This lecture is about what the discovery of the New World meant for the Western World and the difficulty historians had to go through to write about what they saw, as the new reality in America was a challenge to a whole world of beliefs and attitudes. Given the inability to describe and account for the characteristics of the New World, the historians repeatedly resorted to wonder, as they had no assurance that the images that came before them would necessarily respond to reality. Thus, Columbus’s ships brought to America not only a new language and a new culture, but also the seed of a new literary expression. Writing involved more than simply news reporting, writing was an act of creation that gave way to a multitude of ways before the disconcerting plurality displayed in the New World. Hence the great Latin American novelists of the 20th century (Carpentier, Fuentes, García Márquez) recognize these historians as their predecessors and in their works they have found the seeds of what has been called magical realism, one of the most dazzling literary creations in American literature. Paloma Jiménez del Campo is a professor of Latin American literature at the Universidad de Complutense de Madrid. Her researches include a diverse genres and stages of Latin American literature with special emphasis given to the colonial era, Cuban literature and the Latin American short story. 5 5 DE MARZO MARCH 5 | SABADO SATURDAY | 11:59PM LUGAR VENUE: saGuijo Café. 7612 Guijo Street, San Antonio Village. “When I sing as Hyperpotamus, I let the demons out, I sing my heart out. It becomes something very physical: air is sucked in, only to be exhaled at a great force, making me feel dizzy with glee!” Hyperpotamus is a London-based multi-vocal solo artist from Madrid, Spain. He makes music using only his voice, a few microphones and a loop pedal. After 10 years of playing in bands as a drummer and pianist Hyperpotamus grew weary of the whole scene, ditched the eternal cycle of dragging drums from one unsavoury dive to another, and went solo, big time. Now, during his tour around South East Asia, we will have the opportunity to have our own “Hyperpotamus experience”. This is a must save-the-date for all the underground contemporary music lovers. Enjoy it! Now in Makati! A world of information, entertainment and culture at your fingertips. If you want to borrow films, reading books or listening music from Spain or Latin America, come and see us! If you still haven’t, we encourage you to visit our Miguel Hernández Library. Our library is open to all. It is not necessary to be a member of the library to use our materials. However, if you are interested in our language and culture we suggest signing up in our library to get a library card. The card allows you to borrow our books, material to learn Spanish, films or music. The Instituto Cervantes en Manila library, in spite of its relative youth -it was created in 1993-, has a long history. Indeed, an important part of its funds comes from the old Centro Cultural of the Spanish Embassy in Manila, plus new materials sent from Madrid to complete a collection of more than 31.000 items: books, journals, films, discs, etc. All of them have something in common: they are focused on the Spanish language and literature, both from Spain and from Spanish speaking countries. Of course, then, we could not leave out a Filipiniana section where we try to gather everything about the relationship between the Philippines, Spain and Latin America. On-site material is only one of the services our library can offer. We must include all the items available at a click: our collection of audiobooks, electronic books and journals. It is a priority of our library system to enhance this collection as prime movers of this type of materials in Spain. Our Library has so many projects for the future. We are preparing a research de distancia: nuestra colección de audiolibros, libros electrónicos y revistas electrónicas.
