They come in all colors, both
genders, operate everywhere,
appeal universally and, generally,
achieve the same results. In the
Denver metro area, their signs are
hung on the busiest streets where
they conduct their business as
openly as any banker or baker. Or,
they operate clandestinely, in offthe-beaten path homes or apartments.
Their world, they will tell you,
is based on a supernatural gift. But,
if you believe cops who have been
playing cat-and-mouse with them
throughout history, it is anything
but supernatural. Their gift, cops
say, is a con and usually based on
nothing more than a finely-tuned
ability to spot a ‘mark’ or target,
separate them from their money
and move on. They go by psychic,
seer or fortune teller.
“I think there is a segment of
the population who unfortunately
relies on this service,” says Ralph

I have a lifetime subscription to La Voz and find reading
the articles very interesting. Every week I look forward to
reading issues that affect the Latino community.
Being the only true bilingual newspaper in the Denver
Metro area is very valuable for the community. I have seen
people who have limited English reading skills who use La Voz
as an educational tool. They can read the English version of
the articles and then confirm that they understand what they
are reading by reading the Spanish version. Likewise those
with limited Spanish reading skills can do the same.
Thank you La Voz for recognizing our high school students and providing scholarships.
Val Vigil

The political career of Val Vigil dating back to his position of
Colorado State Representative, District 32. Vigil served from
1999-2006. Vigil then joined the Thornton City Council in
2009, then became the Mayor Pro Tem in January of 2013.
Vigil is also responsible for the original Asset Bill submitted
in Colorado which allowed in-state tuition for undocumented
students. The ASSET Bill became a reality in 2013. Vigil is
supportive of education via community involvement.

The Denver Zoo is celebrating the birth of three maned
wolf pups, which were born on May 1. The unnamed triplets,
made up of two males and one female, were born to mother,
Adrianna, and father, Inigo, and are the first of their species
to be born at the Zoo since 2009. All three pups were just
given a clean bill of health by Denver Zoo veterinarians.

The University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado State
University, Fort Collins have each received a $1.5 million grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. CU
Boulder will use small, inexpensive sensors to better monitor human exposure to residential burning pollution. They
will also collect data through health assessments and outdoor air quality measurements in Ghana. CSU will use cook
stove interventions in China, India, Kenya, and Honduras to
explore the emissions, chemistry, and movement of indoor
cook stove smoke, as well as conduct health assessments
and model exposures to improve understanding of climatic
impacts of stove interventions.

Building Healthy Places
The Colorado District Council of the Urban Land
Institute (ULI Colorado) has selected two communities for
its first two Building Healthy Places Workshops. In a oneday format, leading ULI Colorado volunteers will work with
the communities to find practical ways to improve the urban
environment in ways that benefit public health of residents.
The goal is to encourage: active living, healthy buildings,
access to nature and healthy food, and public safety. The
two communities chosen are Elyria/Swansea in Denver
and Lake Creek Village Apartments in Edwards, Colo. For

North Metro Fire Rescue District, the Broomfield
Veterans Memorial Museum and the Broomfield Police
Department are joining together to host the city and county’s
10th Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, June
14 in recognition of Flag Day. The ceremony will be at North
Metro Fire Station 61, 1275 Midway Boulevard in Broomfield
beginning at 11 a.m. Following the ceremony will be an open
house at the station and cookout.

Veterans Memorial Museum will be accepting retired flag
donations at the following locations until 5 p.m. on Friday,
June 13: North Metro Fire Rescue Headquarters, 101 Spader
Gov. John Hickenlooper signed a bill on
Thursday, May 29 sponsored by Rep. Tracy Kraft-Tharp to
create a suicide prevention commission that will make
recommendations to reduce the number of suicides in
Colorado. Colorado is known for having one of the highest
suicide rates in the country.

the Nigerian kidnapped girls are located.
However, he also said Nigeria’s military
will not be used to try to rescue them. Chief
Marshal Alex Badeh said, “We can’t kill our
girls in the name of trying to get them back.”
Dozens of girls have escaped, but more than
200 are still missing.
Egypt presidential elections extended: The Egyptian presidential elections were
extended an extra day in order to give
citizens a greater chance to vote. The election, which sees former army chief Abdel
Fattah al-Sisi against Hamdeen Sabahy, was
originally scheduled to be only two days.
Both candidates agreed to extend the voting
because of low voter turnout.

