English classes offered to Mario's employees

Something special is happening at Mario’s Marina these days.
Marina employees, all of them local Guatemalans, are greeting each other and their customers in English, and smiling a
lot.
English classes are being offered to all employees who wish to learn, and to their children. The classes are sponsored by
the marina owner and the employees pay nothing for the classes. Cruisers who live aboard at the marina are teaching
the classes.
 “This is a win-win situation,― says Jim Ellis, owner of Mario’s. “We have an incentive program for our employees
provides them a bonus if they learn English. It opens up opportunities for them in the future. Our level of service improves
if they speak English, which makes us more competitive and is good for business. And they can practice at home with
their children.―Â
The English teachers are Carole Webster, aboard s/v Androsian, and Linda Card, aboard s/v Carina. Carole has many
years of classroom experience, having taught in England and the Bahamas.
Linda has been teaching Spanish to fellow cruisers for two years.
“Many of the employees have worked here for years and they are very motivated to learn,― Linda said. “It’s a real s
me to remember to speak English to them!―Â
Twenty employees and their children are participating in the new program.
The classes are held daily for small groups, after the employees have completed their shifts. The children are on
vacation from school now, so it’s the perfect time for them to have classes.
“It’s a pleasure to teach the children because they’re all so keen and eager to learn,― states Carole. “They rang
six to fifteen, so it’s a bit of a challenge, and good for practicing my Spanish skills.―Â
So don’t be surprised if you are greeted in English by the staff the next time you visit the Cayuco Club or the tienda at
Mario’s Marina. Your encouragement and patience will be most appreciated.Â

Algo especial pasa en Mario’s Marina estos dÃ-as.
Los empleados de la marina, todos Guatemaltecos, se saludan y saludan a sus clientes en inglés y rÃ-en mucho. Se
ofrecen clases de inglés a todos que quieren aprender, y a sus hijos también. La marina apoya las clases y los
empleados no pagan nada. Unas yatistas que viven a la marina enseñan las clases.Â
“Todo el mundo gana en este sitio,― dice Jim Ellis, dueño de Mario’s Marina. “Tenemos un programa para nuestr
empleados que les ofrece un plus si aprenden inglés. Se abre oportunidades para ellos en el futuro. El nivel de servicio
se mejora si ellos hablan inglés, somos más competitivos y es bueno para los negocios. También ellos pueden practicar
inglés en casa con sus hijos.―
 Las maestras son Carole Webster de Androsian y Linda Card de Carina. Carole tiene muchos años como maestra en
Inglaterra y en Las Bahamas.
Linda ha enseñado el español a las yatistas por dos años. “Muchos de los empleados trabajan aquÃ- por varios años
tienen motivación para aprender,― nos dice Linda. “¡Es difÃ-cil recordar que necesito hablar en inglés a los empleados

Los niños no asisten a la escuela ahora, entonces es la perfecta vez para ellos asistir a las clases de inglés.
“Es un gran placer enseñar a los niños, porque todos son listos y quieren aprender,― dice Carole. “Ellos van desde
quince años, asÃ- es estimulante y es bueno para mÃ- practicar el español.― Entonces no se sorprendan si los
empleados le saludan en inglés la próxima vez que visite al Club Cayuco, o a la tienda a Mario’s Marina.
Su paciencia y su ánimo son muy agradecidos.
