XXXIII Domingo Tiempo Ordinario

Hoy es el último domingo antes de la culminación del año con la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Las
lecturas son muy miedosas. En los últimos meses hemos estado escuchando lo que tenemos que hacer
para ser verdaderos discípulos de Jesús. Las lecturas de hoy nos hablan sobre el fin del mundo y lo que
va a pasar con los que eligen permanecer alejados de Dios. Daniel dice que viene un tiempo de angustia
como nunca lo hemos visto. Jesús también habla de ese momento, el sol se oscurecerá, la luna no
brillará, las estrellas caerán del cielo y todo el universo se conmoverá. Estas secciones de Daniel y del
Nuevo Testamento están escritas en el género literario que llamamos escritura apocalípticas. Esta
utilización del género de poesía y prosa, nos lleva a nuestra imaginación y a nuestras emociones. El
propósito es de asustar a la gente a reconocer los horrores del pecado y la devastación que causa. El fin
del mundo no es un truco, sino una realidad y algo muy miedoso. Pero, ¿es el fin del mundo miedoso
para todos? No si ponemos atención a estas lecturas. Daniel le dice a su pueblo, que las personas que
permanecen fieles a Dios, escaparán. Los sabios brillarán y los que enseñan a otros la justicia serán
como las estrellas para siempre. Jesús dice que el Hijo del hombre enviará a sus ángeles para reunir a
sus elegidos desde los rincones de la tierra, hasta el extremo del cielo. Cuando escuchamos estas
lecturas nos podríamos asustar, pero como cristianos tenemos que estar más preocupados con nuestro
compromiso con Dios. Si estamos comprometidos con el Señor, no tenemos ninguna razón para temer el
final de los tiempos. Sabemos esto. De hecho, todos los días oramos por la fuerza para permanecer
comprometidos con Dios, no importa a cual crisis nos enfrentemos. Hacemos esto cada vez que decimos
el Padrenuestro. Esta oración termina así: "No nos dejes caer en tentación y líbranos del mal" Lo que
estamos diciendo es: "No permitas que seamos tentados a dejarte Señor. Protégenos de la maldad que
nos puede destruir. Ayúdanos a ser santos, comprometidos a ti". No debemos de tenerle miedo al fin del
mundo. Tampoco debemos de temer nuestra muerte. A lo que debemos de tenerle miedo es a dejar que
el mundo nos arrastre con sus promesas falsas y entonces rechazar a Dios. Eso sí que es aterrador.
Invite a sus familiares, amigos, vecinos y compañeros de trabajo a participar de la Santa Misa
cada domingo.

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today is the last Sunday before the culmination of the liturgical year with the Feast of Christ
the king. The readings are very scary. Over the last several months we had been listening to what we
need to do to be true disciples of Jesus. The readings today talked about the end of the world and what
will happen to those that choose to stay away from God. Daniel says that a time is coming which will
be unsurpassed in distress. Jesus also talks about this time when he says that the sun will be darkened,
the moon will not give off light, the stars will fall from the skies and the powers in the heavens will be
shaken. These sections of Daniel and of the New Testament are written in the literary genre we call
apocalyptic writing. This genre use poetry and prose, and engages the imagination and emotions. It is
meant to scare people into recognizing the horrors of sin and the devastation that sin causes. The end
of the world is not make believe, and it will be a scary time. But is it a scary time for everyone? Not
according to our readings. Daniel is told that his people, the people who remain faithful to God, shall
escape. The wise shall shine brightly and those who lead others to justice shall be like the stars forever.
Jesus says that the Son of Man will send out his angels to gather his elect from the end of the earth and
the end of the sky. When we hear these reading we could be scared, but as Christians we should be
more concerned with our commitment to God. If we are committed to the Lord, we have no reason to
fear the end of time. We know this. In fact, every day we pray for the strength to remain committed to
God no matter what crisis we face. We do this every time we say the Lord’s Prayer. Remember this
prayer ends with: “And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” What we are saying is,
“Do not allow us to be tempted to leave you Lord. Protect us from the evil that can destroy us. Help us
to be holy, set aside for you.” We do not fear the end of time. Nor do we fear the end of our own time,
our death. What we do fear is giving in to the world and rejecting God. Now that’s scary. Invite
friends and family to join us for Holy Mass on Sundays.
