EFC -- Sunday, August 31, 2014 -- God dies! We continue to explore the foundations of English Fellowship Church; taking three months to look at what is at the "core” of what we believe. Keeping the rhythm of a two-word summary, EFC - Domingo, 31 de agosto 2014 – Dios muere! We begin at a point in the story when God was living in a human body for the first time. (Jn 18:1) For the disciples, it would have been an unexpected twist in an extremely intense day. There had been chaos -- with tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people packing the roads to sing and shout Jesus' praise. There was the intimate yet awkward gesture of Jesus washing the disciples' feet -leading to the Passover meal...the highlight of the enormous annual Jewish celebration. Where we pick up the story, all that was over and they were making their way out of Jerusalem... although the Disciples likely weren't sure why. As they walked through the darkness, the “ human” part of Jesus must have felt like He was dreaming. With the number of people who went to Jerusalem for Passover that year hundreds of thousands of animals would have been sacrificed in The Temple. Over the years, a channel had been dug to drain so much blood. The channel ran into the Kidron Valley just outside the city...where Jesus and His Disciples crossed that night. A small creek ran through the valley -- and during Passover it flowed with blood. You could have smelled the blood as much as you could have seen it. Jesus would have been very aware of it as He walked along and then crossed over the blood running through the valley. Blood. It was at the center of Passover -- the annual celebration to help Jews remember when God rescued their ancestors from 400 years of horrific conditions in Egypt. God had told them to identify (and protect) themselves by putting lamb's blood on the doors to their homes. Death “passed over” any home with the blood -- but hit every first-born male in every home without the blood. For 15-hundred years since then, Jews sacrificed a "Passover lamb" in memory. Historians say the year we’re studying, more people than ever went to Jerusalem for the celebration -so more animals than ever would have been slaughtered. As Jesus walked out of Jerusalem, the smell of blood and dead animals would have hung in the air. It was a graphic picture of what was coming for Him -- and why: sacrifice as The Passover Lamb for any and all who come to see Him that way (1 Cor 5:7)! By God's design: "without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins." (Heb 9:22, ESV) That night, blood would have touched all of Jesus' senses...as He crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples "and entered a grove of olive trees…Jesus had often gone there with his disciples." (Juan 18: 1-2) A few people owned property just outside of Jerusalem. Apparently Jesus knew someone who had an olive grove with a garden, known as Gethsemane. The Disciples knew it was special for Jesus; He connected with God there like few other places (Lk 2:39; Jn 18:2). That night Jesus needed to be there more than ever! He wanted James, John and Peter very close as He did that. He told the other eight, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” (Mt 26:36, Mk14:32) Something in that tends to get overlooked – or at least downplayed: Jesus was going to pray. Why would Jesus pray? I would add, “Why would Jesus pray to God if He was God?” -- and if He knew what was coming, why pray? I believe a huge part of the answer gives a crucial insight into prayer. Rather than asking why He would pray, I would ask, “Why wouldn’t He?” Jesus was “The Son” of the “Father, Son and Holy Spirit” that eternally make up the “ Three-Yet-One Living-God.” Communion and communication is a beautiful, eternal reality among them...and among many other things, this scene shows us how they do that through prayer. Prayer is more than simply turning to God with personalized versions of, "Give us this day our daily bread..." Jesus knew what was coming that night -and more than anything else, He desperately needed to know God was with Him! This has helped me answer the question, “ Why should I pray?" "Why wouldn’t I?” If The Only Living Eternal God invites me to "communicate" and even "commune" with Him, why wouldn't I? 3 Unas pocas personas poseían propiedad en las afueras de Jerusalén. 4 Scenes like this show me I need to continue to learn to see my prayers as more than, I want you to…(dot-dot-dot).” "Prayer" for Jesus was: "More than anything “God, else God, I want You!” We begin to see that as He took Peter, James and John farther into Gethsemane...and "became deeply troubled, anguished and distressed.” (Mt 26:37, Mk 14:33) That addresses something crucial that appears in various ways all through the Bible: because God is God, He knows everything that is coming... and because He is Father, He feels them intensely when they happen! One of the more commonly misunderstood pictures of that in The Bible says something like, “The LORD was sorry he had ever made (people)...” (Gen 6:6). Rather than, "The Lord was sorry..." the original language was more like, "The Lord had sorrow..." I don’t believe God was thinking, “If I would have seen this coming I never would have made them.” I believe God was thinking, “I know how this is going to go; I designed it... but seeing it lived out -- right here and right now -- is REALLY hard!” For me, that explains why, even though He was (and is) God, “Jesus became deeply troubled, anguished and distressed.” Many things about Jesus' claim to be God rocked Jewish thinking. The thought of God feeling anything that intensely would have been beyond crazy to them! I cannot imagine what it was like for Peter, James and John when Jesus admitted to them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death.” (Mt 26:38, Mc 14:34) Deep, inner agony...so intense it felt like it was going to kill Him. When Jesus told Peter, James and John, “ Stay here…” it meant more than, “Wait in this spot.” It was also emotional and relational; like, “ Stick with me, guys,” and, “I need you to feel some of what I am feeling.” 