ANTONIO MÉNDEZ ESPARZA

El director y guionista M. Esparza vivió una
temporada en México y en Estados Unidos.
Estudió cine en la UCLA de Los Ángeles y en
la Universidad de Columbia donde obtuvo un
título en producción de cine. Su anterior trabajo,
el cortometraje Una y otra vez (2008), recibió
numerosos premios a lo largo de 2009.
Director and screenwriter M. Esparza lived a
season in Mexico and another in the United
States. He studied cinema at UCLA in Los Angeles
and at Columbia University, where he got a
degree in film production. His previous work,
Once and Again (2008), received numerous
awards all throughout 2009.

Pedro regresa a su pueblo, una pequeña villa en las montañas de Guerrero, México, luego de trabajar
varios años en los Estados Unidos. El director y guionista Méndez Esparza lo conoció viviendo en Nueva
York y decidió acompañar su retorno a través de un emotivo relato semidocumental de indisimulado
contenido político y social en el que se respeta la trama básica de la historia aunque se ficcionalicen
algunas de sus vicisitudes. La llegada a la sierra natal para conseguir el sueño de formar su propia
banda de música, no será inofensiva: las cosas han cambiado demasiado tras sus dos estadías al norte
de la frontera; sus hijas han crecido y se muestran ajenas y distantes, su mujer sigue sonriendo como
si tal cosa, los vecinos se distraen en la esperanza de conseguir oportunidades laborales en una ciudad
en desarrollo a sólo una hora de camino, aunque Estados Unidos siga siendo –Pedro lo sabe– la condenada y principal tentación. Ante la inestabilidad de sus vidas, los serranos de Guerrero se tensan en
el amor a sus familias, logrando esta entrañable historia de emigración, en un mundo cada vez más
desdibujado y trashumante.
After working several years in the United States, Pedro returns to his hometown, a little village in the
mountains of Guerrero, Mexico. Director and screenwriter Méndez Esparza met him while living in New
York and decided to accompany his return through an emotional semi-documentary tale of undisguised
political and social content. The basics of the story are respected, but some of the vicissitudes are fictionalized. However, the arrival to the native mountains in order to pursue the dream of forming his own
music band, Copa Kings, will not be harmless: things have changed too much since his two stays north
of the border; his daughters are all grown and they appear foreign and distant, his wife keeps smiling
as if, his neighbors toy with the idea of getting job opportunities in a developing city that is only one
hour away, although the United States is still –Pedro knows this- the damned main attraction. Facing
the instability of their lives, the mountain people of Guerrero put tension into the love of their families,
accomplishing at the same time this untransferable, shareable story of emigration in an ever so blurred
and migrating world.
