especiales soviéticos Nr. 7 y Nr. 1.
En 1961 la antigua RDA inauguró el Monumneto Nacional
Conmemorativo de Sachsenhausen. El actual Monumento
Conmemorativo y Museo de Sachsenhausen forma parte
desde 1993 de la Fundación de Monumentos Conmemorativos de Brandeburgo.
