● We use the past continuous to describe an action in progress in the past.
● We form the past continuous with the subject + was/were + verb + ing.
● In questions the order is: was/were + subject + verb + ing?
● In short answers, we don’t repeat the verb + ing.
Ex. Last night I was watching TV = Anoche estuve viendo la tele.
My parents weren’t making dinner = Mis padres no estaban hacienda la cena.
Was it raining yesterday? = ¿Estuvo lloviendo ayer?
Yes, it was = Sí (estuvo) / No, it wasn’t = No (no estuvo)
REMEMBER

Wh-word + was/were + subject + verb + ing?
Where was she travelling? = ¿Dónde estuvo viajando?
What were you doing at eight o’clock yesterday? = ¿Qué estabas haciendo ayer a las ocho?

* 4.2. PAST SIMPLE AND PAST CONTINUOUS
● We often use the past continuous and past simple in the same sentence.
● We use the past simple for short actions. We use the past continuous for longer actions. The past
simple describes an event that interrupts a longer action in the past continuous.
● We use time expressions when (cuando) or while (mientras) with the past continuous to mean that
something took place during the time another action was happening.
● We usually use when before the past simple clause and while before the past continuous clause.
Ex. He was playing golf when the lightning struck him.
Él estaba jugando al golf cuando el rayo le golpeó.
The lightning struck him while he was playing golf
El rayo le golpeó mientras estaba jugando al golf.
My friend phoned while I was doing my homework.
Mi amigo llamó mientras yo estaba haciendo los deberes.
We were having dinner when they arrived.
Estábamos cenando cuando (ellos) llegaron.
I was having a shower when the phone rang.
Me estaba duchando cuando el teléfono sonó.
The phone rang while I was having a shower.
El teléfono sonó mientras me estaba duchando
