My brothers and sisters in Christ, This week 30 people are travelling to Lourdes and Rome to give thanks for the 175 years of this parish. Most of the group are parishioners of Saint Mary’s. Others are relatives or friends who wanted to join us. We are blessed to have such a great group. We are travelling to Lourdes because our Parish is under the patronage of Mary, the Immaculate Conception. We will travel to the small town where in 1858, a young girl, Bernadette Soubirous, was visited by a woman 18 times. On one of those visits, on March 25th, the woman told Bernadette “I am the Immaculate Conception.” This was only four years after the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed. We than plan to travel to Rome to pray in thanksgiving at the tombs of the Apostles. Please pray for us as we will pray for you. We will be praying for your families and for all those who are sick and looking for healing. I will return at the end of next week. - Father Michael PLEASE PRAY FOR. . . Anne Wong, who died and was buried from our parish this week. May she rest in peace. All our beloved dead. May they rest in peace. The Catholic Church in Iraq Christians in the Middle East Efforts to rebuild the church in Haiti Rita - for health If you know someone who needs prayers, please stop by the rectory or call and leave your prayer intentions with Mary. NEW ASSIGNMENT FOR FR. AUGUSTINE ANDA Father Augustine Anda, who was staying with us in recent months, has been assigned to St. Theresa of Liseux Parish in Billerica. We thank him for his presence at St. Mary’s and pray that his fruitful ministry be blessed at St. Theresa’s. FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Adoration of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament begins every Friday following the 12:10 Mass. The Blessed Sacrament is now exposed until 7:00PM. This change is answering the request of parishioners who wish to spend more time in adoration. Please come spend some time in front of the Lord and spread the word to all who wish to come and pray. THIS WEEK’S BULLETIN COVER Moses and the burning bush This mosaic at San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy, depicts Moses removing his sandals after the Lord speaks to him from the burning bush. In Luke’s Gospel today, we hear: That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called out “Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” MASS INTENTIONS The following Mass Intentions are scheduled this week: Saturday, November 6 4:00 PM - Mary Gustafson & Frank Utley - Birthday Anniv. Thank you for your generosity. This week’s second collection is for the Campaign for Human Development. Next week’s second collection (November 14th) is the Special Monthly Collection. ST. VINCENT DePAUL In today’s Gospel, we find that God is a God of the living, and this is indeed the core of our hope. Jesus has risen and is with us, therefore, at no time should we be without hope for the future. As you place your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them. Jesus, our hope, guide us in our decisions, guard us in our choices, root us in your words. Amen. ANNUAL ST. VINCENT DePAUL APPEAL The annual St. Vincent DePaul appeal in underway. If you did not receive a copy of the Annual Report in the mail, please pick up a copy at the church entrances so you can respond as your means allow with donations to this charitable ministry here at St. Mary’s. THE BOOK OF THE DEAD We invite everyone to record the names of the deceased in the Book of the Dead placed near the baptismal font. We will pray for those listed in the Book throughout the month of November. IMAGES OF LIGHT: ST. To you all flesh must come because of wicked deeds. We are overcome by our sins; it is you who pardon them. Happy is the man you choose, and bring to dwell in your courts. May we be filled with the good things of your house, the holy things of your temple! With awe-inspiring deeds of justice you answer us, O God our savior, The hope of all the ends of the earth and of the distant seas. You set the mountains in place by your power, you who are girt with might; You still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves and the tumult of the peoples. And the dwellers at the earth’s ends are in fear at your marvels; the farthest east and west you make resound with joy. You have visited the land and watered it; greatly have you enriched it. God’s watercourses are filled; you have prepared the grain. Thus have you prepared the land: drenching its furrows, breaking up its clods, Softening it with showers, blessing its yield. You have crowned the year with your bounty, and your paths overflow with a rich harvest; the untilled meadows overflow with it, and rejoicing clothes the hills. The fields are garmented with flocks and the valleys blanketed with grain. They shout and sing for joy. CARDINAL O’MALLEY VISIT Cardinal Sean was scheduled to visit Saint Mary’s on November 21st. He was planning to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving to bring our Anniversary celebrations to a close. Pope Benedict has other plans for the Cardinal that day. Two weeks ago, he called all the Cardinals of the Church to a consistory in Rome for the creation of 24 new Cardinals. The consistory is scheduled for that same Sunday. We will reschedule the Cardinal’s visit at a later time. ATTENTION 4:00 PM MASS - November 20th Cardinal O’Malley asked Saint Mary’s to host a retreat led by a well-known Franciscan priest, Padre Ignacio Larragnara, on the weekend of November 20-21. As mentioned above, the Cardinal must travel to Rome but the retreat will still be taking place. As we have done a couple of times in the past, we will move the Saturday 4:00 PM Vigil Mass to the downstairs church. We will reserve parking throughout the day to insure you can park the car on that day. If you have trouble with stairs, we encourage you to attend one of the Sunday Masses instead of Saturday. Thank you for your patience with this matter. MASS TRANSLATION This section of the bulletin has taken apart the Mass to help describe what we are doing and why we do it. The last few months have focused on the first part of the Mass - the Liturgy of the Word. We are now focusing on the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This week we discuss the: PRIEST PRAYER AND INCENSATION After mixing the water and wine, the priest prays in a quiet voice a humble request that God may receive our offering. Slightly bowing, the priest prays: Lord God, we ask you to receive us and be pleased with the sacrifice we offer you with humble and contrite hearts. This text comes from the Book of Daniel 3:39-40 where it is prayed by Azariah who, missing the spiritual sacrifices of the temple, realizes that it is the spiritual sacrifice which best pleases God. The priest then incenses the altar. At Saint Mary’s, we use incense at every 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM Masses as well as all solemnity Masses. Incense is a traditional symbol of prayer arising to god (Psalm 141:2 and Rev. 8:3-4). Thus the gifts of the altar may be incensed as a sign of the “Church’s offering and prayer going up to God”. The priest and faithful present at the Mass are also incensed since they are to unite themselves and their prayers with the gifts which will be offered in the Eucharistic Prayer. LAST MONTH’S PILGRIMMAGES This Saturday we completed our visits to the parishes that began as missions of Saint Mary’s. We started out at Saint Charles Borromeo Parish in prayer. Father Copp and a parishioner, Maureen Gordon, welcomed us and made a presentation on the history and architecture of Saint Charles. We then traveled Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted where Father DiPerri, Jim Gallagher, Paige Vanderwater, and other parishioners provided us with a great spread of food and another presentation. From there we went over to Concord where we prayed at Saint Bernard’s Church, and then completed our day with a visit to Saint Jude’s. At each of the seven parishes established by Saint Mary, we prayed for all their parishioners both living and dead. It was a great way to spend time with each other and learn more about the great history and the works that God still performs in our midst. Thanks to all who participated as well as all those who showed us hospitality. BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN Thanks to all who participated in the Baby Bottle Campaign! It’s time to collect the bottles. This change will support the ministry of A Woman’s Concern. Services that they provide at no cost, because of the generosity of many, include pregnancy tests, ultrasound exams, medical consultations, parenting and adoption preparation, on-going friendship, and long-term practical support. If you forgot to bring your bottle today, you can bring it next week or drop it off at the rectory.
