Dear Parishioners
“Doubting Thomas” is an expression used
for people who have a hard time believing what is
sometimes evident. Today’s Gospel (John 20:24-28)
is the origin of that expression. Thomas, the Apostle, doubted that Jesus had actually risen from His
grave, “Unless l see the mark of the nails in his
hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put
my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
In today’s Gospel, Thomas refused to
believe. A week later after seeing for himself what
others had been telling him, he cried out, “My Lord
and My God.” When I was growing up, the mindset
of many families was that children should never
question their elders. In the seminary I remember
being reprimanded when I dared to question the
Rector. Since the Vatican Council, however,
respectful questioning can be looked at in a positive
way. Questioning can and oftentimes leads to
growth within a person. In our Church we must be
careful not to alienate those who have legitimate
concerns. They may not agree with nor like the
answers, but they nevertheless should be able to
have their concerns listened to. Each of us is different - some don’t feel the need to inquire, while for
others wrestling with the questions might lead to a
stronger and even more committed faith. Thomas,
the Apostle, the Doubter, was never put down by
the risen Lord. Thomas doubted. Thomas questioned. Thomas GREW into the strong Apostle that
he was.

Is Easter Later Than Usual This Year?
The answer to this is “somewhat”. As stated in last week’s Friar Column, Easter Sunday should fall on the
first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox which occurs when the sun is directly above
the earth’s equator. Based on that, Easter Sunday may occur no earlier than March 22nd and no later than
April 25th in any year. So the 20th of April is by far not the latest that Easter may occur. In fact three years ago,
it fell on April 24th. In 2008, six years ago, we celebrated this Great Sunday on March 23rd, which was the earliest since
1913 and won’t happen again until the year 2228. In 1818, Easter fell on March 22nd and it will not fall again on that date
until the year 2285. As for occurring later than usual, just three years ago, in 2011, Easter was celebrated on April 24th, the
first time for that date since 1859. April 24th will not be Easter Sunday again until the year 2095. When we take a look at
the April 25th date, (the absolute latest Easter possible), we find that it was last celebrated in 1943 and won’t happen again
until 2038. While looking at these dates is interesting, the most important fact to keep in mind is that, on this day, JESUS
CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, DIED AND ROSE FOR EACH ONE OF US. We should rejoice and celebrate this GOOD

2014 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) –
Update and Monthly Reminders
Thanks again to all Nativity parishioners
who have donated and pledged to our
BLA campaign. We have now received
$405,173, about 81% of our $500,000
goal, as of April 17. As the campaign
draws down, we still have only 19%, or just about 1 in 5
families, participating. Please consider responding at any
amount comfortable for you and your family. The reminder statements for BLA pledges are mailed midmonth. Please try to make your pledge payment prior to
the end of each month so that you will receive credit for
it on your statement the following month. Thank you for
supporting our diocesan Church!

Building Update:
The architect continues to work the final design/drawings that will be used to support the
bid process. This past week, the parish completed the loan documentation and submitted to
the Diocese for their review and approval.
If all goes as planned and after the Diocese approves our loan request, bids will go out with
an anticipated construction start date towards the end of June after school is dismissed for
the summer.
From a fund raising perspective we have received 1245 pledges totaling over $3.6 million. Cash redeemed from our
pledges since July 2013 totals almost $1 million. The building envelopes will continue to be distributed monthly which
you can utilize to make your pledge payments.
MOTHER’S DAY NOVENA
A Novena of nine Masses will be said during
the month of May for Mothers, living and
deceased. Spiritual Bouquet cards may be
found in the Church vestibule and parish
office. Mother’s names will be placed on the
Altar during the month of May. The first Novena Mass will

Mental Illness Recovery
Plan to attend a program in Nativity’s All Purpose Room,

The Knights of Columbus Frenchy Cyr Memorial Scholarship program will award six $1000 scholarships for Catholic

¡CON EL DEDO EN EL CIELO!