Indian girls killed: Three people,
including a police officer, have been arrested after two teenage girls were gang-raped
and left hanging from a mango tree in an
Indian village. The police officer was arrested because of allegations of siding with the
suspects. The girl’s families accused three
brothers of rape and murder. Police are still
searching for one of the brothers.
Thousands gather to watch trial in
China: A court in China sentenced 55 people
on terror charges in a stadium in Xinjiang
Province on Wednesday, May 28. There were
7,000 people present to watch the trial. The
trial is part of a response to terror attacks
linked to the Uyghur minority. Three of the
accused people were sentenced to death.

a delegation from the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce. Thomas Donohue, the head of
the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said that the
talks were about steps forward that might

The mask that is Subcomandante Marcos is no more

Subcomandante
Marcos of the
Ejército Zapatista de
Liberación Nacional
(EZLN) declared
before a contingent
of
his collaborators

that he will no longer exist. He will go back to being Rafael
Sabastián Guillén Vicente of Tampico in the
northeastern State of Tamaulipas.
Twenty years ago on January 1, 1994,
the Zapatistas began their revolution centered in the Lacandón jungle of southern
Chiapas. However, it was not until Marcos
showed up that the EZLN began its journey
on the world stage.
For many years this romantic masked
figure with a smoking pipe was the face of
the Zapatista rebellion. He gave presence to
an indigenous people yearning for a better
life after centuries of exploitation in the
richest region of Mexico.
I remember arriving in Chiapas with a
group of students on January 4, 1994 and
finding our ability to visit the area restricted
to Palenque, the ruins of the ancient city
and Palenque, the village that housed the
group. But we did have a front window view
of history in the making.
In one of the chapters of The Labyrinth
of Solitude, Octavio Paz talks about how
the Mexicans have taken on masks of different degrees of formality in order to face
a history of separation from who they were.
Pretending that you are someone who you
are not hides deep cavities of emptiness
created by the original rape of a people and
their land.
Mestizos carry the collective experience
of this tragedy in their psyche and seek
to hide it mainly from themselves. These
masks come off in times of great exhilaration such as the fiesta when everyone’s
guard is down.
Paz speaks about the Mexican
Revolution as creating the same type of
non-ordinary reality where the Mexican
opens up to reveals the scars of history as
he enters the killing fields of battle. It is in
that fiesta atmosphere that brothers killed
brothers in order to prove that they love
each other.
It is interesting that in the Zapatista
rebellion the actors did just the opposite and
put on the masks to go to war. Or were they
pretending to go to war in order to achieve
world support and understanding of their
plight?
The Mexican press is full of stories
about Marcos killing Marcos and the meaning of the act. The liberal newspapers tend
to portray the announcement as the completion of an epic task that raised the profile
of the injustices done to a people that had
enough.
The conservative newspapers tend to
talk about the rebellion as an intellectual
farce that did not change people’s lives.
They do point out that the governments of
Presidents Ernesto Zedillo and Fox were
taken in by the threat of revolution and
decided to negotiate for the sake of peace.
As the face of the Zapatista rebellion,
Subcomandante Marcos, his mask and pipe
became a real person to the world that in a
professorial way explained the aims of his
superiors and the aspirations of a people.
With the passing of time, that person, garb
and all, came to represent a kind of normality like that of so many hooded rebels
around the world.
Taking off the mask amounts to losing
the person and the loss of the person also
constitutes the loss of the world stage and the
reality it represents. What is left are a people
naked and showing the scars of history that
cannot be hidden except by another mask.

