OLIVER TWIST- LYRICS Author: Charles Dickens Adaptation: Mar Colàs Translation: Matthew McDaid Music: Neus Kaori Lyrics: Jordi Fornieles [SONG 1: ORPHANS' SONG] COOK: It's dinner time, silly boys! OLIVER & CHILD: We're so hungry! We're so hungry! We haven't eaten since the morning. There is a noise coming from my gut, all it wants is a bit of grub. We're so hungry! We're so hungry! We have to wait until the evening for a soup that has no taste to stop the noises our stomach makes. OLIVER: I have no mummy! And no daddy! The orphanage is a home to me. In the shadows we shall wait for the soup that has no taste. OLIVER & CHILD: I have no mummy! And no daddy! The orphanage is a home to me. In the shadows we try to sleep with our stomachs really empty. We are orphans! We are orphans! We live the life that we are given. We are orphans! We are orphans! We live the life that we are given. OLIVER: We're so hungry! We're so hungry! We're so hungry! We're so hungry! (Oliver and the child devour the soup.) CHILD: This soup is really disgusting! OLIVER: I'm still hungry! I'm still hungry! MAGATZEM D’ARS 1/11 (Oliver and the child carry on devouring the soup. At the end, Oliver stands up to ask for more food.) CHILD: Oliver! Where are you going? OLIVER: I'm still hungry! Very hungry! CHILD: Me too. This soup is disgusting. It makes me want to vomit. OLIVER: Me too, but I'm too hungry. My stomach won't stop making noises. I need more food. (Oliver begins to walk over to the cook.) CHILD: Oliver! Where are you going? You can't try to trick the cook. He's going to catch you. OLIVER: Well I don't care! The cook is being unfair. I'm starving over here. CHILD: We are orphans! We are orphans! We live the life that we are given. OLIVER: I can't stand this stomach ache anymore. CHILD: Don’t you remember what happened to Sami? They shut him in the attic for three days. OLIVER: (Afraid) In the dark. CHILD: And without even a piece of bread. OLIVER: (Obstinate and brave) Well I don't care! I'm hungry! [SONG 2: HOW I MISS YOU, MUMMY (I)] BOY: I talk about what I want and who I want. I am your master, remember? OLIVER: You're nobody! BOY: What? OLIVER: You're nobody! BOY: How dare you, you little rat? How dare you talk like that? MAGATZEM D’ARS 2/11 OLIVER: Enough, you bad man! I've lived on my own, on my own I will stay. (Oliver runs away. The boy laughs and leaves by the opposite side. Night falls and Oliver goes onto the stage.) OLIVER: How I miss you, Mummy, I wish that you could hug me. You're the one who loves me. How I miss you, Mommy. Where have you been hiding? Please, come here and find me and lay down here beside me. How I miss you, Mummy. I look for your face in the sky, over past the forest, even past the houses, where the smoke can't get us. You're an angel up high. Spread your wings upon us, light the night around us, the light of hope surrounds us. Mummy, please look at me. Mummy, watch over me. Mummy, you are my angel who looks after me. How I miss you, Mummy, I wish that you could hug me. You're the one who loves me. How I miss you, Mummy. Where have you been hiding? Please, come here and find me and lay down here beside me. How I miss you, Mummy. [SONG 3: STEALING IS AN ART] FAGIN: We'll see about that, little one. If you want to work with me, there are three golden keys MAGATZEM D’ARS 3/11 that you will have to seek. Be discrete, agile and know how to act. OLIVER: I know how to be discrete and agile, watch and you'll see, yes, sir! (Oliver does an acrobatic movement.) OLIVER: You see, good sir? Why do I need to be an actor? Oh why? DODGER: (Laughing) Oh why? OLIVER: Oh why? FAGIN: Watch and learn, little one! We will show you the art of robbing! The greats tell the secret that you have to believe in that's it's vital to act to be great and excel at being a pick-pocket. Now you play your character... DODGER: Listen, boy… FAGIN: ...and convince all the others. DODGER: You'll see why. FAGIN & DODGER: They won't see you coming with your fingers ready inside of their big pockets. This is the art of stealing, stealing is an art, unique from the start. We are the artists of theft, actors we're the best, stealing is an art. Watch! (Fagin and Dodger play a scene in which Fagin acts like a helpless old man to steal from a rich child.) MAGATZEM D’ARS 4/11 FAGIN: Young man, come here and help me. DODGER: Old man, what can I carry? FAGIN: I am wrinkled and old. I need help to carry on and cross the street. DODGER: Like a rich boy with manners, I will help you, grandfather. Helping the elderly is my sacred duty. FAGIN: And may the Lord be with you. FAGIN & DODGER: Amen! DODGER: I am very well mannered and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. FAGIN: Make him look away at another place. Arm under his back and in his pocket you will find. Take what's in his bag or any other sack. DODGER: And blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and now the street we've crossed. FAGIN: And may the Lord be with you. FAGIN & DODGER: Amen! OLIVER: So you've just robbed a child. Let's see how you do with an adult. FAGIN & DODGER: Watch! (Fagin and Dodger play a scene where Dodger steals a rich man who's going for a walk.) FAGIN: Oh, what a beautiful day for a walk, blah, blah, blah, blah. DODGER: Make him look away at another place. Arm under his back and in his pocket you will find. Take what's in his bag or any other sack. MAGATZEM D’ARS 5/11 FAGIN: Blah, blah, blah, my bag! And I didn't feel a thing. FAGIN & DODGER: Amen! This is the art of stealing, stealing is an art, unique from the start. We are the artists of theft, actors we're the best, stealing is an art. (Oliver joins the thieves and robs them without their realising.) OLIVER & FAGIN & DODGER: This is the art of stealing, stealing is an art, unique from the start. OLIVER: We are the artists of theft, actors we're the best, stealing is an art. (Oliver shows the objects he has just stolen from the