 How To Play With Your Child
You may think that playing with your child is silly. You are not a kid and kids should play
with other kids. Yes, this is true, but you can offer your child a great deal of learning
experiences as you play with them! To make play meaningful, you first must know your
role in the play. As you are playing, keep in mind these simple ideas. They can be used
in different areas of play within your home or even at the park!
1. Follow your child’s lead
a. If your child is playing with the dinosaurs, play dinosaurs too. Ask them to
give you the dinosaur they want you to use. Ask them to let you know
some important things about where the dinosaurs live and what they say.
Also be sure to match your child. If they are being loud then you should be
loud as well. Sometimes being loud is a good thing. The child is able to
show different emotions as they play.
2. Play without distractions
a. When you are playing you should turn the TV off. Your child should be the
number one priority at this time so try not to take any calls or answer any
text messages. Use this time to let your child know that play time together
is important. Also make sure that you and your child stay in character. Do
not start talking about what you are going to do after play or talking about
running some errands. Play Time is Imagination Time!
3. Ask open ended questions
a. Ask questions such as, “What’s happening here? Or Where are we going
next?” Open ended questions give your child an opportunity to give you in
depth answers. Yes or no questions are not giving your child an
opportunity to think and express themselves with details. Letting your child
give details can expand your child’s imagination.
4. Play at your child’s level
a. Sitting on the floor and interacting is very different then standing next to
your child as they are playing. Let them know that you want to be down at
their level and play with them.
5. The more fun you are having with them and the more that you get into it,
the more fun your child will have. Their imagination will run wild.
The most important thing to remember is have fun!

a. Si tu hijo juega con dinosaurios, tu también juega con dinosaurios. Pídeles que te dén
el dinosaurio que quieren que uses. Pídeles que te cuenten algún dato importante de
los dinosaurios: donde viven y que dicen. También asegúrate de imitarlos, si ellos
hacen ruido, tu también hazlo. A veces el hacer ruido es bueno. Los niños son capazes
de demostrar una variedad de emociones mientras juegan.
2. Juegen sin distracciones
a. Cuando estén jugando apaga el televisor. Tu hijo deberá ser la prioridad en ésos
momentos, así que trata de no contestar llamadas ni mensajes de texto. Utiliza ésos
momentos para que tu hijo sepa que jugar con él es importante. También asegúrate de
que tanto tú como tu hijo se mantengan dentro de su personaje. No hables de lo que
vas a hacer despues de que terminen de jugar o de otras cosas que tengas pendientes.
El juego es el tiempo para la imaginación!
3. Haz preguntas abiertas
a. Haz preguntas tales como: ¿Que es lo que está sucediendo? Ó ¿A donde vamos
ahora? Las preguntas abiertas le dan la oportunidad a tu hijo de contestar en forma
detallada. Las preguntas que requieren un Sí ó No como respuesta, no le dan a tu hijo
la oportunidad de pensar y expresarse con más detalles. El permitir que tu hijo conteste
con detalles ayuda a expander su imaginación.
4. Juega al nivel de tu hijo
a. El sentarte en el suelo para interactuar con ellos es muy diferente a estar parado cerca
de ellos mientras juegan. Deja que vean que quieres estar a su nivel y jugar con ellos.
5. Entre más te diviertas con ellos y más te adentres en el juego, más se divertirán. Su
imaginación no tendrá límites.
¡Lo más importante que debes recordar es que se diviertan!
