Dear Family,
Your child is learning how to multiply fractions and mixed numbers in this
topic. He or she will multiply fractions and whole numbers, two fractions,
two mixed numbers, mixed numbers and whole numbers, or mixed numbers
and fractions. Your child will use rounding and compatible numbers to
estimate products, and will use the skills he or she has learned to solve
real-world, multiple-step problems.
You can use the suggestions below to help your child develop confidence
in multiplying fractions and mixed numbers.
How Much Do I Need?
Look for opportunities in everyday activities to multiply fractions and
mixed numbers. Encourage your child to estimate the products first.
Recipes Recipes often require adjustments. Have your child write out
a new ingredient list after adjustments such as the following:
• What is half of the recipe? three-fourths? two-thirds? (multiply each
ingredient by _12 , _34 , or _23 )
• What is twice the recipe? 1_12 times? 12 times? (multiply each
ingredient by 2, 1_12 , or 12)
Home Projects Home projects might include activities such as fencing
a garden, building a bird house, or making curtains.
• How much fencing do we need if each side of the garden is 3_12 feet
long? 4_13 feet long? (3_12 ⫻ 4 ⫽ 14 feet; 4_13 ⫻ 4 ⫽ 17_13 feet)
• What length of board should we buy if we need 5 pieces of wood and
each piece is 6_78 inches long? (6_78 ⫻ 5 ⫽ 34_38 inches)

• How much fabric do we need for 4 curtains if the pattern calls for
7_56 yards per curtain? (7_56 ⫻ 4 ⫽ 31_13 yards)