5 Profunda, agonía interna... tan intensa que parecía que iba a matarlo. That was underlined by the way He added, “ Keep watch with Todo ello fue destacado por la manera que añadió: "¡Vigilad conmigo. "(Mc 14:34) me.” (Mk 14:34) That was more fully like, "Hang in there with me; Eso fue más plenamente como, "Aguanta ahí conmigo; keep caring… because my soul is crushed with grief to the point of death." (Mt 26:38, Mk 14:34) As part of the eternal Trinity, Jesus had seen people die in all kinds of ways throughout history; some slipping quietly and painlessly from life...others in extreme and even extended agony. Jesus knew He was just hours away from experiencing death Himself! He wanted someone with Him in the face of that; not to give answers or advice; just to be there! He was teaching and modelling that when things turn hard or ugly, His followers need one another. At the same time, this scene shows human presence is not enough! (Jesus) went a little farther...and fell face down to the ground and prayed. (Mt 26:39; Mk 14:35; Lk 22:41) The word the writers used for "fell face down" carried a sense of throwing Himself to the ground. The “traditional” Jewish way of praying was to stand, hands lifted up. Someone would only go face down in extreme agony! 6 Strongly implied in the word for “pray” was: “prayed to The Only Living Eternal God!” Turning to God is like Jesus was asking, “ God, will You stay with me -- even when I am at my worst?” Looking at how Jesus turned to God here reminds me how I am programmed to be more like Adam; how the “natural” tendency I picked up from Adam and what he did in Eden is to turn away from God! Seeing Jesus in Gethsemane like this gives me freedom to feel things intensely…even ugly things -and to turn to God with them! A growing voice in "theology" tries to explain the hard things in life by saying there are things God does not see coming. It says God is able to respond perfectly...but He doesn't know everything about the future. I don't see that in The Bible. I see God saying (in all kinds of ways), "Hard things - sometimes horrific things happen. I have always known everything about every one of them. I am here to hold you when they do!" That fits with the way Jesus prayed, “Abba Father..." Mark’s use of both names combined tenderness and intimacy with respect. "Abba" can be translated "Daddy" -- but it is more fully like, "My Daddy can beat up your Daddy!" God is tender and loving...precisely the way you need Him to be -- and He says, "I have this under perfect control!" Jesus knew that better than anyone -- yet the reality of the moment was so intense, it was almost more than He could handle: Abba Father, everything is possible for you; if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me.” (Lk 22:42; Mk 14:35-36; Mt 26:39) Most modern versions show Jesus in three different times of prayer that night. Esto, 7 the first, lasted about an hour. These are the only words recorded. That means a lot of His prayer came in the form of weeping, sweating and groaning. One of the lessons our culture could learn when it comes to prayer is to speak less, to not worry as much about finding the 'right' words -to allow our hearts to feel and groan more… and to wait longer in stillness, whether we find what we consider “an answer” to our prayer or not. Beyond that, do you think God heard Jesus and thought anything like, “Don’t be such a whiner!” Of course not! However, many people consciously or subconsciously believe God thinks things like that about them! God wants us to find freedom (and safety) to ask Him anything. The apostle Paul learned to "...cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” (Rom 8:15, NIV) Do not miss how biblical and Christ-like that really is. In Gethsemane Jesus cried "Abba Father" The writer of Hebrews said Jesus "understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do..." (Heb 4:15) Jesus even faced death... and because He defeated it, the writer of Hebrews added we can now "come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most." (Heb 4:16, NLT) Jesus had to find that with God...because at the point in history when Jesus "needed it most" He “found the disciples asleep. la primera, duró aproximadamente una hora. He said to Peter, ‘Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.’” (Mt 26:40-41; Mk 14: 37-38; Lk 22:40, 46) Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer. When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say. (Mt 26:42-42; Mk 14: 39-40) I don’t believe that was a scolding or some kind of “guilt trip” for the Disciples. The phrase “couldn’t keep their eyes open” had to do with more than just physical exhaustion. Most of you have likely lived enough to know there is something unique about emotional and/or spiritual