thieves.) DODGER: You stole from us! OLIVER: And you didn't feel a thing. FAGIN: You're going to go far, little one! OLIVER & FAGIN & DODGER: This is the art of stealing, stealing is an art, unique from the start. We are the artists of theft. actors we're the best, stealing is an art. [SONG 4: I DON'T WANT TO BE ALONE] BROWNLOW: Oliver, do you have a place to live? Do you have a family? OLIVER: Once I had a mummy and lots of love she gave me. She died sick and lonely. How I miss you... Mummy. MAGATZEM D’ARS 6/11 No mummy and no daddy, the orphanage was a home to me. No sleep and no food to eat, the hunger was too much for me. OLIVER: So I came to the streets of London, where a boy came to help me and I've been living at a home with them, stealing wallets from the rich men. We are orphans! We are orphans! We live the life that we are given. OLIVER & BROWNLOW: We (you) are orphans! We (you) are orphans! BROWNLOW: It's not the life you have to live in. OLIVER: He has helped me. BROWNLOW: Helped you? Help that does not help is no help at all. You know what? There is another option. You'll live with me. OLIVER: With you? BROWNLOW: If you see my house, you'll say it's very big, it has lots of rooms and beautiful things. If you see my house, you'll see how lucky I am to live with such space and with food in the pan. But I live alone, all alone. If you see my house, you can't see the emptiness that runs through the rooms with silent loneliness. If you see my house, you can't see the fear of the man who owns it, but cannot ever share. I live alone. OLIVER: Like me. BROWNLOW: All alone. OLIVER: I am also alone. BROWNLOW: Then that makes both of us. MAGATZEM D’ARS 7/11 OLIVER & BROWNLOW: I don't want to be alone ever again. OLIVER: I don't want to be afraid... BROWNLOW: ...ever again. OLIVER & BROWNLOW: We are strong enough together, we will look after each other. We will be the best of friends, we'll be a team till the end. I don't want to be alone ever again. [SONG 5: HOW I MISS YOU, MOMMY (II)] DODGER: How I miss you, Mummy. I wish that you could hug me. You're the one who loves me. How I miss you, Mummy. I try to live by stealing, the shadows are a home to me, in the fog you can't see me, always looking behind me. In a world full of thieves, all my friends are leaving, maybe even stealing what is in my pockets. But you can trust Oliver. FAGIN: Dodger! What is going on? Where is Oliver? DODGER: Forgive me, Fagin. FAGIN: Dodger! DODGER: It is my fault. FAGIN: Dodger! Stop apologising. Where is Oliver? DODGER: They have caught him. [SONG 6: ONE OF US] MAGATZEM D’ARS 8/11 FAGIN: You vain silly little boy, do you think you're better than I? You think you can live with the rich? But your place is right here in the ditch. FAGIN: You're a worthless little child, who had no one there when you cried. I have given you my bread and you slept in one of my beds. You are one of us, another one of us, and you will always be. And you will always be! You vain silly little boy, Do you think you're better than I? You are one of us, another one of us, and you will always be. And you will always be! Don't you move from here. And don't do anything stupid. There's lots of work to be done. (Fagin leaves.) OLIVER: How could I even think that a good future I could have had? Rich clothes are there for the rich and I'll be kicked into the ditch. I'm a silly little boy, a good life I cannot enjoy! The poor life that I come from, no one can ever get out. I am one of us, another one of us, and I will always be. And I will always be! FAGIN: (Offstage) Oliver, come! Quickly! OLIVER: I live the life that I am given. (Oliver leaves. Dodger goes into Mr. Brownlow's.) DODGER: This house is very big, MAGATZEM D’ARS 9/11 with lots of rooms and beautiful things. Who is the lucky man to live with such space and with food in the pan. DODGER: How silly have I become? How could I have let this go on? I have to find Oliver's friend and tell him what's going on. Oliver deserves another life. I will find the way to fix this when I talk to mister... BROWNLOW: (Offstage) Oliver, is that you? DODGER: Is it him? I don't know. Yes? No? BROWNLOW: (Offstage) Oliver? DODGER: I'll hide. (Dodger hides behind the furniture. Mr Brownlow comes in.) BROWNLOW: Oliver? There's nobody here. And Oliver has been gone for a long time. You're a worthless little child, who had no one there when you cried. [SONG 7: YOUR LIFE CAN TURN AROUND] BROWNLOW: I don't want to be alone ever again. OLIVER: I don't want to be afraid ever again. OLIVER & BROWNLOW: We are strong enough together. We will look after each other. We will be the best of friends, we'll be a team till the end. (Mr Brownlow leaves the stage and Oliver follows him. Dodger walks behind the boxes and attracts Oliver's attention.) DODGER: Shh! OLIVER: (Quietly) See you soon, Dodger. MAGATZEM D’ARS 10/11 DODGER: See you around. I'll find you. (Oliver and Dodger leave the stage by opposite sides. Black out. Final number.) COMPANY: If things don't go well in life, just turn round and smile! If you cannot see the light, just sing for a while! Because your life can turn round, your life can turn round. With the luck that you have found, your life can turn round. If your heart wants to cry, just turn round and smile! If the rain falls from the sky, just sing for a while! Because your life can turn round, your life can turn round. With the luck that you have found, your life can turn round. The world can really surprise you with moments that you never knew. Be nice to the people around you and don't lose the hope that's inside you. Show us the courage inside you, bring down the walls that surround you. See the world with a different view, break the barriers and walk on through. Because your life can turn round, your life can turn round. With the luck that you have found, your life can turn round. Your life can turn round, your life can turn round. MAGATZEM D’ARS 11/11