Recuerdo llegar a Chiapas con un grupo
de estudiantes el 4 de enero de 1994, buscando nuestra habilidad de visitar el área
restringida de Palenque, las ruinas de la
antigua ciudad de Palenque y el pueblo que
albergó al grupo. Pero si tuvimos una vista
de la ventana frontal a la historia que se
venía.
En uno de los capítulos de El laberinto
de la Soledad, Octavio Paz habla acerca de
los mexicanos que toman máscaras con
diferentes grados de formalidad con el fin
de enfrentar una historia de separación de
lo que ellos fueron. Tratar de ser lo que uno
no es esconde el gran hueco del vacío creado
por la violación original de una gente y su
terruño.
Los mestizos llevan la experiencia colectiva de esta tragedia en su psique y buscan esconderla más que todo de sí mismos.
Estas máscaras desaparecen en tiempo de
gran euforia como lo es una fiesta cuando la
guardia de todos está hacia abajo.
Paz habla acerca de la Revolución
Mexicana la creadora del mismo tipo de
realidad no-común en donde el mexicano se
abre para revelar las cicatrices de la historia
cuando entra a los campos de muerte de la
batalla. Es esta atmósfera de fiesta en donde
los hermanos matan a sus hermanos para
probar que ellos se aman entre sí.
Es interesante que en la rebelión
Zapatista los actores hicieran precisamente
lo contrario y se pusieron la máscara para
ir a la guerra. ¿O estaban tratando de ir a la
guerra para conseguir el apoyo del mundo y
que comprendieran su situación?
La prensa mexicana está llena de historias acerca de los asesinatos de Marcos
matando a Marcos y el significado de ese
acto. Los periódicos liberales tienden a
mostrar el anuncio como la terminación de
una tarea épica que mostraba el perfil de las
injusticias hechas a una gente que ya había
sufrido lo suficiente.
Los periódicos conservadores tienden
a hablar acerca de la rebelión como una
farsa intelectual que no cambió la vida de
la gente. Ellos dicen que los gobiernos de
los presidentes Ernesto Zedillo y Fox se
asustaron con la amenaza de la revolución y
decidieron negociar en busca de la paz.
A medida que la faz de la revolución
zapatista, el subcomandante Marcos, su
máscara y su pipa se convirtieron en una
persona real para un mundo que en forma

The Genealogical Society of Hispanic
America celebrates 25 years of ancestral
research

Genealogy is a science unlike any other.
It won’t lead to revolutionary discoveries
or uncover hidden treasures but for those
individuals who are patient enough to put
the pieces together, it can be a very gratifying experience.
“Genealogists always are looking for
their ancestors,” said Genealogical Society
of Hispanic America member Margaret
Turner. “We trace the lines back as far as
we can go. Everybody shares what they
research by placing articles in journals and
publishing it. Sometimes you can talk with
them and see if they tie into your lines and
many of them do.”
For years genealogical studies were
done on an individual basis and with limited
resources, particularly in the Hispanic community. This is something genealogy expert
Dr. Eduardo Torres sought to change.
“We founded it about 25 years ago,”
said Torres of GSHA. “Back then there
were no Hispanic genealogical societies in
Colorado. We were in the Colorado Society
of Genealogy, which did not satisfy us as far
as doing our Hispanic genealogy.”
With that Torres and David Salazar
began to meet at the Denver Public Library
and it was there GSHA was created.
“I was born in California and had no
clue as to what my ancestry was other
than Spanish,” said GSHA conference organizer and original member Donie Nelson. “It
wasn’t until I connected with GSHA in 1989
that I began to discover my ancestry.”
The 2014 GSHA annual conference will
coincide with the society’s 25th anniversary
and will carry the theme: “Our Spanish Roots,
Mexican Trunk and American Branches.”
Because of the special anniversary GSHA is
marking, the group has put together a special collection of speakers that will provide
an entertaining and informative offering
of information for genealogists of all levels.
“We have a list of top-notch speakers,”
Nelson said. “We are honoring the native
soil that our families have grown in, which

