EVEN on an island where every bend
in the road seems to offer a vista
more stunning than the last, Es
Cubells represents something special. Emerald trees and golden rocks
tumble down the steep slope to a
clear sea of azure and turquoise. In
the middle distance the island of
Formentera seems almost to float on
the sparkling water.
The last house on the hill, commanding probably the most spectacular
view, is a symphony of straight white
lines and angles. In another environment it might feel clinical, impersonal
or even cold. But in this setting it just
works. There is no point in competing
with the spectacular backdrop. You
want to see the surroundings, feel
them, be part of them.
The house is the creation of Diederik van Maren and his company Dita
Building. "Our style is minimalistic, yes, but we try to use it in a warm
way," he says, slightly wary of the negative connotations associated with
this "less is more" philosophy of architecture.
"What we try to do is create a feeling of space with long, open lines so
you can see right through to the terrace and the sea. We don't like to
design anything in our buildings that will block the view," he says.
Other minimalistic trends he incorporates include the use of elements
to create consciously multifunctional spaces. So, for example, the elegant geometric wooden steps down to the terrace also serve as a small
amphitheatre for outdoor entertaining.
In fact, Dita's properties seem purpose-built for entertaining; praise
comes from no other than David Guetta and Akon who filmed the
video for 'Sexy Chick' in a house built in Santa Gertrudis. The properties are also places friendly to family and children, something that's
not always true of stripped-back modernist construction.
Bright splashes of colour - funky pieces of furniture, bold works of art
- serve as well to remove the lack of soul which can accompany minimalistic architecture. There's even room for humour in choice of pieces
such as traditional Chesterfield sofas and armchairs re-imagined in
metallic leather along with the two giraffes - one red, one white - that are
fast becoming Dita's unofficial mascots.
It's partly Ibiza's sense of fun and freedom that persuaded van Maren
and his family to move to the island four years ago from the Netherlands,
where he had run a successful property company for more than 15 years.
"I love Amsterdam and I still return frequently, but you don't get the
same opportunity to be creative there. People do have swimming pools
with chill-out areas built, but what's the point when you can hardly ever
use them?" he asks. "Also, I've just bought a plot of 19,000 sq m of land.
I couldn't do that in Holland."
Of course, he hasn't chosen exactly the ideal time to set up a construction business, but he remains fairly sanguine. "There's a really
big problem in the south of Spain with prices falling so fast. It's not
so bad here. Prices have dropped a little, but not as much. People
who've got money now are not going to wait five years to buy a nice
house."
His vote of confidence comes in the form of his company which now
employs 28 people including an architect, project manager, interior
designer and two engineers. They've also moved from Marina Botafoch to
an ancient and historic finca on the Sant Josep road on the outskirts of
Ibiza Town.
This may seem slightly contradictory for such a modernist construction
company. But they've made the place their own. Just look on the roof and
see if the giraffes are home.

líneas y ángulos rectos. En otro entorno
podría considerarse clínica, impersonal e incluso fría. Pero en estos alrededores funciona a la perfección. No
merece la pena competir con el espectacular acantilado. En ella uno quiere
ver el entorno, sentirlo y ser parte de él.
La casa es la creación de Diederik van Maren y su compañía Dita Building.
"Nuestro estilo es minimalista, sí, pero intentamos utilizarlo de un modo acogedor", dice, ligeramente preocupado por las connotaciones negativas asociadas
a la filosofía arquitectónica del "menos es más".
"Lo que intentamos hacer es crear un sentimiento de espacio con líneas largas
y abiertas para que se pueda ver directamente la terraza y el mar. No nos gusta
diseñar nada en nuestros edificios que bloquee la vista", dice van Maren.
Otra tendencia minimalista que él incorpora incluye el uso de elementos para crear espacios conscientemente multifuncionales. Así, por ejemplo, los elegantes escalones de madera en formas geométricas de la
terraza también sirven de pequeño anfiteatro para entretener al aire libre.
De hecho, las propiedades de Dita parecen ser construidas con el
propósito de entretener; recibiendo los elogios de los mismísimos David
Guetta y Akon, que filmaron el video para 'Sexy Chic' en una casa
construida por él en Santa Gertrudis. Los inmuebles además también son
lugares perfectos para la familia y los niños, algo que no sucede siempre
con las construcciones más modernistas.
Toques de colores llamativos - mobiliario funky y piezas de arte atrevidas
- sirven también para eliminar la falta de alma que pude acompañar a la
arquitectura minimalista. Incluso hay espacio para el humor en la elección
de piezas como los tradicionales sofás y sillones Chesterfield tapizados en
pieles metalizadas junto a las dos jirafas - una roja y una blanca - que
rápidamente se están convirtiendo en las mascotas no oficiales de Dita.
Es en parte el sentido de la diversión y la libertad de Ibiza que convencieron
a van Maren y a su familia para mudarse a la isla hace cuatro años desde
Holanda, donde dirigió una compañía constructora de éxito más de 15 años.
"Me encanta Ámsterdam y todavía vuelvo a menudo, pero allí no encuentras las mismas oportunidades de ser creativo. La gente se hace construir
piscinas con zonas chill-out, pero ¿para qué si no pueden utilizarlas?", pregunta. "Además, acabo de comprar un terreno de 19.000m2. No podría
comprar algo así en Holanda".
Por supuesto, no ha elegido exactamente el momento ideal para presentar sus planes de construcción, pero se muestra bastante optimista.
"Realmente hay un gran problema en el sur de España donde los precios
están cayendo en picado. Aquí no está tan mal. Los precios han bajado un
poco, pero no tanto. La gente que tiene dinero ahora no va a esperar cinco
años a comprar una casa bonita".
Su voto de confianza se traduce en su compañía que ahora emplea a 28
personas incluyendo un arquitecto, aparejador, diseñador de interiores y
dos ingenieros. También se han trasladado desde Marina Botafoch a una
antigua finca en la carretera de Sant Josep a las afueras de Ibiza ciudad.
Esto puede parecer contradictorio para una compañía tan modernista.
Pero han hecho el sitio suyo. Simplemente fíjate en el tejado y mira si las
jirafas están en casa.
