AsIembarkedonthisstudyabroadexperience,myworstfear
wasthatmySpanishwouldletmedown.Ihavepursuedadegree
inHispanicStudiesinpartbecauseinmygeneration,knowing
Spanishisofglobalimportance.Despitemycommitmenttothis
ventureofstudyinginSpain,inthebeginningIdoubtedmy
abilitytobecomeafluentSpanishspeaker.
OverthepastthreemonthsIhaveconfrontedthisfearheadon.
InitiallyIbecameeasilyfrustratedbecauseIstruggledto
conversewithnativespeakers.AsSeptemberpassed,however,
increasinglyIcouldhearthedistinctionbetweenwords.
AlthoughIwasunabletorespondquickly,IrecognizedthatIhad
experiencedmajorimprovementincomprehension.
Intheweeksthatfollowed,myspokenSpanishimprovedaswell.
November3rdmarkedthedaywheneverythingchanged.Itwas
asthoughIhadacquiredsomuchvocabularythatsuddenlyI
wasabletospeakmorefluidly.Whileshoppingorata
restaurant,Iwasbetterabletoexpressmyself.Ibegantoinitiate
casualconversationwhilewaitingforthebus.Itseemedthat
everywhereIwentnativeSpanishspeakerscomplimentedmy
Spanish.
DespitethisimprovementinmyspokenSpanish,asa
perfectionistIcontinuedtofeeldiscouragedattimes.
OnedayIconfidedinAndrés,oneofmyfavoriteprofessors.From
thestart,Andrésinspiredme.Itwasevidentthathestrongly
valueshisstudents’success,andthereisneveramomentwhen
heisnotenthusiastic,soIfeltcomfortabletalkingwithhim.“I
wouldliketospeaktoyouaboutsomethingthatisbothering
me,”Itoldhim.
-“Comein.”
-“Ioftenfindmyselffeelingembarrassedbymyaccentbecause
everyonerespondstomeinEnglish,whichmakesmefeel
incapableofspeakingSpanish.”
Andrésreassuredme:“Itisverycommontofeellikethat,butif
peoplerespondtoyouinEnglish,itisusuallybecausetheywant
topracticetheirEnglish.Don’tworryaboutit–youcancontinue
speakingSpanishwhiletheotherpersonspeaksinEnglish.Often,
whensomeonehearsfromyouraccentthatyouareAmerican,
theythink,‘Ah,anAmerican,straightoutofthemovies!”
Ilaughed.Andréshasawayofmakinglightofasituation,andI
feltmuchbetter.
IbegantorecognizehowmuchIhadaccomplished.Asour
programdirectorsaidlastweekatourgoodbyelunch,infour
monthswehadbecomecapableofcommunicatinginSpanishat
anadvanced,academiclevel.
OnSaturday,Iheadedtotheairportatthecrackofdawnwith
mytwo(extremelyheavy)bags.IfeltamixofemotionsasI
absorbedforthelasttimethesitesofBarcelona’sdistinctstreets.
MyfirstflighttookofffromBarcelona,SpainenroutetoNewark,
NewJersey.Aftertenhoursoftravelandlittlesleep,Isat,bleary–
eyed,atacaféneartheterminalwaitingformyfinalflight.A
livelygirlwholookedaboutmyagesatdownatthesametable.
“Iloveyourhat,”Isaid.
Asecondgirlsatdownatthetable.
-“Thanks!Ididn’trealizeIwasstillwearingit,”sheresponded,
assheremovedthefestiveSantahat.
-“Whereareyouheaded?”
-“I’mgoingtoItaly,andmyfriendisgoingtoIndia.I’vebeen
livingintheU.S.forthepastyearandahalf,andI’mexcitedto
seemyfamily.”
-“That’sfunny,becauseI’mreturningfromlivingabroadmyself!
It’ssoweirdtohearEnglisheverywhere.”
Laughing,sheresponded,“That’sexactlyhowIfeltwhenIfirst
cametoAmerica.IcouldbarelyspeakEnglish,anditwaseven
moredifficultbecauseinItalywelearnBritishEnglish.For
instance,Iusedtosayaccommodationinsteadofhousing,which
wouldalwaysresultinblankstares.”
Itwasgratifyingtobeabletosharewithsomeonefroma
differentcultureourparallelexperiences.Inthismoment,I
realizedhowmuchlivinginSpainhadchangedme.Itopenedmy
eyestoanexpansiveworld,andshowedmetheexcitementof
findingcommonalitydespitedifferentbackgrounds.Ifeel
exhilaratedtobereturningtotheU.S.withtheseinsightsand
lookforwardtoapplyingthemtomylife.