En este segundo Domingo de la
Pascua, cuando se sostienen en el aire los
cantos y el gozo del Aleluya, dos nuevos santos
–Juan XXIII y Juan Pablo II- suben a los
altares. Los dos, en la tierra, se fiaron de
Cristo. Como Tomás, los dos, exclamaron
“DIOS MÍO Y SEÑOR MÍO” y, a los dos, la
Iglesia los proclama Santos para que, desde el
cielo nos ayuden a descubrir a Cristo sin
exigencias hacia Él y sin pruebas de su
existencia. Hoy, el costado de Cristo, se nos
presenta más claramente cuando dos personajes de nuestro tiempo,
que fecundaron a la Iglesia con aires nuevos (Juan XXIII y JUAN
PABLO II) son iconos de bondad y de perseverancia, de vida y de
resurrección, de entrega y de generosidad. Hoy, los dos, estarán
viendo cara a cara a ese Cristo en el cual nosotros creemos y
celebramos en esta alegría pascual: ¡HA RESUCITADO! Sólo
desde la Resurrección de Cristo, los dos nuevos santos, entendieron
toda su vida.
1.A los dos, Juan XXIII y JUAN PABLO II, el encuentro
personal con Cristo –como a Tomás- les cambió la vida. Y los dos,
como sacerdotes, obispos y Papas después, tuvieron un único afán y
cometido: presentar a la Iglesia como pregonera de la alegría de la
Pascua.
Los dos, con sus peculiares personalidades pero con un
mismo fondo, contemplaron los acontecimientos de la historia de la
humanidad y la quisieron penetrar con la luz de la Verdad que es
Cristo. En Él, y desde Él, colocaron las dificultades, anhelos y
esperanzas de la Iglesia. Ante un mundo que exige racionalidad,
pruebas, eficacia y se queda en lo superficial, Juan XXIII y Juan
Pablo II, con la bondad uno y la valentía otro, recordaron a los
contemporáneos que Dios no se casa con nadie. Que seguir a Jesús
no es edulcorar la fe. Que ser fiel a la Iglesia no conlleva mostrar en
carne viva a Aquel que predicamos.
A los dos, movidos por un profundo amor a Cristo y a la
Iglesia, les une el testimonio –como a Tomás- de que Jesús es
Alguien vivo, operativo y presente en el ámbito de nuestras vidas
personales. Si a Tomás le conmovió el costado abierto de Cristo,
los agujeros de los clavos en pies y manos, a los dos Papas les
sedujo desde tiempos atrás un Jesús que les llamó a ser sacerdotes y
heraldos de su reino. Lo demás vendría por añadidura y por
exigencias del Espíritu Santo.
2.Ante una realidad que intenta hilvanar todo, con el hilo
de la apariencia, este segundo domingo de la Pascua nos ayuda a
fiarnos de Dios sin condiciones. La Iglesia no está llamada a
demostrar nada. En todo caso, la Iglesia, como depositaria de la fe
de los apóstoles, sabe perfectamente que no le faltarán detractores o
muros infranqueables a sus fuerzas y posibilidades humanas. Pero,
también es verdad, que la Iglesia sabe que no es mayor que el
Maestro y que, por lo tanto ese Maestro, no le evitará problemas
pero le dará fuerzas para soportarlos y ser ante el mundo un
recordatorio permanente de que Dios existe.
Llama la atención, en una encuesta realizada esta semana
pasada, como 6 de cada 10 ciudadanos de Europa (excepto en
Dinamarca y España) consideran que la Religión es un bien

Algo tendremos que hacer para que, ese porcentaje que no lo
ve así (entre ellos España) sientan que la Iglesia –lejos de ser
sólo institución- es un canal válido e imprescindible para
llevarnos a un encuentro real y fuerte con el Resucitado.
Que los dos nuevos Papas Santos, Juan XXIII y Juan
Pablo II, nos ayuden a dar con esa clave que posibilite abrir los
corazones cerrados, clarificar las mentes ofuscadas por el
sensacionalismo, calmar los nervios de aquellos a los cuales la
Iglesia molesta tanto o impregnar de interés por lo divino a
toda esa masa que piensa que, vivir sin Dios, es mejor y más
saludable.
Juan XXIII y Juan Pablo II…vosotros que estáis
tocando con vuestra mano y con vuestros dedos el rostro de
Cristo Resucitado, no olvidéis a esta Iglesia que ama con
locura a su Señor pero necesitada siempre de conversión, luz,
paz y valentía para hacerlo presente en este mundo. Así sea.

La Pascua florida

Así llamaba el lenguaje popular a las fiestas
pascuales. El antiguo catecismo había recogido la expresión cuando prescribía a los
creyentes "comulgar por Pascua florida". Es
un nombre plenamente justificado, porque la
Pascua coincide con la estación en la que, tras
el letargo invernal, la naturaleza vive de forma repentina y
casi inesperada, la explosión de color, formas, perfumes,
vida y belleza que denominamos primavera. "Pascua florida" une en perfecta armonía la fiesta cristiana, litúrgica, y
la experiencia natural, profana, que subyace a ella. A mi me
sugiere un problema que el clima de secularización de la
cultura impone de forma cada vez más aguda a las comunidades cristianas y una pista -lo confieso, sólo incierta y germinal- para encontrarle respuesta.
El problema es la tensión cada vez mayor entre el
ideal litúrgico (¡la Fiesta de las fiestas!); y la cruda realidad
que la reduce para la mayor parte de sus miembros, por
presión social, por necesidad real, o por las dos cosas a la
vez, a unas breves vacaciones de primavera. Las respuestas
que encuentran la mayor parte de las familias cristianas
para no renunciar a los polos de esa fuerte tensión es incluir
en el programa de las vacaciones fiestas y espectáculos tradicionales, generalmente procesiones, y asistir en condiciones mucho menos favorables que las de sus lugares de
origen a la celebración de oficios religiosos masivos y muy
poco participados.
"Pascua florida" orienta hacia otra solución de esa
tensión inevitable. La Pascua cristiana incorpora la conmemoración del Éxodo del pueblo de Israel, de las fiestas
con que pastores y agricultores saludaban el renacimiento
de la vida en las crías y en el brotar de las flores y sementeras, y la experiencia más general que supone para los
seres vivos la primavera. Una invitación a hacer aflorar a la
conciencia la necesidad de vida, de renovación que

