1. EL ADVERBIO: POSICIÓN EN LA ORACIÓN
Los adverbios en inglés tienen diferente lugar de colocación según el tipo:
1.- ADVERBIOS DE MODO:
Well, slowly, carefully, easily, loudly, ...
•
Se colocan al final de la oración: They talked quietly.
2.- ADVERBIOS DE TIEMPO:
Yesterday, then, now, soon, ...
•
Se colocan al principio o al final de la oración: He is coming tomorrow.
•
Still (todavía): aparece en oraciones de modalidad afirmativa; va colocado en
posición intermedia, esto es, entre el sujeto y el verbo: She still dislikes him.
Excepción: si el verbo de la oración es una forma del verbo “To Be”, se
coloca después de él: She is still in bed.
•
Yet (todavía): se combina con oraciones negativas e interrogativas, y se
coloca en posición final: We haven’t seen our new neighbours yet.
•
Already (ya): aparece en oraciones afirmativas y negativas, y se coloca en
posición intemedia: they have already finished.
•
Yet (ya): hace aparición en oraciones interrogativas y se coloca en posición
final: Has my mother phoned yet?
•
Just: utilizado con el pretérito perfecto se coloca entre el auxiliar y el participio,
y su significado es “acabar de + infinitivo”: They have just left.
3.- ADVERBIOS DE LUGAR:
Here, there, near, above, ...
•
Se colocan al final de la oración: I looked everywhere.
•
En concurrencia con adverbios de modo, éstos últimos ocupan lugar preferente:
He played well there.

En concurrencia con adverbios de tiempo, éstos van en último lugar: He played
very well at Wembley yesterday.
4.- ADVERBIOS DE FRECUENCIA:
Always, never, seldom, often, ...
•
Se colocan en posición intermedia, a no ser con el verbo “To Be”, con el que
van detrás: You have often been told not to do that / He is always on time for
meals.
5.- ADVERBIOS DE GRADACIÓN:
Nearly, quite, too, almost, ...
•
Si modifican a un adjetivo o adverbio se colocan delante, a excepción de
“enough” que va detrás: I was too hot to work / The box isn’t big enough.
•
Si modifican a un verbo, se colocan en posición intermedia: He can nearly
swim.
