 Dear Sturgis Resident, We offer the following guidelines from the Sturgis Fire Prevention Ordinance which should help reduce neighborhood complaints on burning. RESIDENTIAL TRASH BURNING: Household refuse from 1 and 2 family dwellings only may be burned between the hours of 7am and 7pm, Monday through Saturday. NO BURNING IS ALLOWED ON SUNDAY. ​
This refuse is restricted to clean burning processed wood and paper products and must be burned in an approved waste burner located at least 15 feet from any building or combustible fence. The burning of garbage, animal waste, construction materials or carpet, diapers, rubber and petroleum products, plastics and leather items and any flammable or combustible liquid is ​
banned throughout the city at all times​

A compost site is located on Fawn River Rd. between Lakeview St. and Nottawa St. for disposal of limbs, brush, leaves and grass clippings. COMPOST SITE INFORMATION (659­7271): Opens April through late October. Monday & Thursday Noon to 7:30pm Saturdays 9am to 5pm. GENERAL TRASH BURNING GUIDELINES: ➢ Do not burn items known to smolder or create odors. ➢ Have a well ventilated burner and empty ashes often. ➢ Choose a time of day when a light breeze is blowing to carry the smoke up and away from the area. ➢ Refrain from burning during calm, hot and or humid weather and during high wind conditions. ➢ Cover your barrel whenever possible with a screen to contain flying embers. El quemar basura como la defecacion de animalses, panales, plasticos, productos de cuero, o algun liquido o combustible inflammable esta complemente ​

EDIFICIOS DE RENTA: Esta completamente prohibido hacer fogatas o quemar basura en los edificios de 3 o mas apartamentos, o de negocios comerciales, industriales o de asamblea publica. QUEMAR HOJAS: Quemar hojar ha sido prohibido en la Ciudad de Sturgis desde el 1 de Enaro de 1991. NO SE PUEDE QUEMAR HOJAS ni en barriles, yarda, calle, terraza, paqueaderos. Un lugarde deshechos de yarde especial ha sido deignado en la ciudad para tirar la hojas, ramas, sacate, localizado en la calle Fawn River entre las calles Lakeview y Nottawa. Reglas generales para quemar: ➢ No quemar cosas que cree mucho olor o humo. ➢ Quemar en una area ventilado y desheche las cenizas pronto. ➢ Escoja un dia en que el viento pueda llevar el humo y olor lejos. ➢ No quemar cuando el clima esta caliente y humedo o cuando el viento este muy fuerte. ➢ Cubrir el barril con la tapa si bubiera muchas chipas de la lumbre.
