Reading is the gateway to learning, opening doors to faraway adventures, new possibilities and promising futures. Without strong reading skills, children will face challenges throughout their lives. That’s why Reading Matters. And that’s why SMART helps thousands of Oregon children each year develop the skills and self-confidence they need to read and succeed. We want your child to get the best possible start to reading this year, and to help with that, we’ll be sending information home in the books your child gets from the SMART program. Here are some common skills kids generally learn by certain ages: AGE READING SKILL AGE READING SKILL Preschool PreK • Likes to hear the same book over and over again 1st Grade • Reads one-syllable words • Knows how to open a book and turns one page • Knows there’s a right way to spell words at a time • Blends sounds into words • Learns words for things around him/her • Follows simple written instructions • Uses pictures to figure out what’s happening • States information learned while reading in the story 2nd Grade • Reads words with one and two syllables • Understands that text goes from left to right, • Attempts larger words using sounds top to bottom • Reads with more speed • Learns the “Alphabet Song” and can name 10 letters • Uses context to figure out new words in the alphabet • Summarizes stories • Uses new words and puts together longer sentences 3rd Grade • Continues to read with more speed • Answers open-ended questions about stories: • Learns new words through daily reading Why? How? He aquí algunas de las habilidades que los niños aprenden a ciertas edades: EDAD LA HABILIDAD LECTORA Preescolar • Le gusta leer el mismo libro varias veces • Sabe cómo abrir los libros y pasa las páginas una por una • Aprende y usa palabras para referirse a las cosas a su alrededor • Usa las ilustraciones para descifrar lo que sucede en el cuento PreK • Entiende que el texto va de izquierda a derecha y de arriba a abajo • Aprende la “canción del abecedario” y puede nombrar 10 letras como mínimo fuera de secuencia • Usa palabras nuevas y forma oraciones más largas • Responde preguntas abiertas sobre el cuento: ¿Por qué? ¿Cómo? ¿Qué?
