Apuntes - Past Perfect
El verbo << haber >> significa “to have” en inglés. Se usa como verbo
auxiliar para ayudar la construcción del pluscuamperfecto (past perfect).
The past perfect tense is considered a compound tense because it requires
two verbs to form the tense.
In order to form the past perfect you need the imperfect form of the verb
<< haber >> and the past participle.

haber - to have
yo había
nosotros habíamos
tú habías
vosotros habíais
él había
ellos habían
ella había
ellas habían
usted había
ustedes habían
The past perfect tense is used when a past action was completed prior to
another past action. Expressions such as “ya”, “antes”, “nunca”, “todavía”
and “después” will often appear in sentences where one action was
completed before another.
Cuando llegaron los padres, los niños ya habían comido.
When the parents arrived, the children had already eaten.
Yo había comido antes de llamarles.
I had eaten prior to calling them.
