EL REGRESO DE CUBA A AMERICA LATINA: ¿EL
FIN DEL EXCEPCIONALISMO CUBANO?*

Resumen. Al comparar la historia de Cuba y las circunstancias
contemporáneas con aquellas del resto de la región, este artículo cuestiona el
excepcionalísimo de Cuba. Las últimas cuatro décadas han visto que Cuba se
ha apartado de los típicos patrones latinoamericanos tales como las
desigualdades económicas y geográficas. La Revolución, sin embargo, no ha
podido revertir una dependencia histórica del financiamiento externo ni
tampoco ha podido resolver sus inequidades raciales. Aún cuando la
Revolución efectivamente estableció un aparato político inusualmente efectivo,
no uso esta oportunidad para sustentar la democracia. Al ir erosionándose los
avaricies en bienestar social de la Revolución, Cuba sepárese cada vez más al
resto del continente y refleja el problema central que afecta a la región.

Abstract. "The return of Cuba to Latin America: The end of Cuban
Exceptionalism?" comparing Cuban history and contemporary circumstances to
those in the rest of the region, this article challenges the idea of Cuban
exceptionalism. The last four decades have seen Cuba move away from typical
Latin American pattern such as economic and geographical inequalities. The
Revolution has not been able, however, to reverse neither a historical
dependence on external financing nor has it resolved racial inequities. While
the Revolution did establish an unusually effective political apparatus, it did not
use this opportunity to nurture democracy. As the social welfare advances of the
revolution erode. Cuba resembles the rest of the continent ever more and
reflects the central problem facing the region.