exhaustion. Glance back over what The Disciples had been through that week and ask yourself how exhausted you would be. 8 Él dijo a Pedro: "¿No pudiste velar conmigo ni siquiera una hora? Y no sabían qué decir. I can’t help but wonder if at least in part Miren cómo me enfrento a eso Jesus was saying, “Guys, I am exhausted, too; completely spent. I am going to die tonight! Watch how I face that so you know what to do when your time comes! para que sepan qué hacer cuando llegue su momento! Jesus was facing the coming reality of “the cup.” “The cup” Jesus was being handed was full of all sins ever! If we could let ourselves really think about all the ways sin is playing out around the world in just ten seconds, there wouldn’t be enough tissues to soak up our tears or buckets to hold the vomit. Jesus was just a few hours from facing not just sins from ten seconds Jesús se enfrenta a la realidad de la llegada de "la copa". Jesús estaba a tan sólo unas horas de enfrentar no sólo los pecados de diez segundos 9 but all the sins throughout all of history. That is what He was realizing during this time in Gethsemane. More horrific than that, He knew that when He “took it,” part of its reality would bring Him to the point where, for the only time in eternity, He would know what it feels like to be completely, entirely alone. He would reach out to God, and come up empty! Jesus confronted what “alone” really is -- to the fullest extent of the word! He came out the other end willing to literally do anything to make sure no one should ever have to be that alone again -if they will only trust Him, the way He trusted God! Not long after experiencing absolute loneliness -- and death He promised, “Surely I am with you always.” (Mt 28:20) Matthew (27:51) said the moment Jesus died, the massive curtain in The Temple was split from top to bottom. That curtain had stood as the barrier between the people and the presence of The Only Living Eternal God. Jesus' death destroyed that barrier. Faith in Him and what He did not only removes the barrier to God's presence, it makes the way for Holy Spirit to bring that presence into anyone who believes! Because of the mystery of The Trinity, that is how Jesus is able to fulfill His promise to "be with (us) always!" Catch the order of this next part: (Jesus) went to pray a third time, saying the same things again. Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. (Mt 26:44; Lc 22:43-44) Scholars and doctors debate what happened in Jesus’ body. Whatever it was, most agree He was as close to physical “hell” as you can get on earth. Notice: before that happened, "An angel appeared and strengthened Him" (Lk 22:43)! Even with the presence of and strength from an angel, Jesus’ agony went to a whole new level! That can only make sense if you have had that kind of time with God where you find strength – yet keep weeping! That can only be explained by the supernatural work of Holy Spirit! Jesus prayed different versions of the same thing three times, lasting through half the night. At first, for hours, the “human part of Him” didn’t want what the “God part of Him” could see coming. Jesus hit the point where He was able to say, “What I need more than anything else is to know God is with me! If Jesus needed that, how much more do we -- for how many different reasons? Jesus even hit the point where He was able to say, "I said what I would prefer...but I want what You want for me! Your will be done -- not mine!" Once He hit that point He was able to say to His Disciples: “...look—the time has come...Up, let’s be going…!” (Mt 26:45-46; Mk 14:41-42; Lk 22:45) There was no longer fear in His voice; nothing like, “Well, I guess I gotta do this after all…” There was confidence. Courage. Certainty. Then He turned intensely, intentionally and honestly to God. I want to continue to learn what that means …especially when I am frustrated, frightened, confused, anxious or angry. However, when I am upset, God is often the last one I turn to. I want to get better at quickly turning to Him with whatever is going on in my heart. Using a graphic picture from Adam in Eden, it is like saying to God, “I’m not afraid to be here naked with You.” Say, for example, something triggers unhealthy anger. As soon as I recognize it, I need to pray something like, “God, I realize what I am feeling right now is ugly…but I am really angry. I need to know You are right here, right now! Part of me really wants to yell at this person; help me say the right thing, to not say anything at all, or to take a deep breath and walk away.” Sometimes I need to make extended time to wrestle with what is going on inside me: close my door, turn my cell phone off, close the curtains…and for as long as it takes: intensely, intentionally and honestly invite Holy Spirit to penetrate my deepest thoughts and emotions. I don't have time to get into the psychology of this -- but when I dissect, say, frustration with Beth, I may find deep-rooted anger with something my Dad did or didn't do when I was a kid. Really facing things like that can be brutal! feo, persistente, honesto fue una lucha. Realmente, enfrentan cosas como estas puede ser brutal! showed it is okay to pray, “God, this is incredibly hard. I don’t know if I can do this.” Jesus showed how sometimes our prayer need to be something like, “It looks like I’m not going to get to go around this; please get me through it!” Seeing what Jesus did in Gethsemane helps me find freedom to