DOS MANOS EN EL COSTADO DE CRISTO
JUAN XXIII Y JUAN PABLO SEGUNDO
Hoy, desde la bondad uno y desde su ser misionero otro,
estarán proclamando lo que hicieron verdad con sus vidas:
¡EL SEÑOR HA RESUCITADO!
Como a Tomás, también a ellos,
el Señor se les ha aparecido en la Octava de la Pascua
y, sin pretenderlo ni necesitarlo,
les dice que –su Iglesia- que une y ata en la tierra
los proclama Santos entre todos los Santos.
¡Gracias, oh Señor! ¡Gracias, Iglesia militante!
Porque, sus manos, que bendijeron y perdonaron
Porque, sus manos, que indicaron y señalaron
Porque, sus , que abrazaron y amaron
recogen nuestras oraciones y nuestros deseos
dejándolo todo a tus pies, Creador que habitas, en el cielo
¡A TI, SEÑOR, GLORIA Y ALABANZA!
Manos quisiéramos, oh Señor, de Juan XXIII
para presentar la bondad como distintivo de la Iglesia
Manos anhelamos, oh Jesús, de Juan Pablo II
para ser valientes y decididos en nuestra entrega
Manos necesitamos, oh Resucitado, de Juan XXIII
para abrir ventanas por las que entre aire fresco
Manos soñamos, oh costado abierto, de Juan Pablo II
para no doblegarnos y permanecer fieles hasta el final.
¡A TI, SEÑOR, CON ELLOS GLORIA Y ALABANZA!
Dos manos, de Juan XXIII y Juan Pablo II,
que nos acompañan desde el costado abierto de Cristo.
Porque, hoy más que nunca, ellos así lo están viviendo
Porque, es Pascua y es cierto,
que también nosotros lo vemos desde la distancia
y, sabemos, que Cristo nunca engaña.
Dos manos, que desde el corazón de la cristiandad,
nos señalaron que Jesús murió y resucitó
Dos manos que, bajo las bóvedas del cielo,
nos recordaron que Cristo es Camino, Verdad y Vida
Dos manos que, con sonrisas y fuerza,
nos alertaron del peligro de vivir sin Dios
Dos manos, Juan XXIII y Juan Pablo II,
que acogen la plegaria de toda la Iglesia,
de todos los cristianos, de todos los hombres
y mujeres de nuestro tiempo que dicen hoy y mañana:
¡SEÑOR MÍO Y DIOS MÍO!
llevamos dentro de nosotros y que la Resurrección del Señor viene a confirmar y realizar en un nivel insospechadamente más profundo;
una invitación a vivir la Pascua en esas experiencias humanas que son el encuentro con otros caminantes mientras volvemos a casa tal
vez un poco desesperanzados, la escucha de palabras que ponen en ascuas nuestro corazón, la invitación a nuestra mesa a personas que
pasan a nuestro lado, el compartir el pan que abre nuestros ojos, nos llena el corazón de alegría y nos hace decir con todo el convencimiento: "verdaderamente ha resucitado el Señor".
La celebración sosegada, ya de vuelta en nuestras comunidades cristianas, de la cincuentena pascual nos permitirá después compartir con los hermanos y hermanas creyentes la fe y la esperanza pascuales y contarnos unos a otros cómo cada uno, a su modo, hemos
reconocido o vamos reconociendo al Señor en nuestras vidas, de trabajo o de vacaciones, al compartir el pan.

