When Spanish speakers ask for the time, they ask “¿_______________________?”
To tell the time in Spanish, you use the verb SER. However, you will only use one of two
forms of the verb: ____________ or _____________________.
There are two formulas to use when telling time. If the hour is a singular one (meaning
1:00-1:30 only) then you use _________ + _________ + _________ followed by the
number of minutes. For example, “Es la una y diez” means that it is the first hour (1:00)
and 10 minutes; more specifically it is 1:10. Time is always feminine because it is LA
HORA.

If the hour is a plural one (meaning anything after 1:30) then you use _______ +
_______+ dos, tres, etc. followed by the number of minutes. For example, “Son las dos y
diez” means that it is the second hour (2:00) plus 10 minutes; more specifically it is 2:10.
Time is always feminine here because it is LA HORA. In this case, LAS is plural because
you have more than one hour.

Typically in Spanish you add minutes to the hour, (ex: Son las tres y veinte) but you stop
adding at the 30th minute. To say it is 3:30 you would say: Son las tres y treinta, or
media(half).

However, you would not say it is 3:31, 3:32, etc. because these numbers are higher than
30. Instead, you go to the next hour and subtract minutes, such as 3:31 = It is four minus

*For 15 past an hour or 15 to an hour (quarter past, quarter to) the word ___________ is
