The Ascension of Our Lord—Easter
“…why are you looking at the sky?” Acts of the Apostles 1:11
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” Matthew 28:19
Dear Friends;
Christ is risen!
Where did the Risen Christ go? The Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles want to tell us where now we should look
for the Risen Christ. He has risen and ascended. He lives now in those who believe and do what he has commanded. He
has passed into the Church and the Sacraments—especially Eucharist. And as Matthew narrates we are sent on mission.
Jesus chose those who would be his followers. Then he empowered them to be apostles, the ones sent as his partners in
ministry. Jesus needs partners to expand his work in the world. The living Christ chooses us and needs us to be his
partners. St Augustine said, “Without us, God will not act. Without God, we cannot act.”
And look at who Jesus chose—people who did not understand him, who worried about what his choice meant for them
personally, they ran away when it got difficult, or who like his women followers got ignored or overlooked for centuries.
He chose broken, imperfect, struggling and sinful people—so why not us? Despite our weakness we are God’s beloved
children. We are chosen.
St. Augustine speaks of the Body of Christ as both the body of believers and the Eucharistic food and drink. “You are the
body of Christ. In you and through you the work of the Incarnation (God taking on human existence) must go forward.
You are to be taken; you are to be blessed, broken and given; that you may be the means of grace and the vehicles of the
Eternal Love. Therefore, behold what you are. Become what you receive.”
As Jesus gave himself for the life of the world, he now gives us for the sake of the world in need. The Risen Christ gives
us so that we may be his body in the world. Not as a body in the sense of a group or organization of people, or like a team,
or corporation or political body. Christ gives us to be his own literal, physical flesh, blood and bones body. St. Teresa of
Jesus (Avila) the sixteenth century Spanish mystic put it this way:
Cristo no tiene otro cuerpo que el tuyo;
no tiene manos ni pies en la tierra, excepto los tuyos.
Christ has no other body but yours;
no hands nor feet on the earth but yours.
Tuyos son los ojos a través de los cuales
El mira a este mundo con compasión.
Yours are the eyes through which
He looks on the world with compassion.
Tuyas son las manos con las que El bendice
A todo el mundo.
Yours are the hands through which He blesses
the whole world
Behold what you are. Become what you receive—the Body of Christ. Amen.
Today, we say farewell to Fr. Jim Schexnayder. For many years he has come out to help us on the first weekend of the
month. We are grateful to the face of Christ he has been for us. I will particularly miss his excellent homilies. (He has said
he can be talked into coming back on occasion.) This week he also celebrated his Fiftieth—Golden Jubilee as a priest. We
rejoice in his many years of service to God’s people in the Diocese of Oakland. Congratulations Jim!

Queridos amigos;
Cristo ha resucitado!
¿A dónde se fue el Cristo Resucitado? El Evangelio de Lucas y los hechos de los apóstoles quieren decirnos donde ahora
debemos buscar el Cristo Resucitado. Ha resucitado y ascendido. Ahora vive en aquellos que creen y hacen lo que él ha
ordenado. Ahora habita en la iglesia y en los sacramentos, especialmente la Eucaristía. Y como Mateo narra que hemos
sido enviado en misión.
Jesús eligió a quienes serían sus seguidores. y les otorgó el poder de ser apóstoles, los enviados como socios en el
Ministerio. Jesús necesita socios para expandir su obra en el mundo. El Cristo vivo nos elige y necesita que seamos sus
socios. San Agustín dijo, "sin nosotros, Dios no actuará. Sin Dios, no podemos actuar."
Y mirena quien eligió Jesús— gente que no lo comprendía, que preocupados por lo que su elección significaba para ellos
personalmente, huyeron cuando se les puso difícil, o como sus seguidoras femeninas que fueron ignoradas o pasadas por
alto por siglos. Escogió gente rota, imperfecta, con dificultades y pecadores — Entonces ¿por qué no nosotros? A pesar de
nuestra debilidad somos los hijos amados de Dios. Los elegidos.
San Agustín habla del cuerpo de Cristo como tanto el cuerpo de creyentes y la comida y bebida Eucarística. "Ustedes son
el cuerpo de Cristo. En ustedes y por medio de ustedes la obra de la encarnación (Dios en la existencia humana). Debe ir
hacia adelante; Han de ser bendecidos, rotos y obsequiados; que puedan ser los medios de gracia y los vehículos del
amor eterno. Por lo tanto, he aquí lo que eres. Convertido en lo que has recibido".
Como Jesús dio su vida para la vida del mundo, ahora el nos da por el mundo en necesidad. El Cristo Resucitado se nos
da para que seamos su cuerpo en el mundo. No como un cuerpo en el sentido de un grupo u organización de personas, o
como un equipo, o corporación o cuerpo político. Cristo se nos da para ser su propio cuerpo literalmente físico, en carne,
sangre y huesos. Santa Teresa de Jesús de Ávila la mística española del siglo XVI lo describe así:
Cristo no tiene otro cuerpo que el tuyo;
no tiene manos ni pies en la tierra, excepto los tuyos.
Tuyos son los ojos a través de los cuales
El mira a este mundo con compasión.
Tuyas son las manos con las que El bendice
A todo el mundo.
He aquí lo que eres. Conviértete en lo que recibes— el Cuerpo de Cristo. Amén.
Hoy en día, nos despedimos con el padre Jim Schexnayder. Durante muchos años ha venido a ayudarnos en la primera
semana del mes. Estamos agradecidos por el Rostro de Cristo que el ha sido para nosotros. Particularmente voy a extrañar
sus excelentes homilías. (Él ha dicho que le podemos convencer para volver en alguna ocasión). Esta semana también
celebró su cincuentenario, bodas de oro como Sacerdote. Nos regocijamos en sus muchos años de servicio al pueblo de
Dios en la diócesis de Oakland. Jim Felicitaciones!
