Ha visitado el ferry ‘Albayzin’ para recordar su nacimiento, hace 35 años, a bordo de otro buque de la compañía.
YAIZA MARINA, THE GIRL BORN AT SEA
She has visited the ferry “Albayzin” to remember her birth,
35 years ago on board another ship from the company.

“Nació una niña a bordo del Manuel Soto”. El
Diario de Cádiz se hacía eco, el 4 de noviembre de 1980, del nacimiento de la segunda hija de la familia Domínguez Berzunce
a bordo del ferry de Trasmediterranea que
realizaba la travesía Canarias-Cádiz, con el
capitán Ignacio González García al mando.
El matrimonio residía en Gran Canaria por
trabajo, pero quería que Yaiza naciera en
Cádiz, su ciudad de origen. Habían comprado los pasajes para viajar con antelación,
ya que el nacimiento estaba previsto para
finales de noviembre, pero las contracciones empezaron nada más subir al barco y el
médico a bordo tuvo que atender el parto.
Sus padres habían pensado que se llamase
Bárbara, pero “el hecho de haber nacido en
el barco hizo que me pusieran Yaiza Marina,
que significa princesa que viene del mar. Mi
nombre es una forma de recordar siempre
donde nací”, explica. Yaiza está recopilando
lo sucedido en la travesía. Tiene los documentos que acreditan su nacimiento y espera contactar con Manuel Pérez Luna, el
médico que atendió el parto. “Gracias a él,
hoy puedo contarlo”. ■

The Diario de Cádiz (Cadiz Daily) reported on
the 4th November 1980 of the birth of the
second Domínguez Berzunce daughter on
board the Trasmediterranea ferry, which sailed the Canaries-Cadiz crossing, with Captain
Ignacio González García in command. The
couple lived in Gran Canaria due to work, but
wanted Yaiza to be born in Cadiz, their hometown. They had bought their tickets in advance, as the baby’s due date was scheduled for
late November, but the contractions started
no sooner had they stepped foot on the boat
and the doctor on board had to deliver the
baby. Her parents had thought about naming
her Bárbara, but “the fact that I’d been born
on the boat made them change my name
to Yaiza Marina, which means princess who
comes from the sea. My name is a way of
always remembering where I was born, ”she
explains. Yaiza is collating information about
what happened during the crossing. She has
the documents proving her birth and hopes
to contact Manuel Pérez Luna, the doctor
who attended the birth. “Thanks to him, I’m
here today to tell the tale.” ■

THE BOAT ‘MANUEL SOTO’
Bautizado como Manuel Soto en recuerdo a uno de los presidentes de
la compañía, el 15 de febrero de 1975 se procedió a su botadura en los
astilleros de Unión Naval de Levante (Valencia). Comenzó navegando
en Baleares y, a finales de 1976, se incorpora a la línea BarcelonaCádiz-Canarias, que después sería Cádiz-Canarias, alternando con su
buque gemelo J.J. Sister. A finales de 1983 volvió a navegar en Baleares. Fuera de las comunicaciones marítimas regulares, el ferry Manuel
Soto realizó dos viajes de turismo por la cuenca del Mediterráneo
occidental: uno, en Navidad de 1981, y otro, en octubre de 1983. En
junio de 1985 coincidió en el puerto de Santa Cruz de La Palma con
los buques Ciudad de La Laguna y Villa de Agaete, como hoteles flotantes, con motivo de la inauguración del Astrofísico del Roque de los
Muchachos. El 4 de noviembre del citado año, el Manuel Soto inauguró
la línea Génova-Canarias, con escalas en Palma de Mallorca, Málaga,
Cádiz, Santa Cruz de Tenerife y Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, alternando
con el ferry J.J. Sister. En mayo de 1986, ambos buques retomaron la
línea Cádiz-Canarias. En 1992 se vendió a otra naviera.

Named the Manuel Soto in memory of one of the company presidents,
on 15th February 1975 it was launched at the ship makers Unión Naval de Levante (Valencia). It first started sailing in the Balearics and, in
late 1976 joined the Barcelona-Cadiz-Canaries line, which would later
become Cadiz-Canaries, alternating with her twin boat, J. J. Sister. In
late 1983, it returned to sailing in the Balearics. In addition to regular
maritime services, the Manuel Soto ferry undertook two tourist voyages
around the western basin of the Mediterranean: one at Christmas 1981,
the other in October 1983. In June 1985, in the port of Santa Cruz de
La Palma, it joined the boats Ciudad de La Laguna and Villa de Agaete as
floating hotels for the inauguration of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. On the 4th November of that year, the Manuel Soto opened
the Genoa-Canaries line, with stops in Palma de Mallorca, Malaga, Cadiz,
Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, alternating with
the ferry J. J. Sister. In May 1986, both boats re-joined the Cadiz-Canaries
line. In 1992, it was sold to another shipping company