we call lay genealogists,” Nelson said. And
one of them is Angel Cervantes from New
Mexico.” Cervantes’expertise, DNA, is one
of the current hot-button topics in genealogical research.
“A lot of people are now asking, ‘if somebody tests my DNA, will they be able to find out
where my ancestors come from?’” The answer
is yes. “Cervantes is going to be speaking on
the connection of the Visigoth DNA to our new
world family. The Visigoth invaded northern
Spain and their DNA is in our DNA.”
According to Turner, that is the beauty
of genealogical research – getting to know
one’s ancestry, but also discovering the stories behind that ancestry.
“Often times we are looking at archives,
history and military information,” Turner
said. “We often will go to churches and look
at their baptism records and there are several resources now available online. A lot of
us are getting back into the 1300s and there
are many members of the organization that
have written substantial articles on their
ancestry.”

Despite the dubious and checkered reputations of those

things I suspected and some of the things were right on the

Psychics and spiritualists have been an integral part of
Mexican history dating back to before the conquest of Mexico.
Curanderismo is a holistic practice of medicine which also
includes spiritualism and psychic healing. A curandero or
curandera is often called upon to cure physical or spiritual
illness using prayer, herbs, massage and spiritualism.
Most curanderismo in the U.S. is practiced in the
American Southwest where there is a larger concentration
of Mexicans or Americans of Mexican descent. In fact, many
hospitals now regularly offer curanderismo as an option to
patients who request traditional medicine.
But even though many, if not most curanderos, ask for
no money, they will accept donations. And once money is
introduced, say cops, there will be temptation.
Investigators like Stevenson or Rosipajla caution anyone seeking out a psychic or seer, to simply to be careful. But,
unless a criminal complaint is filed, their hands are tied;
nothing can be done.
Before seeing a psychic, authorities suggest remembering
a long-time axiom: ‘If you are sitting at a table with other people
and cannot figure out who the mark is – you’re the mark.’

Tampoco es ilegal que los psíquicos

hacer miles de servicios. Es por esto por lo
cual, siempre y cuando tengan la licencia de
negocios correcta, ellos tienen sus puertas
abiertas y dan la bienvenida a cualquiera y
todos los que continúan creyendo en los servicios que ellos venden, incluyendo actuar
como espíritus-guía, astrólogos e intérpretes de sueños.
Aun cuando es fácil reírse de los psíquicos, una encuesta de CBS News de 2010

americanos “creen en fenómenos psíquicos
como el ESP (percepción extra sensorial),

con el uso de oraciones, hierbas, masajes y
espiritualismo.
La mayoría del curanderismo de los
EE.UU. se practica en el suroeste americano
en donde hay grandes concentraciones de
mexicanos o americanos de descendencia mexicana. En efecto, muchos hospitales ofrecen regularmente el curanderismo
como opción para los pacientes que piden
medicinas tradicionales.
Pero aun cuando muchos, si no la
mayoría de los curanderos, no piden dinero,
ellos aceptan donaciones. Y cuando entra el
dinero, dice la policía, existe la tentación.
Investigadores como Stevenson o
Rosipajla aconsejan a quien este buscando
un psíquico o un vidente, que sean simplemente cuidadosos. Pero, a menos que se
haga una demanda criminal, sus manos
están atadas, y no se puede hacer nada.
Antes de ver a un psíquico, las autoridades sugieren recordar el axioma antiguo:

The Rockies previously faced the
Phillies and were handed two losses in their
three-game series. The Rockies moved on to
Atlanta this week and split two games each
in a four-game series.
Colorado is now set to face division
rivals the Arizona Diamondbacks and the
L.A. Dodgers in Denver through Monday,
June 8. Colorado is hoping to bounce back
and regain ground on first place status as
they near the All Star break.
Soccer: The Colorado Rapids defeated
the Houston Dynamos 3-0. Colorado will face
the Chicago Fire Wednesday night at Dick’s
Sporting Goods Park.
Hockey: The New York Rangers pursue
a Stanley Cup dream as they battle it out
with the L.A. Kings for game four played
in L.A. on Wednesday night. The Kings are
heavily favored to win.
Other news: John Elway’s son was
arrested for assault during his recent trip to
Colorado. Young Elway is out on bail pending domestic violence charges.