enmiespañolhablado.El3denoviembrefueeldíaenquetodo
cambió.Porelmuchovocabularioquehabíaadquirido,de
prontoteníalahabilidaddecomunicarmeconmásfluidez.
Cuandoibadecomprasocomíaenunrestaurante,sabíaqué
queríadecir.Empecéacharlarcondesconocidosmientras
esperabaelautobús.Parecíaquetodoelmundoquedaba
impresionadopormiespañol.
Apesardeestamejoraenmiespañolhablado,comosoymuy
perfeccionistamesentíacadavezmásdesalentada.
UndíahablabaconAndrés,unodemisprofesoresfavoritos.
Desdeelprincipio,Andrésmehainspirado.Evidentementele
importamuchoeléxitodesusestudiantes,ynuncahayun
momentoenqueélnoestépletóricodeentusiasmo,yporesome
sentíacómodahablandoconél.“Quierohablarcontigoporque
algomeestámolestando”,ledije.
-“Pasa”.
-“Amenudotengovergüenzademiacentoporquetodoel
mundomecontestaeninglés,dándomelasensacióndequesoy
incapazdehablarencastellano”.
Andrésmetranquilizó:“Escomúnsentirseasí,perosialguiente
contestaeninglés,usualmenteesquequierepracticarsuinglés.
Entoncescuandoestoocurre,nopasanada–puedescontinuar
hablandoenespañolmientraslaotrapersonahablaeninglés.

americana,piensa,‘¡Ah,unaamericana,salidadelaspelículas!”
Mereí.Andréstieneunaformademantenerelhumorenuna
situacióncomoesa,ymesentíamuchomejor.
Empecéavercuántohabíalogrado.Comoeldirectordel
programanosdijolasemanapasadaenlacomidadedespedida,
despuésdecuatromeseshemosllegadoasercapacesde
comunicarnosenespañolconunnivelacadémicoavanzado.
Elsábadomedirigíaalaeropuertoporlamadrugadaconmis
dospesadasmaletas.Sentíaunamezcladeemocionesmientras
admirabalaúltimavistadelaspintorescascallesdeBarcelona.
MiprimervuelofuedesdeBarcelonaaNewark.Despuésdediez
horasdeviajarsindescanso,mesenté–lánguida–enuncafé
cercadelaterminalparaesperarelúltimovuelo.Unachicade
miedadsesentóalamismamesamuyanimada.“Meencantatu
sombrero”,ledije.
Otrachicasesentó.
-“¡Gracias!Nomehabíadadocuentadequetodavíaestaba
llevándolo”,mecontestómientrassequitabasusombrerodeSan
Nicolás.

másdifícilporqueenItaliaaprendemoselinglésbritánico.Por

siempreprovocabamiradasvacías”.
Fueincreíblerelacionarmeconalguiendeotraculturaatravés
deunaexperienciacompartida.Enaquelmomento,medicuenta
dequeBarcelonamehabíacambiadomuchísimo.Abriómisojos
aunmundoexpansivo,ymerevelóqueesemocionantedescubrir
aspectoscomunesapesardelasdiferenciasinnatas.Me
entusiasmaregresaralosEstadosUnidosconestasperspicacias
paraaplicarlasamivida.