¡Resucitó! La primera lección

Cuando estudiamos el Catecismo, ¿por qué
lección empezamos? Seguramente, que no
comenzamos nunca por la primera de todas,
sino que llegamos a ella después de muchos
días. Lo cual es un error, desde luego. ¿Cuál
es la lección primera? Sin discurrir un momento, digamos que es la Resurrección de Jesús. Eso que decimos en el Credo: y al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos es
lo primero de todo.
El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica nos lo recuerda hoy
al afirmar que la resurrección constituye la confirmación de todo
lo que Jesucristo hizo y enseñó. Con estas palabras no hace sino
repetirnos lo del apóstol San Pablo:
- Si Cristo no resucitó, es vana nuestra predicación, es inútil
vuestra fe.
Una vez más que volvemos sobre este misterio, fundamento de todo lo que creemos y esperamos y amamos, porque
no vamos a amar a un muerto que nos habría engañado.
Si se cree en la Resurrección, hay que admitir todo el
Evangelio y hay que darse a Jesucristo.
Si no se cree en la Resurrección es inútil insistir en ninguna otra verdad.
Los cristianos de la Iglesia Oriental de Europa, sobre
todo en Rusia, celebran la Resurrección de una manera espléndida. Durante todo el sábado, el día se pasa triste, muy triste.
En el templo aparece sólo el sepulcro sellado, con Jesucristo
muerto dentro de la roca. Pero al anochecer, las calles empiezan
a iluminarse con el esplendor de antorchas y más antorchas que
se dirigen hacia la iglesia. Al llegar la nutrida procesión, se abre
la puerta y aparece el sacerdote vestido de blanco, con un manto
flotante, lujoso, lleno de gracia y majestad. En su mano, el crucifijo que levanta en alto, mientras canta jubiloso por tres veces:
-¡Cristo ha resucitado! ¡Cristo a resucitado! ¡Cristo ha resucitado!...
La multitud responde con gritos a cada proclama:
-¡En verdad que ha resucitado! ¡En verdad que ha resucitado!
¡En verdad que ha resucitado!...
Entran todos en el templo, espléndidamente iluminado,
como quien entra en la gloria. Y llega un momento en que el
coro invita a todos cantando: - Abracémonos unos a otros,
llamémonos hermanos, perdonemos a los que nos odian y cantemos todos juntos: ¡Cristo ha resucitado de entre los muertos!

En este momento estalla el júbilo incontenible. Todos se
besan y abrazan, ricos y pobres, grandes y pequeños. El que
da el beso saluda:
- ¡Cristo ha resucitado!
Y responde el que lo recibe:
- ¡Sí, Cristo ha resucitado!
No acaba aquí este grito de triunfo. Durante los
días pascuales seguirá en la vida como normal este saludo,
al encontrarse dos personas
- ¡Cristo ha resucitado!
- ¡Sí, Cristo ha resucitado!
Así se celebraba la Resurrección en Rusia, y Dios
quiera que se haya renovado para no suprimirse ya nunca.
Bella la función. Pero, sobre todo, profunda en su significado, porque resume todo lo que es nuestra fe, nuestra
esperanza y nuestro amor.
Sin el amor a Jesucristo no se explica este gozo.
Sin esperanza de tener esta misma gloria del Señor, tampoco se comprende esta alegría.
Sin fe en todo lo que creemos, resulta ininteligible tal celebración.
La celebración pascual se convierte entonces en
una vivencia extraordinaria de esas tres virtudes --la fe, la
esperanza, la caridad-- que impulsan y activan todo el organismo sobrenatural de la vida cristiana.
Nosotros, siguiendo el Catecismo de la Iglesia
Católica, sacamos todas las consecuencias. Nuestra vida
entera es un vivir según Jesucristo Resucitado. Esto, cada
día, siempre. El domingo, en especial, renovamos con la
Eucaristía la celebración pascual. Porque sentimos, experimentamos y vivimos todo el misterio de nuestra fe. Esto es
de cada día, y no hace falta estar en tiempo pascual para
recordarlo y vivirlo.
¿Cristo resucitó, venciendo la muerte y todas las
fuerzas de la naturaleza? Entonces, Jesucristo está sobre
todo lo creado. Jesucristo es Dios.
¿Cristo resucitó, cumpliendo su palabra? Entonces, le creemos a pie juntillas. Era lo que Él decía. Era el Salvador.
¿Cristo resucitó? Entonces, hemos quedado santificados y
salvados, porque ha podido mandarnos desde el seno de
Dios el Espíritu Santo.
¿Cristo ha resucitado? Entonces, somos con Él hijos de Dios, porque nos ha metido en su misma vida.
¿Cristo ha resucitado? Entonces, nosotros también resucitaremos, porque estamos unidos a Él en un mismo cuerpo,
como los miembros con la cabeza.
¿Cristo ha resucitado? Entonces, nuestra vida está escondida con Cristo en Dios, y llevamos ya en la tierra la vida
del Cielo.
¿Seguimos con las preguntas? Haríamos una lista
interminable. Pero, vamos a la última, que es muy sencilla
de hacer, y ojalá sepamos responderla todos: -¿Sabemos
bien la primera lección del Catecismo?....