pour my heart out to God; to be real and intense – and sometimes cry and sweat and groan. Sometimes I find peace fairly quickly. Sometimes it takes a while. I am less comfortable than ever with a phrase that I heard early and often in church: “God answers all prayers; sometimes the answer is “yes;” sometimes it is “no;” and sometimes it is “not yet.” That is true! However, along with those “ answers,” God asks us a deeper question. He asks, “Do you trust Me with this...however it goes?” Learning to trust God is crucial...especially if you consider the fact that His closest friends did let Jesus down. Don't be quick to criticize them; be quick to identify with them. I am increasingly amazed at how human most of the so-called “heroes” of the Bible are. Peter, James and John became really good leaders and pastors and shepherds. But they never stopped being real! Let me ask a question, although I am pretty sure I know how you will answer it. Is there a perfect person in this room? Think about what that means. I’m not perfect. You are not perfect. Your wife, husband, parents, kids, best friend, teacher, boss, employees, students. A veces toma tiempo. Yo no soy perfecto. Tú no eres perfecto. Tu esposa, esposo, padres, niños, mejor amigo, maestro, jefe, empleados, estudiantes. No hay nadie perfecto entre nosotros! Why do we react so strangely and even cruelly when someone says or does things that prove what we all know? I am not saying we need to be complacent or lazy about our imperfections – our sins; we just need to be more realistic about them. And, we should not turn to any human being expecting to find what can only come from God... and it can come to any one of us because of what Jesus was willing to go through... especially after "...he breathed his last." (Lk 23:46, ESV) Dead! “…if Christ has not been raised (“from the dead”), your faith is useless!” (1 Cor 15:14) Let that statement sink in for a few moments: In order to have been raised from the dead, Jesus had to fully experience death! The Jewish and the Roman leaders went out of their way to prove Jesus was very dead! Yet the oldest of all lies that denies the resurrection of Jesus is connected to the idea that He never really died; that He was in some kind of a semi-coma… and He revived and walked away. That is ridiculous…and it is one of the few places where some of the most firm critics of Christ-ianity choose to ignore science! Jesus had been beaten and then flogged. That means an executioner (or maybe two) used what is called a “cat o’ nine tails” -- a handle with straps of leather that had rocks or metal balls and hooks at the ends to “ tenderize” and shred the flesh of the victim. Flogging alone killed many people…and Jesus had been severely beaten before the flogging even started! After the flogging, Jesus was given a cross (or at least a big part of it) to carry to the place of execution. He was so dehydrated, beaten, bloodied, traumatized and exhausted He fell -and that brought the huge post, weighing as much as 100 pounds, crashing down on top of Him. That would be like being thrown into the dashboard in a car crash! Then Jesus had spikes driven through the most sensitive nerve centers of the body a crown of huge thorns was driven onto his head. That would have combined to bring severe blood loss. Then came Crucifixion. It was so intensely horrific a word was created to describe it. It is where we get …and our word “excruciating!” Within hours, their “death experts” said, "Jesus is dead!” -- and to underline it, they said it twice! Then the “officially dead” body of Jesus was wrapped in as much as 100 pounds of burial cloth and spices. That alone would have been enough to suffocate a healthy person! After officially being declared dead, the body of Jesus was “cocooned” in a burial sack… and sealed in a stone-cold cave for over 48 hours! There was a time when one of the most brilliant people in history went out of his way to challenge who Jesus really was...and what He really did. Paul challenged it so passionately he saw to it that people were beaten or sent to prison if not killed for what they believed about Jesus. Then, to his amazement (as much as anyone’s), Paul, began to believe what they did about Jesus -- and went on to spend the rest of his life putting his own life on the line rather than staying silent about it. 14 Él estaba tan deshidratado, golpeado, ensangrentado, traumatizado y agotado El cayó y eso trajo el gran poste, que pesaba tanto como 100 libras, encima de él. 15 Paul said “… the most important of all…is …Christ died for our sins…” (1 Cor 15:3-4, NIRV) "… the most important of all…is… Christ died for our sins…” (1 Cor 15:3-4, NIRV) In another letter Paul explained why that is “ the most important of all”: “God…declares sinners to be right in his sight when they believe (it)!” (Rom 3:26, NLT)... when they believe Christ died for our sins…” (1 Cor 15:3-4, NIRV) Hold that in your thoughts for a few moments: Christ died for my sins! That should make us tremble...and it should make most of us tremble far more than it does. Today we are going to pause long enough to give an opportunity to consider it...to remember it! You are welcome (and encouraged) to make your way to the two symbols Jesus left as reminders of His death for our sins. Bread/body broken; liquid/blood poured. As you approach the bread and the cup ask Holy Spirit to teach you or to remind you God died... and what Jesus' death really means!
